A while ago I did a list about getting my Stepchildren into gaming, the link to that list is here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/41568.

Some time has passed since I did that list and their gaming interest has grown. This coupled with my return to working day shift hours has meant a lot of gaming. This list covers the new stuff they have learned and how well or badly it went.

We went through a stint of card games for a bit. The kids caught on to this one fairly decent. They sometimes go haywire and start taking their partners tricks and a few other little things but they are improving.

I can see why this game has a cult like following.

I really like this one but it doesn't hit the table very much. Our oldest gets it, but our youngest is a little lost with this one.
I think with more plays they will get better but the different scoring possibilities is a little much for our youngest to grasp.

This is an interesting little game. It is best described as Gang of Four with a Parcheesi like board game attached to it instead of using a score pad. The kids like this one. The components are kinda not the best. I ended up sleeving the cards and we upgraded the glass bead player pieces with Buddhas, Confucius, Dragons, and Monkeys. Everyone liked it more after pimping the components a little.

This was a pleasant little card game. The kids really enjoy this one. Our oldest has gotten her timing down as to when to try and score her buildings, but our youngest doesn't always select the most opportune times to do it.

They really like this one. We have the bullet edition which is something that they have been enamored with since it's purchase. Sometimes the kids whine a little when they get eliminated real early in the game, which to rectify this I have been injecting more Ameritrash in their gaming diet so it doesn't bother them so much. The odd thing is that they never complained when their pieces got eaten in Survive!; I am assuming that they relate their player elimination more to a something (IE eaten by a shark) as opposed to a someone (IE me or their Mom killing them with a Bang card). So it seems more ok to be eliminated by a something than a someone.

We got this since we were kind of disappointed with Zooloretto (especially after finding out we liked Coloretto better). This game has seen more play than Zooloretto since it's purchase. We all like it but really like Coloretto much better.

I figured I couldn't go wrong from the creators of Survive! Got dinosaurs... check, got a lava spewing volcano.......check, got a swamp monster....check, got a giant prehistoric bird that can pick up player pieces....check, a fun Indiana Jones run to the temple and get gold coins game play....check.

They really enjoyed this one. It sits proudly with my giant stack of Survive! And Escape From Atlantis games. It doesn't get played as much as Survive! But it does get brought out from time to time. The kids always enjoy it and it doesn't get brought out enough to ware out it's welcome.

The kids did fairly decent at this one. Our oldest thought I was joking about the player with the most corruption tokens being fed to the crocs; she unfortunately found out I wasn't joking. Our youngest seems to do well with games like these. He actually likes the collect resource and build stuff kind of games. His attention actually stays focused the whole time and he did well staying away from getting too corrupt during the game.

I liked this one, but the wife and kids were lukewarm to it. All of us would rather play Goldbrau, which has seen an increase in play with the kids now liking it a lot. Our oldest fell behind because she didn't want to share any interest in the speakeasy's. Our youngest almost went bankrupt because he just kept buying trucks since they looked neat.

They really liked this one. Both of them getting good at developing strategies for this game. Their play has greatly improved on this one. They are starting to understand that the cards are a big key to winning the game and they need those along with the huts to do well.

They did fairly decent with this one but our youngest gets a little side tracked. He gets really infatuated with collecting lots of money and building on his little player board but often ignores placing his cubes in any shops. Our oldest is improving a lot with this one.

The kids are catching on fairly well with this one. It took them a bit to get into their heads that no one owns any of the castles. Once they got that concept their play improved and they are getting better about getting their pawns in as many different castles as possible. They understood the action point system very well.

This is another one that they picked up perty fast. Our oldest is very aggressive when it comes to collecting sets of the artifacts. Our youngest is improving but tends to get his guys mobilized a little too late. Their good grasp of the whole action point system continued.

I am a bad parent. Me and my wife have been playing this since we first got together but only taught the kids this one recently (in my defense a lot of my tiles got lost in our last move and only recently have upgraded to the most recent edition since we were missing so many tiles we were not able to play it). Once again our youngest does great with the collect the resources and build stuff kind of game. He regularly beats his older sister and sometimes his mother. The kids have quickly graduated to the random tile placement setup and make good decisions on their settlement placement. They also don't ignore the development cards. They are getting really good at this one.

The kids have a lot of fun with this one. Our oldest is getting better but our youngest sometimes has a real hard time visualizing what will fit into what; though he has shown improvement. Our youngest is still better at resource management than he is at games with a spacial element.

The roll and move strikes back. Me and my wife really like this game and finally taught the kids how to play it at their request. By turn two I thought we were playing with a monkey and the guy from Memento. Our oldest kept spacing out and didn't understand anything that was going on (even though besides having the rules explained to her and watching several games she was still lost). Our youngest was bouncing around like a monkey and somewhat incoherent. Seriously; are these the same kids that played Goldbrau and Settlers with us?

The kids absolutely love this game. They are cutthroat and exploit the Sheriff ability to it's fullest. We ended up pimping out the game with fools gold, replica Confederate money, and cowboy boot dice cups. We all really get a kick out of it and always have fun. This game has made it's way to almost every game night since it's purchase and never fails to please.

A special thanks to cdefrisco & tasajara for taking a picture of the new pimped out Dice Town and posting it after the last game night.

So in closing their game play has improved and they more consistently play more complex games. They are not ready for Steam, and it may take a while but they are able to play more of the fun stuff now. It seems Settlers has become their new favorite, they ask to play again after just finishing regardless of how well they did (woot). They snubbed their cousins when asked to play life and Sorry, which is kinda funny. They have gotten into the deeper play of Eurogames, and appreciate them a lot. They asked what Monopoly was like and I told them it was a lot like being grounded, it takes too long and there is nothing really to do.

I am very pleased with how well they are doing and it is a jow to watch them become more strategic and cutthroat in their game play. We have a lot of fun on game nights, which has grown from a shaky start to a fulfilling experience. Patience has paid off.

The kids had their first go of this tonight and they had a lot of fun. This isn't my wife's favorite game but she is still willing to play it from time to time. Our oldest liked this better than regular Catan; which she admits is due to all the neat space ships and other doodads. Our youngest didn't do too bad. He still seems to grasp the whole resource thing and even keeps in good spirits while he is behind in points. He does keep his focus better on these types of games.

So far we have played at least one Settlers game each night this week; not a bad week of gaming if you ask me.
