The summer heat must be getting to us. This month we were up for some crimes. We had a great night of being ugly to each other, but in a good way.

Here's the current leaderboard: http://docs.google.com/View?id=dffx4wg5_2fk3dn4fd

We started off with a game with the kids. Maly, Will, Brian, Tyler and I all vying to be come gold moguls. I can't speak for anyone else, but I couldn't really get anything going. Probably it's my auction game thing that I don't bid enough. Anyway Will was building his empire by buying whatever he wanted. Brian benefited from this by sitting to Will's right. In the end Brian edged Will out. Boomtown continues to be a quick fun game that allows you to lay our plan, but also puts you at the mercy of some chance.

The kids went to bed, Dan and David joined us, and it was time to get serious. Will was kind enough to gather up a bunch of his toy guns for us. This is a great game that always demands a second play. I won the first go thanks to a big pot that I dragged as the last man standing in a brutal round. Tyler won the next game. After spending a half and hour shooting each other in the face, we were ready to go big time.

This was only my second game of Bootleggers, and we messed it up pretty bad, but we all still enjoyed it a lot. Once you get the phases of the game down, hire your muscle, make you strategic decisions, send in the boys, fire up the still, and run your whiskey, it's a pretty easy game to play. But there's so many choices and the choices can affect everyone, sometimes brutally, that the game, even when it's long, stays fun. How did we mess it up? I forgot the game could also end when someone had accumulated $100,000. Well, David (and maybe me) did this pretty early in the game. It wasn't until the bank began to run out of money that we noticed this little bit of the rules. By this time we only had a couple rounds to go, so we finished it out. I was the strong front runner at this point, and the other gangs had conspired to bring me down. In some games this wouldn't be fun. But in Bootleggers, this spirit seemed to match the theme pretty well. Ultimately they did bring me down, I lost my a few measly thousand to David. (Who in my world then had all of his co conspirators shot.) Great game, made game of the month, hope to play it again in August.

Dan and Tyler called it a night, and Brian, David and I opted for one more game, Mall of Horror. Last time I played this game, it frankly wasn't that fun, seemed a bit procedural. Now we vote, now we move, now we put the zombies out. But I think that was because we played it early, and the crowd wasn't warmed up yet. After an entire evening of stabbing each other in the back (and the front), we were ready to feed each other to the zombies. The little girls were eaten first of course. And then we were picked off one by one. When help arrived, David had the most points. This gave him two wins, the trophy for the night (if Brian wasn't still keeping it at his house under lock and key), and a big jump up on the leaderboard.
