I have been gaming for quite a while now and have recently gotten into wargaming. And very quickly I found out that Eurogamers have it easy.

I am not intending to rip on Eurogamers with this list. Really it is the opposite. I am actully impressed by the time and dedication of Wargamers for the effort and time they put into the hobby.

I am starting to get sucked in, but I do not think I am ready for the time commitment nor do I think I have the patience.

Please feel free to add your thoughts on how Wargamers have it tough compared to Eurogamers.

I recently bought The Siege of Jerusalem off EBay. I am interested in the subject matter and I love the fact there are siege engines in the game. Anyway, the listing said "Most pieces are present and maybe all of them but I'm not 100% sure.". (Yeah right!) But I couldn't pass up the low price.

After inventorying everything, I found 32 of the 696 counters missing. So I had to print, cut, and assemble replacements.

Then I have to tackle the rules. Are you kidding me? I can't wrap my head around these rules. I think they are actually written in Latin.
I am a pretty technical guy. I happened to have set up a Cisco ASA router with a VPN tunnel with no prior experience and Cisco has certification classes for that. Is there an AH certification somewhere?

I picked up Men of Iron at GMT's awesome summer sale and I was happy to crack it openTuesday and proceeded to cut out 700 counters. It took 3 hours and now my fingers are sore. Other than Conflict of Heroes, which punched like a dream, wargames generally have horribly under-cut counter sheets, especially when compared to most Euro's.

I used an eXacto knife, is there an easier way? Can someone post a tutorial or link a video please?

Finally, a wargame without counters. Thank god. Then I see the sticker
sheets and the rudely bare blocks and there are 345 of them.

Don't even get me started on play time. I have seen Eurogamers complain about 3 hour playtimes. Why don't you try 30+ hours sometime.

Try knocking out a full game of The Siege of Jerusalem in a weekend. I dare you. The fracking introductory scenario is 6 hours.

Hah! "Yes, I've been planning, with great deliberation and insidious amounts of subterfuge, to eliminate you from this game. That's right, you need to sit down whilst we finish the last 4 hours of this. There's beer in the fridge at least..."

How often does a Eurogamer have to explain THAT? It's not always easy, but planned execution is a staple of wargames. Of course, two player wargames don't pose a problem, but there are plenty of others that do (Pax Romana, Struggle of Empires, Sword of Rome, etc...).

Good Gaming~! Mick

Finding players for Wargames can be a bitch. Walk into any game night and pull out Galaxy Trucker or Dominion and you will have all sorts of people lining up to play. Crack out a copy of Eastfont and you will get blank stares.
