So earlier in the week Heather said [out of the blue], "We've been busy these last few weekends. What do you think of having a 'game-night' this weekend?"

surprise

Let's just say there's a reason I'm going to marry this girl! laugh

So the big day comes, and her friend calls saying, "Me and my beau are in the area. Would you two want to meet up tonight for dinner and drinks?"

[Around here I expect 'game-night' to be pushed back yet another night]

To my surprise, Heather replies "Tonight I promised Jeremy a 'game-night'. Would you and Ian be up for meeting for dinner, than playing one of Jeremy's games with us?"
surprise

"Sure, let's do it!"

WOW!

So now I've got to pick the perfect game for the evening. The crowd: Heather, Beckah, and Ian.

Heather's been subjected to almost all my games, and she's a big fan of all that don't require "direct-conflict". Beckah's played Stone Age with us a few weeks ago, and she really enjoyed it. From dinner, I gathered that Ian hadn't played a board game since Monopoly. He sounded really excited to try out what the hobby had to offer.

Given the crowd, what game would you choose?

After some discussions, I offer up Le Havre. It's a deep game, yet is simple enough to grasp within the first few turns, and you can have fun without having a long-term strategy.

After the second turn, everyone had gotten the game-flow. By the fourth turn, everyone had figured out how their turns really interact with each other.

Around the 5th turn, Beckah said, "I think the next time we play this, I'll have a better idea with what to do earlier in the game."

VICTORY! In my mind, that's as successful as a game night as can be. Everyone had a blast, and they want to come back for more! Apparently I chose the game well!

What would you have chosen?

I see you have Guillotine. This is a fun game to start off with. The way in which people play can give you insight into the next game to pull out.

Are they aggressive? Pull out something with a little more conflict.

Are they conservative? Maybe a cooperative game would be better next.
