With a new baby and lots going on, rather than have an all-out game day, we started back in the swing of things on a Friday night. The problem was though that I didn’t give much notice, it was a Friday night, and so we had the smallest group in a long time. The attendees were: David D, Dave K, Krista, and myself.

Gamer of the Month: David Dean 1.25 rating

I really enjoy Mac Gerdts games and knowing this Dave K was able to bring PoMP over for the first game of the evening. After an excellent rules explanation by Dave, which I think would be tough with this game having all the interlocking parts, we got started. My goal at the beginning of the game was to get a bunch of shirts, since that is what is needed to get priests and virgins, and thus win the game. It didn’t work out so well. I did end up getting a lot of shirts, but I only finished with 3 panther priests. David got all 4 eagle priests and several of the virgins. Dave scored huge on the corn area, maybe 25 – 30 points, but it wasn’t enough to catch David. The game ended with all the priests/virgins being rescued. I liked this game quite a bit and might even rate it as the most brain-burning of the Gerdts games, since there seem to be many more choices each turn than in his other games. I’m not saying that Imperial, Hamburgum, or Antike are light, I’m just saying this one tonight really made me think.

Dave had to leave, so David and I played one of his favorites and one that he has done well with in the past. However, tonight was my night, with a couple huge church scores. This game did see a lot more buildings come out than I’m accustomed to seeing come out.

With Kaylee finally in bed, Krista was able to join David and I for some Carcassonne. The first game we just played vanilla + the River and David ended up taking the victory by nickel and diming his way through and scoring 27 points off cloisters. The second game, with the river removed and I&C added, was a much meaner game. I made it impossible for all of us to finish a potentially large city, costing me a meeple and some points, but hurting both David and Krista by making their big meeples useless. At the end of the game the board was filled with quite a few holes. Carc is still best with I&C only, in my opinion.
