When will I learn my lesson to not show up late? I was running slow Sun morning and was the last one to arrive (about 10 min late). There were 2 games set up and 1 of them was full. I definitely wasn't in the right mind set/mood for the game with an open seat, but I didn't feel like playing solitaire in the corner either. *sigh* My own fault showing up late. Maybe if I rig the alarm clock to the shower control and sleep in the bath tub ...

What did we play this week?

Yes, I got 'stuck' playing automobile. I know, 'boo hoo' you say, but I haven't had a good experience yet with Martin Wallace games. Please don't stone me for the blasphemy.

Turn 1, I took the sell 2 cars guy. I had no clue what was a good move or what I was doing so I was mimicking the example from the rules. The factories got built far enough for me to reach the first luxury space so I went there and managed to build and sell 4 cars. I think Ross was the only player to go economy while everyone else went with the mid-range cars.

Dave K looked like he was collecting R&D cubes as well as loss cubes. By mid game, he was practically forced to take the character that discards 1/2 loss cubes since he had 12+ (before discarding).

Turn 2, I built the next factory to get in on mid-range cars (spending white cubes faster than I could collect them). I was hoping it would stay the highest tech for that class, but I was gravely mistaken. Dave D moved in on my luxury turf grabbing the next 2 factory spaces. I really screwed up something 2nd turn since I didn't build that many cars, but still sold less. I wound up with unused distributors too.

I had to take out both my loan options on the 3rd turn just for cash flow. I grabbed an economy factory, built all 3 types of cars (which I could barely afford), then closed my luxury plant. Dave D got a lucky tile draw (5) for his luxury cars. Adding in Howard's ability and some distributors, he had an amazing turn 3 ($2000-$2100).

Turn 4, I upgraded my econ factory to max capacity + parts plant and built the max number of cars I could there (with no idea if I could come close to selling that many). I also built as many mid-range as I could afford. I added some distributors as well. Somehow, I sold every car for a pretty decent final turn. It didn't make up for turn 2, but at least I made a profit which was my only goal for my first game.

Beth never took out a loan, while the rest of us had 2.

Quote of the day happened while comparing Martin Wallace titles, and Ross had this to say about Brass:

"Actual 18th century textile production was easier than playing a game about it."

With the way the scores were tallied, it looks like Shea was mostly a builder, getting 28 pts from buildings and two 5 pts bonus buildings. Angie was the big shipper, getting 20 vp chits, but no large buildings. Mike and Chris were also primarily shipping, both getting 15 vp chits. Chirs had 9 bonus points (possibly from 2 buildings, but it's written down as 1), while Mike only got 6 bonus points.

I also over heard something about a coffee boat. It sounded like the largest boat got tied up with 1 or 2 coffee, and that was all that got shipped the entire game and was credited for Shea's win for some reason.

I guess Mike's score looks bigger if you write it out... They almost put away the game, but realized they had just enough time for a 2nd and Mike wanted to redeem himself. Looks like he did a pretty good job of that.

Game 1 2 Game 3
Ross 43 55 Ross 28
Todd 40 64 Todd 44
Dave K 26

Everyone disappeared after the automobile game, leaving me and Ross stranded with Race (the horror!). I was finally able to end Ross's winning streak in the 2nd game. I was able to play terraforming guild as my 3rd card, adding terraforming robots as my 5th. Unfortunately, my windfalls disappeared shortly after that (along with worlds in general) so I couldn't settle rush like I planned. I did manage to get Seti down before ending the game. Ross was on a pretty big produce/consume engine getting 8-10 points a turn. He didn't have a 6 dev though which made the difference.

Game 3, I started with Earth's Lost Colony. I had a colony ship and Galactic Studio's in my hand. I kept trying to be clever the first few turns hoping one of the others would settle for me. I deved the colony ship turn 1. Called produce turn 2, and maybe again turn 3 or 4, trying to gain tempo and a card leeching off of a non-existant settle call. Eventually, I called settle myself and started in on a produce consume cycle with just the 2 cards which quickly became 3 after playing another production world with a consume 1 good for 1 pt and 1 card power. I plopped down some more production worlds for the 5pt goal. Dave had a lock on the most developments goal. Ross constantly had 10 cards in hand it seemed.
