OK, I (may) have some poker players coming next week. What's a good game to convert them to some more euro-type games? Please add anything (although preferably something I own). My games: <A TARGET=BLANK HREF=http://www.boardgamegeek.com/viewcollection.php3?username=snoozefest&own=1&startletter=ALL>http://www.boardgamegeek.com/viewcollection.php3?u...tter=AL...;/A>

thanks!

I think that Taj Mahal has a really great poker-type quality to it. Press your luck elements, potential bluffing, knowing when to withdraw (or to even play in a given visit). It's all there.

It seems as though any given bidding game would appeal to poker players. This one in particular stands out in that you're trying to balance your points and not bidding too high (lest you have the least amount of money at the end of the game). Plus, it's quick.

More rummy than poker, but you need a good poker face---because your goal routes are hidden and you don't want to get blocked off! And there's also the element of "do I wait? and wait? and risk someone cutting me off? Or do I grab that route now and show my plans to everybody?..."

Of course, it's possible that my group is just slightly more cutthroat with TtR than average.

Simple game that has some poker-type elements to it, including secret bets, knowing when to bet (and when not to) and figuring out the strength of your hand on the fly. This would be an excellent choice.

Though an older title, Adel could be a good introduction game to your poker-playing friends. Bluffing, double (and triple!) guessing your opponents...this might have them intrigued and wanting more.

I know this may seem like an odd choice, but I can see poker players playing Kingdoms. Each player is trying to help themselves, hurt other players, or both. Plus, each player has a tile that no one else knows what it is. Risk vs. reward...this could work.

Schotten-Totten is 2-player, and uses Poker-style hands in battles. You can play it using your Rage deck (which you list as a game you own); look under Rage for my geeklist 'Games you can play with a Rage deck', to find Schotten-Totten notes.

Hey, at least they'll be familiar with getting flushes, straights, etc., even if it's only 3 cards instead of 5+!

Only drawback is the 2-player part, for what you are intending.

For Sale has an excellent poker-like feel (at least to me). It's got terrific brinkmanship, and a deliciously dangerous feel to the bidding. There's seeing and raising bids, folding, and a bit of bluff and doublethink. The whole thing only takes 10 or 15 minutes, and you can play with just a deck of cards and some poker chips.

(To play with a deck of cards: take the face cards out, along with A and 2 of hearts. Include two Jokers. Black cards are the "buildings," A to 10 of Clubs are 1-10, A to 10 of Spaces are 11-20. Red cards are "cheques," Jokers worth zero, 3-10 of Hearts are 3-10, A to 10 of Diamonds are 11-20. Play as per normal rules.)

Such an obvious choise. Uber-cool and manish theme. Works all the better with a round poker table, a glass of whisky and a fat cigar. The game is also almost a 100% about bluffing. (Players wait to reveal themselves until the very last moment, then all hell breaks loose.)

The central element to this game is essentially bluff poker. That added to the eye appeal of the Avalon Hill version may get them hooked. And beginning players will not miss having all 628 aliens and flares (yes, I know I'm exaggerating). Have fun!

Very similar to playing poker with dollar bill serial numbers. You get a liscence plate of 6 numbers that acts as your "hand" and you make the best hand that you can from the numbers.

I've always thought of LotF as somewhat poker-like, only with changing hands. Of course, LotF lacks any of the complexity of poker, but it covers some of the same thinking.

I would recommend Aladdin's Dragons for this crowd. I've noticed that most of the games listed so far are card games, which would provide a good transition, but this one is not, and could provide a mechanism to show them that "not all good games are card games." Plus, the bluffing mechanic here is very strong, and could bring out the cutthroat in each of them. Plus, the first rounds of bidding provide the lucre to pay for future rounds could be quite appealing to the poker crowd. They might even enjoy the basic (no magic) game, though the depth added by the magic is very good indeed.
