This was my *fnord* Gencon and once again I loaded up on games to run.

This was my first year back as an Independent Judge. The last 3 years, I was a booth monkey for FFG. After last year, I decided to go back to being Independent as this is my vacation and I really wanted more control over my schedule.

All pics are from the games that I ran.

First up on my list of games to run was Song of Blades and Heroes. This is a fun skirmish game that is really, really fast. It is a generic system, so you can use any sort of miniature that you own. I used D&D minis and I don't like painting all that much.

As you can see in the image, I have multiple games going at once. Each game session lasted 2 hours and each player was able to get in 2 to 3 games during that time in addition to learning the rules.

I had a total of three different scenarios:
1) A band of heroes had to destroy the Alter of Evil.
2) An evil horde was sent to destroy a peaceful village.
3) A group of bandits attracts the attention of the local heroes, who attempt to capture them.

I ran 6 total session of SoBH. Three on Thursday and three on Sat.

On Friday, I turned my attention to the historical side of gaming. Song of Drum and Shakos is based on the game Song of Blade and Heroes. It is a fast to learn and play game.

In the scenario, Russian forces are out looting farms for fresh food when a French patrol stumbles upon them. The Russians sole goal is to escape, which isn't easy to do when being shot at!

I did a total of 3, 2 hour sessions of this game. As with Song of Blades and Heroes, most players were able to get in 2 to 3 games in the time slot.

Squadron Strike is generic rule set for fighting 3D space battles. As I had a bunch of micro machines from the '90s, I built some positionable flight stands and worked up some stats.

I designed the fighters to have very, very small arcs of fire. 95% of the game was spent trying to get a shot lined up. This resulted in a 3D furball as the out-numbered X-Wings tried to escape a horde of TIE fighters.

The event that I had scheduled only had 1 player signed up, so him and I played. However, later that night I ran a pick up game that had a full compliment of players. They had just finished a SS demo and were a blast to watch. They played about 30 turns and had no fear of going into the vertical.

This was the 10th year that I did my massive Twilight Imperium. This year, the 12 player game took only 5.5 hours to complete!
