How I spent the 2009 WBC, lots of games = little sleep!

I'll add more as I'm able to recall all the games I played.

They may or may not appear in played order.

Sunday Evening. I had just checked in, walked into open gaming with my program, and t-shirt still in arm. Saw my friends Brandon & Brittany Bernard and family playing. They let me sit in and had a blast.

Made it through training missions and crushed the first "Live" mission. After 4 games we called it quits.

Played in the Monday Tournament. Got a first round win as the Americans, went on to win the next two games, made it to the round of 8, and got destroyed. I had only played once before the tournament, but enjoy the game. Will play some more before Prezcon.

Finally Tuesday arrives, so as usual I enter the Circus to defend my two consecutive Tournament Wins. I win the 1st heat race so I'm in the final Sunday. 5 days of non-pressure gaming now that I've qualified.

Lets see what else we can enjoy.

The greatest game of pure skill at WBC. I always have a blast playing this tournament. It's a great start to the week. I easily defeat my first two opponents, 2-0, 2-0. Who do I draw in the third round? The two time Elchfest Champion David Meyaard. Yikes? you say, oh no. Using mental warfare, I annihilate his Elk from the river sweeping him 2-0, and ending his Elchfest dynasty.

I eventually play Brandon Bernard in the final, I leave the trash talk on the river bank, and he proves to be too much for me. I got stuck in the middle of both games for too long, and he shows me what a true champion is, knocking me off in two games.

Over all I was 8-2, both losses at the hands of the 2009 WBC Champion.

As GM, I decided I should show up for this one.

I was able to run 5 tables of 6-7 players in the first heat. Then 4 tables of the same count in the second heat. The heats were two laps only, no car construction.

The winners advance and to round out the top ten was a player that finished second in both heats.

I don't have the list of all finalists in front of me, but there were some usual suspects in the finals, including a prior champion Jason Levine, Harrison Anderson, myself and some others (apologies to those not mentioned).

Long story short, if you're making a move for the lead and have to roll an engine check, it's too bad if you only have one box left.

I cracked my engine block making a move into the last chicane of Suzuka, plummeting from maybe first/second, to 7th, outside the laurels. I got to walk back to the pits.

I don't like to get into a final only to pull up last, so I've included a prize for that situation.

The first player out, in 10th, was John Emery, awarded the now traditional LEGO F1 Ferrari set. He has an entire year to practice building his car for the 3 laps in '10.

Next year I'll have a special track, maybe supersized again if possible. Many people were disappointed that the Giant track didn't come this year.

Paydirt, the game of inches, decided by dice.

I was able to make the AFC draft, I was hoping to grab a decent all around team for a good point spread.

I ended up with the Texans, I felt they had good running, and the league's top receiver form last year in Andre Johnson, what could go wrong.

Let me sum it up for you, DEFENSE!

I drew the Chargers in the first round, my only round. The system that the GM, Harry Flawd, has is based on power points to create a point spread. I had the Texans at 225, my opponent was the Chargers at 238. a 13 point spread in my favor, not too bad, I'll use Slaton to gain some ground yards, and Andre Johnson to get me a few long gains to put them away.

My Texans must have been the late season Texans with QB Schaub sidelined. Sage threw two picks, Slaton fumbled in the redzone, and the Chargers evaporated the spread by half time. The Bolts punched holes through my Defense like the were playing Price is Right - Punch-a-bunch.

In the second half I managed to limit the mistakes and reign in the Chargers, in the end it was a last second Kaeding FG that put the Chargers one point over to cover the spread and win the game.

I was unable to make the NFC round the next day, but I enjoy Paydirt Win or Lose.

Dominion.

Yes I played, apparently so did everyone else at the convention. Almost anyway. The event drew the largest number of unique participants in WBC event history. 230 I believe.

The first Heat I came in second on a seat order tie-breaker, we both finished with 33, but I was seat 1.

Missed the 2nd heat, and played the 3rd heat.

In heat three, it was myself, some guy (forget name here), My friend Brandon (yes the same one, we seem to play a lot of games together, and another friend of ours Craig. For random table assignment, I got lucky to be seated with two guys I enjoy playing with, the 4th turned out to be a good guy as well.

Heat three had Labs and Spies. I figured that Labs was going to be the preferred method so instead of competing, I Spied the Bunsen Burners off the Labs. Using the Spies to gain cards for myself and burn off their good cards.

I ended up winning with 37 or 38. Other guy was 2nd, Brandon was a close 3rd. Had Brandon been able to buy the last Province he would have had the Victory. As for Craig, well let's just say he got to play and we had fun.

A win and a second was not enough to advance, I should have played round 2 and maybe I would have been a Ruler of all the lands.

I'll probably play again next year.

8. Board Game: Mystery of the Abbey [Average Rating:6.55 Overall Rank:1082]

I had some time to play Mystery of the Abbey on Wednesday.

Having made it to the finals in '08 I felt compelled to play again, at least in the 1st round. The GM for this event Ellen Hoam is great. She provides everyone with name tags so you can be just your plain self, or a cool character. In '08 Brandon, yes same guy, and I decided to be the Hardy Boys, I'm Joe he's Frank. Only Joe advanced in '08.

Cut to the chase. I had it narrowed down to two guys. Went to make the accusation, to find out that my fellow monks had been holding out on me. The first monk I named was revealed then I knew I had to race back again to make the second and now certainly accurate accusation.

I made it back in time to proclaim that is was....

Sean Connery & Christian Slater.

Nope that's not right, it was Novice Andre.

I got him, victory, the Swiss Guard can resume normal duty.

Wait, I'm second, but how? Oh, someone went and made 3 revelations, so scored more points somehow. This is the part of the game I'm not that thrilled about, but no big deal it's Mystery of the Abbey. I ended up being able to advance to the Semi Finals, as it's a field of 16.

I had to decline though, as I am the GM of Formula De, and we know how that worked out....if not read above.

By stepping down it did allow someone else to advance, any guesses?
......
That's right Frank Hardy, my friend Brandon, is on the case. He made it to the Final, didn't win, but the Hardy Boys were represented.
