Not sure where attendance was, but it was a little lower than usual - probably due to Gencon. I'd estimate around 30-40 people.

"Come in and join the fun on the second Friday of each month! Come join the rest of the Boardgamers of Great Akron (BOGA) for a fine evening in boardgames! Bring your favorite games to play and we also have a large selection of demo games for you to try!

Inspired by CABS in Columbus, Underhill's Games in Cuyahoga Falls has graciously agreed to host for us on the 2nd Friday of every month from 6pm - 2am (or later if still going strong at that time).

The store is big with plenty of open gaming space and has snacks and drinks available. Plus there's a Donatos right across the street and McDonalds next door if snacking just won't cut it. The store also has a large selection of demo copies of games that we can play. There's no entry fee. So just mark your calendar and let's all meet and play together!

What to bring:
Nothing is required, but you may want to bring your favorite games and a little cash for some food and drinks.

Visit Underhillsgames.com for directions. Tell all your friends! See you there."

Please add games you played and comment as you wish! Thank you.

I arrived around 6:30 and got into a couple of games of Hex Hex by Brenden and some others. This was a fun game I can see trying to find at some point.

Next was a game of Power Grid. Brenden taught it to 4 others who had never played and the game went really well. I barely won it at the end. Yay me Only the 2nd game I've ever won at BOGA.

In good BOGA tradition, Officer Mike and I started the evening off with a game of Combat Commander: Europe. Mike picked Scenario #44 from the Stalingrad Battle pack.

This was the biggest scenario I had ever played. It basically pitches the Soviets vs. the Germans in the Barrikady factory which occupies almost two thirds of the entire map. An extremely high unit count, high number of orders (6 for the Germans, 4 for the Soviets) and the long time count (turn 2 - 12) make this scenario a true monster.

It was a close game, with the fortunes of war turning back and forth between both sides. Mike suffered from some very unlucky rolls: he fired the Soviet Ampulomet Molotov cocktail thrower 3 times and rolled doubles every time. Result: the damn things blew up, devastated the firing hex (BLAZE marker) and broke the firing unit!

At the end, I pulled off a very close victoy (+4) as the Germans in the last turn. I learned the following things from this scenario:

- Flamethrowers in close combat are dangerous
- Ampulomets are dangerous to your own troups
- Close combat is mass slaughter

The Stalingrad scenario took us about 3 hours. At that time, the game store had already filled up considerably and chairs were becoming a rare commodity.

With several other players (Daniella, David, Nick) looking for a game, we decided on 2 quick rounds of Race for the Galaxy: Rebel vs Imperium without the takeover rules. It was very fun to play with Nick, who is obviously a RftG enthusiast as well.

By this point in time, several large games were slowly coming to an end. In order to coincide with their end, we decided on a quick and light filler.

After an initial hick-up from my side with the rules explanation (I suck at explaining rules other than Die Macher), the game went really quick and smooth. Unfortunately, John ended my winning streak of the day and turned me into 3:1.

After we had finished For Sale, Craig and Grant were looking for some players for Le Havre. As this is one of my favourite games, I quickly jumped on the bandwagon. David joined us and the fun began.

What never ceases to amaze me with Le Havre is many different roads to victory it allows. This time, everybody selected a completely different strategy than the previous game I had played. From my side, I focussed on getting ahead in the race for ships very early. Towards the end, I also dropped out of the race for steel (which I have typically done in the past) and instead I opted for the Shipping Lane twice.

Final score:

David (FluridCube) 107
Craig (cpalenshus) 122
Grant (grant5) 149
Michael (DaMilli) 154

I'd been meaning to try Blokus and I had a group of friends (Jarrod, Erin and my girlfriend) that like abstract games. We played two games back to back after we realized that it was a lot of fun. I managed to do so poorly the first game that I'm sure the others ignored me the second game allowing me to crush my previous -26 with a game winning -3 (which is really good for Blokus).

I continued my goal of playing all of the "new age classics" with finally playing El Grande(me and my lady played this game along with Russ and Phillip). I had a blast; there wasn't any soul crushing mental math and turn guessing, at least, not on the first play through there wasn't. Outside of that I'm glad I got a chance to try out a venerable(ish) title that seems to slowly be slipping out of favor with The Geek.

One day I'll add this game to my personal collection, but I need to get my personal game group more focused on games or expand my gaming group. I've got a lot of under played games in my collection (cough, cough, Agricola, cough).

This was my first game of the night. I played with Erin, Grant, Scott and David. This was my fourth play (including Origins) and I was still corrected on a couple important rules! Fortunately, Erin had played before and could help teach it correctly.

In our game, we saw Erin agree to a merger early on with Scott's company that left her as just an investor instead of a president and saw David with a company that had several tracks built at the bottom of England with no cubes worth anything to deliver. Amazingly, though, the scores were still very close at the end. I enjoyed my one victory of the evening!
