About This Project

This is an attempt to write an extensive (official) buildings reference. It will contain detailed information on the usage of each building and the interactions between some of them. Furthermore, it will answer some frequently asked questions that either have been asked in the past or might come up in the future. These data will be marked with filled stars ( ).

Some buildings aren't very useful in solo games, or may cause other potential problems. I'll address these issues after the factual data. Also, I might propose official and non-official variant ideas.

Finally, I'll drop some lines on each building talking about its strategic potential. This part is solely my opinion and shall not be considered official. It will be put in italics to seperate it from the factual data, and marked with empty stars ( ).

The texts are in English, the card images are in German. I will not add individual English card images to the database. It's already clogged up enough with the German ones.

I'll go through the buildings chronologically. I'll start with the start buildings, continue with the standard ones and, finally, add the special buildings in the order of publishing.

Update 2010/12/31: I've gone through all descriptions again and changed the wording here and there. I hope, this guide is now even more helpful.

Abbreviations

The abstracts of the building data follow this pattern:

[building symbol, price/value, additional symbols, entry fee]

d10-1 Building symbols: Craft (C), Economic (E), Industrial (I), No Building (N), Public (P), Ship (S)
d10-2 Price/value: the price in francs to purchase the building, and its franc value (incl. "+" for bonus buildings)
d10-3 Additional symbols: # + abbreviation; H = hammer, A = fishing
d10-4 Entry fee: F = franc, N = food, or "free", or "locked"
d10-5 If there is a building cost, it'll be posted as well.

Feel free to post comments or additional thoughts or improvements. I'll consider adding them to the original posts.

Thanks for all the thumbs and geekgold tips!

Flea Market

(Special Building)
[N, 2/2, 1A+1H, free]

"Take the tokens from one Offer space with exactly 2 goods (or Francs) and also all tokens from any Offer spaces with exactly 1 good (or Franc)."

On entry, take an Offer with exactly 2 goods.
Then take every Offer with exactly 1 good.
You may get 2-8 goods here.
You'll never get coal, hides or any upgraded good.
You may not enter this building if there is no Offer space with exactly 2 tokens.

Once the Flea Market is in play, keep an eye on which Offers you take to not enable another player a "jackpot" move.
Ownership of the Flea Market may be nice as you are guaranteed to use it when you need; also, you get both, a Fishing and Hammer symbol.
Occasionally, as good as a visit at the Marketplace.
The Flea Market becomes weaker towards the end of the game as most of the Offer spaces will have way more than 1-2 tokens.

Interesting, but absolutely irrelevant: The ordinal number of the Flea Market matches that of the Black Market and both deal with Offer spaces.

Inn

(Special Building)
[E, 4/4, -, 2N/1F]

"Convert any number of fish to smoked fish.
Sell up to 2 meat for 4 francs per meat."

You may convert any number of fish to smoked fish here.
You don't need to convert all of the fish you have.
You don't need to pay energy for the conversion.
Just flip as many fish tokens you like to their upgraded side.
Additionally, you may sell meat here. You may do this twice.
Receive 4 francs per meat from the general supply and return the meat there.
Don't take the francs from the Offer space.
You don't need to pay energy for the sale.
You don't need to smoke fish in order to sell meat here, nor do you need to sell meat if you just want to smoke fish.
You may not enter this building if you don't smoke at least 1 fish or sell at least 1 meat.

Finally: a Smokehouse without limitation.
Convert any number of fish to smoked fish and double your food.
However, you don't get any money for the conversion as you did at the Smokehouse.
You may also sell meat here if you like. This may even be the sole purpose of your visit.
4 francs is double the shipping value of meat.
Plus, you don't need to pay energy like you would on the Shipping Line.
Still, it's limited to 2 sales. This is a maximum of 8 francs per visit.
Ownership might be interesting if you can get the Bank.

Cannery Row

(Special Building)
[I, 8/8, -, 1N]

"Sell 1 iron and 4 smoked fishes for 18 francs.
Sell 1 iron and 3 meat for 16 francs."

You may sell smoked fish here. This costs 1 iron for the can.
Receive 18 francs for the sale from the general supply and return the iron and smoked fishes there.
Don't take the francs from the Offer space.
You don't need to pay energy for the sale.
Additionally, you may sell meat. This also costs 1 iron for the can.
Receive 16 francs for the sale from the general supply and return the iron and meat there.
Don't take the francs from the Offer space.
You don't need to pay energy for the sale.
You may do both sales, or just one of them. Both sales may only be done once per visit.
You may not enter this building if you don't sell at least 1 of these sets.

This building can be really, really great if maxed out.
Get 2 iron, 4 smoked fishes and 3 meat and sell them for 34 francs.
Done three times, you can earn over 100 francs.
This seems a lot, but don't forget how many actions it costs to do so.
1) You need to get 12 fishes and smoke them. This requires energy unless the Inn is in play. Without it, this is at least 4 actions, otherwise 2-3.
2) Then, you need to get 6 iron. Without any supportive buildings or dumb players who ignore the Iron Offer, this is at least 2 actions unless you have a lot of left-over iron from Marketplace visits or other buildings.
3) Finally, you need to get 9 meat. Usually, these need to be 9 slaughtered cows. This requires at least 2 actions.
Plus, you need to feed yourself during that process if you don't want to lose the resources. Hence, it's at least 6 actions if you're lucky, but usually rather 8 or more.
Ownership might be interesting if you can get the Bank.

Hides Trader

(Special Building)
[E, 6/6, -, 1N]

"Sell 6 hides for 18 francs."

You may sell exactly 6 hides for a total of 18 francs here.
Receive the money from the general supply and return the hides there.
Don't take the francs from the Offer space.
You don't need to pay energy for the sale.
You may not enter this building if you don't sell exactly 6 hides.

Effectively, you sell hides for 3 francs each. This is 1 franc better than its shipping value.
Plus, you don't need any energy like you would on the Shipping Line.
Still, you need to sell exactly 6 hides, no more, no less.
To get that number of hides, you might slaughter 12 cattle at the Abattoir.
Ownership might be interesting if you can get the Bank.

Fur Industry

(Special Building)
[I, 8/8, -, 2N]

"Pay 10 francs, then sell 3 hides for 22 francs."

This is one of three special buildings that require you to have a certain amount of francs before you may sell goods (see Leather Industry and Brick Manufacturer).
On entry, show that you've got at least 10 francs.
Then, return 3 hides to the general supply and take 12 francs from there.
Don't take the francs from the Offer space.
You don't need to pay energy for the sale.
You may not enter this building if you don't have at least 10 francs and 3 hides.

Effectively, you gain 12 francs for 3 hides.
This is double their combined shipping value.
Plus, you don't need any energy like you would on the Shipping Line.
Also, it's slightly better than the Hides Trader.
Be careful to keep 10 francs left if you intend to come back often. Don't spend everything on ships, for example.
It takes multiple visits to get rid of a larger amount of hides.
Ownership might be interesting if you can get the Bank.

Department of Agriculture

(Special Building)
[P, 6/6, -, 1F]

"1 meat per Economic symbol, 1 bread per Craft symbol."

On entry, count the number of Economic and Craft symbols on all of your buildings.
Take 1 meat per Economic and 1 bread per Craft symbol from the general supply.
You may not enter this building if you don't have at least 1 Economic or Craft symbol.

Easy way to get some additional food, especially if you max out the Marketplace, Town Hall or Bank.
This building works well with bread and meat selling buildings.
    • Works extremely well with the Bakery and Baguette Shop.
    • Works well with the Forest Hut, Pâtisserie, and Steakhouse.
    • Works OK with the Diner, Inn, and Cannery Row.
Ownership might be interesting if you can get the Town Hall.

Department of Economics

(Special Building)
[E, 6/6, -, 1N]

"1 iron per Industrial symbol, 2 francs per Economic symbol."

On entry, count the number of Industrial and Economic symbols on all of your buildings.
Take 1 iron per Industrial and 2 francs per Economic symbol from the general supply.
You may not enter this building if you don't have at least 1 Economic or Industrial symbol.

Good way to get additional iron and some money, especially if you try to max out the Bank.
In this case, it may easily yield more iron than the Ironworks and a good amount of additional money.
See it as a way to get your Bank bonus earlier, or even over and over again.
Needless to say, ownership is mandatory if you can get the Bank.

Stockmarket

(Special Building)
[E, 12/6, -, locked]

"Whenever another player takes Francs from the Offer space, the owner receives 1 Franc from the Treasury. When another player builds the Bank, the owner receives 3 Francs. The owner does not pay Interest on Loans."

One of 2 interactive special buildings in the 'Le Grand Hameau' expansion. Another one is the Souvenir Shop.
This building cannot be entered as an action.
As the owner, you receive 1 franc from the Treasury whenever an opponent takes the Franc Offer.
Consequently, you don't get that extra franc when you take the Franc Offer yourself.
When the Bank is built by an opponent, you receive 3 francs from the Treasury.
Again, you don't get these when you build the Bank yourself, or when the town builds it, or someone buys it.
Finally, as long as you remain the owner of the Stockmarket, you don't pay interest anymore.

Recommendation: Remove this building before the game if playing solo.
This is an interactive building you won't be happy about if playing solo.

At first glance, the benefits seem to be tremendously good.
Keep in mind, though, that you sacrifice 6 francs in order to get them.
The Franc Offer gets taken frequently in the early game. Later, it won't be taken too often and if it grows too much, you rather might consider to take it yourself.
Also, to max it out, you'd need to pass on the Bank. Paradoxically, the Stockmarket has an Economic symbol.
The most interesting thing about this building, however, is its ability to save you the interest payments. Get it early in a 4-5 player game and you can save up to 15 francs of interest. However, don't forget the cool part about a loan strategy: every time the interest payment is coming, you get rid of your money to get another loan and 3 francs. This won't work anymore if you own the Stockmarket! You won't get new money through loans as usual.
The Stockmarket is a strong building, but you need to know the side-effects to really benefit from it the most.

Souvenir Shop

(Special Building)
[E, 10/8, -, locked]

"The owner receives 1 Franc from the Treasury whenever another player enters one of his/her buildings."

One of 2 interactive special buildings in the 'Le Grand Hameau' expansion. Another one is the Stockmarket.
This building cannot be entered as an action.
As the owner, you receive 1 franc from the Treasury whenever an opponent enters one of your buildings.
Consequently, you don't get the franc if you enter one of your own buildings.

Recommendation: Remove this building before the game if playing solo.
This is an interactive building you won't be happy about if playing solo.

This building is quite similar to the Arts Centre with the difference that you get your money wihtout taking an action.
Effectively, the Souvenir Shop raises entry costs by 1 franc with the difference that you get the additional payment from the supply and not from your opponents.
It works extremely well with a heavy building strategy, especially if you own the most frequently used buildings.
Ownership might be especially interesting if you can get the Bank.

Wrecker's

(Special Building)
[I, 6/6, -, 1F]

"Convert up to two times 3 food to 2 wood, 2 clay and 1 iron."

Either pay 3 food to get 2 wood, 2 clay and 1 iron.
Or pay 6 food to get 4 wood, 4 clay and 2 iron.
Take the goods from the supply, not the Offer spaces.
You don't need to pay energy for the conversion.
You may not enter this building if you don't have at least 3 food to convert.

Wrecker's is best in the beginning of the game when there is a fight for building resources.
For a little food you get enough resources to build most early buildings.
Late in the game, its value decreases as you won't need wood and clay anymore.
Ownership might be interesting if you can get the Bank.

Blast Furnace

(Special Building)
[I, 10/10, -, 3N/2F]

"Convert up to six times 3 energy to 1 iron."

This is the only building that deals with energy only.
Pay 3 energy to get 1 iron. You may do this up to six times.
Pay the energy as a total, not per iron.
Take the iron from the general supply, not the Offer space.
You may not enter this building if you don't have at least 3 energy to convert.

The Blast Furnace is a perfect way to get lots of iron late in the game.
You can max out on it with just 2 coke or 6 (char)coal.
This is a little better than the Ironworks if you've got enough energy.
Ownership might be interesting if you can get the Bank.

Biofuel Facility

(Special Building)
[I, 8/8, 1H, locked]

"The owner can pay the energy required for the Shipping Line with Grain. Each Grain is worth 2 energy."

This building cannot be entered as an action.
As the owner, you may pay the energy costs at the Shipping Line with grain.
Each grain is worth 2 energy for the purpose of shipping.
Grain used for energy cannot be shipped, and shipped grain does not count as energy.
This ability is limited to the Shipping Line only. It doesn't work anywhere else in the game.

This is a very nice building if you tend to have lots of suprlus grain you haven't had the time to bake.
As the owner of the Biofuel Facility, you now can use 4 ships at the Shipping Line for 1 coke and 1 grain, or just 6 grain.
Don't hesitate to purchase this building. It doesn't have the usual franc sacrifice and has a Hammer symbol that you might need at the Clay Mound or Colliery.
Ownership might be especially interesting if you can get the Bank.

Ranch

(Special Building)
[E, 10/6+, -, locked]

"At the end of the game, value increases by 2 francs per cattle."

This is the only bonus building in the 'Le Grand Hameau' expansion.
This building cannot be entered as an action.
Count your left-over cattle at the end of the game.
As the owner, each of your cattle is worth 2 francs.
Meat is no cattle and, thus, does not count.
Bonus points are cumulative. If you also happen to own the Storehouse, each cattle is worth 2.5 francs.

This is a very interesting building. Usually, you'd like to ship cattle for 3 francs each. As the owner of the Ranch, you now don't need to ship them anymore.
Although you only get 2 francs per cattle (instead of 3 at the Shipping Line), you don't need to waste shipping capacity with cattle anymore.
Please note, though, you need at least 2 cattle to even out what you overpay to get the Ranch.
The Ranch does not only support shipping. Quite the contrary - it supports non-shipping strategies even better.
Ownership might be especially interesting if you can get the Bank.

Trading Firm

(Special Building)
[E, 6/6, -, 1N]

"Exchange up to 4 goods for any number of goods from the Supply with the same total Franc value."

Converts 1-4 goods to any number of other goods.
On entry, turn in 1-4 goods and total their shipping values.
Now, spend this virtual money on any number of goods from the general supply.
You're free to take any kind of good, even steel, as long as you've got enough virtual money left.
You have to spend all the virtual money.
Take the goods from the supply, not the Offer spaces.
You may not enter this building if you don't convert at least 1 good for another one.

This is the most flexible good converter in Le Havre!
As long as you can pay it, you can get whatever good you want, except francs (which, in fact, are not considered goods anyway).
Here are a few examples that will illustrate the power of the Trading Firm:
    • Trade in 2 cattle and 2 grain for 1 steel.
    • Trade in 4 leather for 2 steel.
    • Trade in 4 coke for 2 steel and 2 iron.
    • Trade in 4 steel for 32 fishes, wood, clay or grain.
Although the last example sounds insane, it isn't that powerful. Who on earth will sacrifice 4 steel to get a huge bunch of fishes? Of course, there might be a combo like Trading Firm, Inn and Fish Restaurant. In this case, you'd make 96 francs with 3 actions by sacrificing 4 steel. Don't forget, though, how many actions were needed to get the steel in the first place.
Ownership might be interesting if you can get the Bank.

Trafficking Spot

(Special Building)
[N, 4/4, -, free]

"Exchange up to 3 standard goods for 3 other standard goods (except iron) from the Supply.
Exchange up to 3 upgraded goods for 3 other upgraded goods (except steel) from the Supply."

On entry, turn in 1-3 standard goods and take the same number of other standard goods.
Take the goods from the general supply, not the Offer spaces.
You may not take iron, but you may turn it in.
Additionally, turn in 1-3 upgraded goods and take the same number of other upgraded goods.
You may not take steel, but you may turn it in.
You may do both exchanges or just one of them.
You don't need to pay energy for these exchanges.
You may not enter this building if you don't exchange at least 1 good.

This is another flexible good converter, yet limited.
You may trade standard goods for other standard goods, or upgraded goods for other upgraded goods.
Here are some examples for legal trades:
    • Turn in 2 grain, 1 fish and 2 smoked fishes to get 3 coal and 2 coke.
    • Turn in 3 fishes to get 2 cattle and 1 grain.
    • Turn in 2 bricks and 1 charcoal to get 3 leather.
The Trafficking Spot is especially useful late in the game when you have some spare goods that you'd like to trade for something else.
Ownership might only be interesting for the Arts Centre or Souvenir Shop.

Major Corporation

(Special Building)
[E, 20/20, -, 3F]

"You may take 1 of each good (except Francs) from the Supply, as long as you already have at least 1 of that type of good. If you take Steel, it costs you an additional 3 Francs."

On entry, check your goods: for each type of good that you already have, gain 1 additional token from the general supply.
If you've got steel, decide whether you also want to get 1 additional steel. In this case, pay 3 francs to the Treasury.
You don't pay the owner of the Major Corporation if you get steel!
The maximum you can get here is 16 good tokens: one of each, standard and upgraded good.
You may not enter this building if you don't have any goods, or if you only have steel, but less than 3 francs.

The Major Corporation has the most expensive entry cost of all buildings so far.
No wonder: you can get up to 15 resources for 3 francs (entry fee), and steel for only 3 more francs (that you pay to the supply!).
Even with only half the output, it's a tremedously good building.
Ownership is definitely worth it, although it is a very expensive building.
It's even more interesting if you can get the Bank.

Emporium

(Special Building)
[E, 6/6, -, 1F]

"Buy as many different upgraded goods as you choose: Smoked Fish, Charcoal, Brick, Bread, Meat and Leather for 1 Franc each; Coke for 3 Francs; and Steel for 5 Francs."

You may purchase 1-8 upgraded goods here for the given prices.
You may not buy two or more of the same good.
You may not enter this building if you don't have any money.

You can go a little shopping here if you've got some spare francs.
All prices are lower than the shipping values of the goods.
You need 14 francs to buy all 8 upgraded goods.
Most of the time, you might want to visit the Emporium for some cheap food or steel.
Ownership might be interesting if you can get the Bank.

Cobbler's

(Special Building)
[C, 6/6, -, 1N]

"Convert any number of leather to 2 bread and 2 francs per leather."

You may trade any number of leather for food and money here.
Receive 2 bread and 2 francs per leather from the general supply and return the leather there.
Don't take the francs from the Offer space.
You don't need to pay energy for the conversion.
You don't need to convert all of your leather.
You may not enter this building if you don't convert at least 1 leather.

The deal isn't bad at all: for each leather, you get half of its shipping value and 2 bread.
Considering the shipping value of bread, you get double the shipping value of leather here.
You might get even more if there are some bread consuming buildings.
Anyway, let's not forget how hard it is to get leather in decent amounts. This building won't be visited more than once per player, but definitely is worth a visit if you've got some leather.
Ownership might be interesting if you can get the Town Hall.

Special Buildings (Promo cards)

Essen 2010 Promotional Special Buildings

There are 3 special buildings that were published as promotional cards at the Essen Toy Fair 2010. Two of them were given away for free, one of them, the Toy Fair card, was only published in German in the Lookout Games catalogue.

Essen 2012 Promotional Special Building

The "Tablet with App" card has been published for the Essen toy fair 2012 to promote the official Le Havre app in the iOS app store.

Interesting, but totally irrelevant: The Rattletrap car and Wholesale Bakery were initially planned to be part of "Le Grand Hameau".

Rattletrap car

(Special Building)
[P, •/–2, -, 1N]

"The Rattletrap car must be taken by the next player getting at least 1 Iron (not Steel)."

The Rattletrap car is worth –2 francs at the end of the game.
The first player to get 1 or more iron must take the Rattletrap car regardless of how he got the iron.
The Rattletrap car cannot be sold, i.e. you can't get rid of it.
You can't prevent taking the Rattletrap car by any means.
The Rattetrap car comes with a Car symbol that serves no purpose other than theme.

Not as big a deal. At first, people will fear taking iron, but as soon as you can get your hands on 3 or more Iron, I guess it's worth doing so despite the –2 francs that it's worth.
It may even be worth +2 Francs at the end of the game if you can get the Town Hall.

Wholesale Bakery

(Special Building)
[E, 8/8, -, 1N]

"Sell any number of bread for 2 francs per bread."

You may sell any number of bread for money here.
Receive 2 francs per bread from the general supply, and return the bread there.
Don't take the francs from the Offer space.
You don't need to pay energy for the sale.
You don't need to convert all of your bread.
You may not enter this building if you don't sell at least 1 bread.

2 francs is 1 franc less than the shipping value of bread.
However, you don't need any energy like you would on the Shipping Line.
Plus, the Wholesale Bakery is unlimited.
Ownership might be interesting if you can get the Bank.

If you have 8-15 francs, you get 2 francs for free.
If you have 16-23 francs, you get 4 francs for free.
If you have 24 or more francs, you get 6 francs for free.
You may not enter this building if you don't have at least 8 francs.

Toy Fair

(Special Building)
[N, 4/4, -, 1F]

"Take 1 loan card and 6 different goods (except Steel)."

On entry, you get 1 loan card (but no money for the loan!).
Then you get to choose 6 different resources, basic or upgraded or a mix of them, except Steel.
Take the goods from the general supply, not the Offer spaces.
The loan you get is treated as any other loan.
You can pay it back for 5 francs and you lose 7 francs at the end of the game if you don't.
You have to pay interest as per the normal rules.
This building comes with a Pöppel symbol that serves no purpose other than theme.

Before the 2017 reprint, the card number has been E2010.
Including the entry fee, you're effectively paying 6 francs to get 6 different goods.
You can get high value resources easily. Unfortunately, you don't get Steel.
This building works well with loan-based strategies.
