I bet if I did a poll the majority of people would choose Shogun over Wallenstien or Small World over Vinci. These are basically rehashed version of the same game, or as close to it that polaying one allows you to know enough to pick up the other. I am not interested in comparing those. But I am interested in getting the opinion of BGG on some very good games and their comparison with a predecessor from an earlier age.

Some may argue and inevitably will, that the comparisons are poor and that better comparisons could be made. All I can say is ... feel free to make them. But consider this list a battle of old versus new. Will the wise old origianls win the day or will the cult of the new and the flood of new gamers win the day. Feel free to thumb your favourite in each contest.

Advanced civ was the beginning of true strategy gaming for me and it contains everything a man could ever want in a game. Battles of power and pride for territory, cunning trading, and masterful game spanning strategy.

In comparison to Advanced civ this looks like a stroll in the park at 4 hours. Although it doesn't have the deep emersive atmosphere of civ it still requires the important elements of a civ building game and lets you see immediate fruits for your labours. Things happen very slowly in adv civ but much quicker in through the ages.

There is not really a top 50 game to compare the might of acquire against but powergrid will do. Acquire is a stock market game where the activities of the companies are governed by the placing of numbered tiles. Invest and merge and reinvest again. Although it was originally themed as a Hotels instead, no sharemarket game has ever come near this.

Is power grid truely a game of economics, I think so. Because the auctions, the resources and links all rely on money to purchase it becomes the central theme. Why do we love Power Grid? I suspect it is the elements of timing and tension that make this the modern day economic Colossus.

To be honest I don't know what it is about railroad mechanics that have spawned so many similar games. Yet I love them as do many world wide. The 18xx series is one of the grand daddies of them all and is the inspiration for some of the best.

Steam is the direct evolution of many years of work and pretty much nobody, irrespective of where they sit on the political railroad landscape, would doubt the brilliance of this line of games. Steam is the latest are is a fine candidate to represent the new.

This is one of the best contrasts of the old and new to my mind. The old has the basic brilliance that lead politicians on both sides of the Atlantic to love this game. In diplomacy you have an elegantly simple mechanic which, when mixed with human interaction creates an infinitely complex problem that can be repeated unending times. Perhaps the best game design of all time. Put it on the board!

At its core A game of Thrones is essentially a game of diplomacy with Steroids. But the new error of games demands added complexiety and a bunch of smoke and mirrors that lead people to ahve more control than they do. You can hide the underlying power structure and even mitigate it a little with clever manipulation, but ultimately a partner with your neighbour will see you both in very good stead for the end game.

Of all the two player asbstracts that have tried to compete with chess Go has found the most appeal with geeks. It is simplier in its mechanics than chess and perhaps it is this elegance of design that most typifies this type of game in the 21st century.

I confess I have never played up-front but I have played my fair share of hex and counter games that littered the gaming world in the 80's (sorry but I don't remember the 70's). What is great about old wargames is the attention to detail and the sense of playing as the generals did. Well for the kid in me, anyway.

Just as emersive as the older wargames but mechanically more in the style of modern euro games. Card driven games give a different spin on the traditional luck of older wargames but there is a dice there to let you feel the 'surrounding complexiety'.

I've haven't played more than one game of Talisman in the last five years, but with the 4th edition there could be opportunities. Talisman is a light hearteded game with all those fun roleplaying elements to it that is better when you get 'in character' than otherwise.

The dungeon crawl games of today are beautiful. Decent is no exception with its crafted minatures. Games are more complex and tactical now, but the same thematic feel of Talisman or Heroquest is still there.
