Like so many other gamers, I must credit BGG for: (1) Renewing my interest in gaming, and (2) Introducing me to European style games such as Puerto Rico & Carcassone. However, I'm often surprised at some of the "rules too complicated" comments attributed to some of the Euro style games. Here is a list of games I bought when I was a kid (way back when...) I'm not saying I played all of them, but their rulebooks were certainly a struggle!

My very first "wargame" purchase. I found an Avalon Hill brochure in my copy of Baseball Strategy, and was intrigued by the "10" complexity rating attributed to this game. I had to have it! After all, how complicated could it be? Yeah, right.

One of these days, I'll actually try to get a handle on this. In the meantime, it sits on the shelf - - where it's been for many years.

Not necessarily a complex game, but a ridiculously complex rulebook. A great game that requires someone else to teach it to you.

A terrific solitaire game. I've actually played this one many times. When opponents are hard to find, great solitaire games are a treat - - even complex ones.

Tons of rules but, they're laid out in a very logical format. A decent game, but too many little cardboard chits can make it a bit tedious.

Another terrific solitaire game but with a bit of a twist. The system forces the player to actually switch sides when things get a bit lopsided.

I loved this game as a "pre-teen". I was delighted to find my original TSR copy a couple months ago. As I perused the rules. . . my delight turned to horror. I have no idea how we managed to get through the game's rules as kids. The microfiche sized font, the utter chaos . . . It must have been the love of the theme that carrier us. I've since learned of cleaner rules online and plan to pick them up so I can introduce my gaming pals to this venerable gem.

I hear people even complaining about this one. Heck, we were 10 and 8 and figured it out, no problem (enjoyed the game, too!) War of the Ring, Rise and Decline of the 3rd Reich, Divine Right, AD&D; the only one we did not manage to crack was Struggle of Nations- that game we only managed to finish a couple turns before succumbing. I always have to chuckle when I read here on the Geek of people talking about all the hard rules they find these days...

There are good games with complicated rules, and bad games with complicated rules, and then there are games that are just plain complicated - so complicated that you don't even want to try playing the game.

This is the case with Dragoon vs. Hussar, a game which must surely be the definitive treatment of mounted personal combat in the Napoleonic era. But oh, what a rulebook! I'll take the ASL "acronym alphabet soup" over this one any day...

I got this one after reading "Red Storm Rising" and, of course, "Hunt for Red October," which has a game of its own. After reading the rule book, with interesting things like "you'll need graph paper to locate the ships and planes you will encounter..." (not an exact quote), I thought, "Boy, this would be better as a computer game!"

Duh. There it is. As a board game, no. Just an exercise in bookkeeping. After Magic Realm and Star Fleet Battles, this one seemed complex to me!!!

I would have been about 15 when this came out, and I went on a trip to London by myself just to buy it. My biggest game map yet - the persian gulf area centering on Iran (how quaint that seems now) - 100s of pieces and a 78 page rulebook.

Needless to say I couldn't find anyone to play it with.

Later one of my younger brothers borrowed it whilst I was at Uni and managed to get a friend to lose the rulebook - all 78 pages of it.

I still have the rest of the game, but without the rules I am less likely to find someone to play it with than ever.

At least it isn't Drang Nach Osten.

Talk about meat (and chrome). This made 3rd Reich look straight forward (and I've played both many times with many folks - and had fun).

I managed many "difficult" games before, but this one was much too much for me. Understanding the rules may take long, but finding players who are willing to read the rules too takes more than a lifetime...
