Well, this list is obviously more of a fishing expedition, but I have managed to find a few things to start from. Basically, this list is to get together a set of games to help bring family (spouses, kids, etc) into the idea of newer boardgames without having to deal with the competitive element...but also not risking monetary expenditure.

To that end, the requirements for addition are:

The game is free (web published preferred, naturally)

The game is print-and-play (web based games not applicable)

The game is co-op ('race' games or everyone-against-the-system dungeon crawls or whatnot also allowed, I suppose, but the ultimate goal is no player competition or direct conflict)

The list is open for additions - if I've missed something, feel free to add it! Please, do,though, consider the above three points. These are REQUIREMENTS for this list. One specific thing to keep in mind (which, unfortunately, some of BGGs categories do not): one team of several people vs another team of several people is NOT a "cooperative game".

From the publisher:

A quick co-op / competitive game of anarchy and destruction for 3 to 4 demigods.

The end of days draws near. The ruler of the Pantheon will be whomever has the most devout followers in Heaven. You’d like it to be you. Be careful, though! The God of the Underworld has always resented his (or her) position, and may try to subvert our followers to meet his own ends.

From the designer:

"I hosted the “Let’s Make a Game” panel at ProtoCon 9 (http://www.protocon.com/) for the second year in a row this year. Last year’s panel resulted in Cetacean Ascension Moonbase 8 (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/25952). This year’s brainstorming session started with the following premises:

'Screw other players over, co-operative play, religion theme, quick pace, explosions, diceless, guns, apocalypse.'
...and this is the game that came of it."

Personal comment:

...well, it says co-op. I can't imagine how the rest of the description allows that to be true, though ('screw other players over' and 'co-operative play' APPEAR to be mutually exclusive), but will have to try and comment.

From the Publisher:

Dead of Night is a 1 to 6 player game based on scenarios you might recognize from various zombie films. There is no 'Zombie Master' here: all the players are on the same side, all working together to survive, although the option to use other players as zombie bait while you grab all the guns and lock yourself in the cellar is there if you prefer.
Either way, you will need to use strategy and your (fresh and spicy) brains as well as chainsaws and shotguns to make it through the night.

Personal Comment:

Free? Zombies? Print-and-play? Zombies? Co-op? Zombies? What's not to like!

From the Publisher:

In D-Day Dice, players are soldiers trying to organize improvised units for an attack against the machine gun nest. Each player starts the game with a unit of a few soldiers and nothing else. As the game progresses, he will collect resources and advance on the beach, sector by sector, as his unit grows stronger and deadlier. He will succeed... or die trying.

This game is designed to be played with regular dice (d6), but can also be played with homemade specialty dice. All you need is a score sheet with a small battle map.

D-Day Dice can be played solitaire or multiplayer co-op, where all players play their turn simultaneously (and can even trade dice).

Personal Comment:

A free (mostly*), co-op, wargame? Seems promising! The 'solitaire' capability of it (indeed, major factor, it seems) DOES seem like it would make the multiplayer version feel more like 'multiplayer solitaire'...but maybe not?

* There does seem to be a lot of paid content for this. Special dice you can buy, maps, etc. Still, the core element seems free, so...perhaps it's the best of both worlds?

This is another one where I'm blown away by what some people can do with it:

From the publisher:

CR 3.0 is a skirmish set of rules that can be played with any figures you may already have. CR 3.0 is a great way to learn the Reaction System used in over twenty products by Two Hour Wargames. It streamlines and updates the previous 2.0 rules and brings them more in line with the many present day THW products. CR 3.0 is essentially a THW lite version given to the gamer at no cost. 28 pages plus 6 pages of charts.

Personal comment:

Another case of something that could be considered a 'demo'. Free to print-and-play, it DOES have co-op elements (also solitaire), but it's also just a sampler of a larger game set.

From the designer:

Automated alert systems have awakened the crew from Cryo-sleep. But why?

Deep Space Disaster is the game of Deep Space... and Disasters!

Each player takes on the role of a crew member of the perpetually troubled starship Rabidus Traba. Players move about and explore by laying cards representing different areas of the ship, thus forming the game board. As more areas are revealed and useful items are accumulated, things start going wrong, and the closer the ship comes to disaster!

The players don't know when it will happen or even what the disaster may be until it strikes. The disaster scenario will then lay out how the crew must work together to overcome and survive.

Personal comment:

It fits the bill, but does have a 'traitor' mechanic. That would need to be omitted for a true 'co-op' version of the game.

With a playing time of approximately thirty minutes, PLANET X-PLOITS is a light strategy game where selfishness and campy role playing are all part of the fun.

PLANET X-PLOITS is a tile game where missions to take place in a different area of the planet offering a fresh new challenge each and every time. The game supports two to four players playing one of four possible stereotypes each with their own unique characteristics and abilities.

A Sci-Fi themed co-op, free, print-and-play? Hmmm...this might even be better than the zombies ones!

From the publisher:

Venturers in Argent is a fantasy boardgame set in the World of Argent. It is a cooperative game in which as many as five players can participate, or as few as one (thus it is suitable for solitaire play). The players take on the parts of venturers, who set out to find treasure on a dangerous enterprise called a venture. The game can be played as a single venture in one session, or as a campaign of several ventures, with the power and abilities of the venturers increasing as they prepare for their final objective: the stronghold of the Silent Mountain … and the One Who Waits.

Personal Comment:

This time, a fantasy theme with a print-and-play. Not a bad idea, but it doesn't seem to have a big following on the 'geek? No pictures, no reviews, few comments, and it doesn't necessarily seem possible to get, anymore?

From the designer:

Once upon a time there was a kingdom covered with an endless, almost impenetrable wilderness. In the dark depths of the forests and swamps of this realm, horrible beasts and dragons lurked, often terrorizing the helpless farmers and village dwellers of the kingdom. In order to make an end to the terror and rid the country from the bestial scourge, the king summoned the bravest and most fearless heroes from all four corners of the country. He sent them on a noble quest to free the country of all dragons and foul beasts, to make the kingdom a safe place to live in.
Unfathomable peril, but also treasure, gold and glory await the fearless Dragonslayers!

The goal of the game:
is to slay all monsters without being killed. You can either play solo or two players. If you play two players, the player who slew the most monsters in the end wins. If you play solo, you can set a high score in your first game which you can try to beat in further games by trying to beat the game in as few turns as possible while amassing a maximum of gold!

Personal comment:

Unfortunately, another almost-solitaire title. It's co-op or competitive...depending on how you keep score. I suppose it counts, but...I dunno, you could play Chess that way, too. Doesn't seem like it'd fit the spirit of the game, though.

From the designer:
“Solo Dice Game. Simulation of an American solo F-14 Bombing Mission in the Middle East circa 1987. Pretty much like Microprose F-15 II. No realism, I think no Tomcat would do a solo bombing mission.”

“Mission: The mission consists 25 waypoints, first and last of which is home base. Draw the waypoints as circles connected with lines on a piece of paper. There are two targets in a mission, primary and secondary targets. First target is 2d6 waypoints from the 1st waypoint, the second 2d6 waypoints from the first target. Roll on the target table to determine what the targets are.”

“Scoring: Keep a running tally of points and kills while you play. You get awarded medals and promotions accordingly. You start with no medals and at a rank of 2nd Lt.”

Rules for a two-player cooperative variant are included.

Personal comment:

Including this because we TOTALLY NEED MORE GAMES LIKE THIS. Flying fighter missions (whether it be F-14s over Libya, Fokker Dr.1s over Flanders, or Starfuries through Non-Aligned Worlds neutral space) makes a great opportunity for 2, 3, or 4 players to all be on the same 'side' working against game-system-generated opponents.

Heck, in B-17: Queen of the Skies and B-29 Superfortress, the idea of a solo bombing mission has already been embraced! Why not take that kind of idea and make a co-op game out of it, with all players representing elements of the attack mission?

This game has a touch of that, and is worthy of note for that reason! Free, print-and-play, co-op!

From the designer:
"There’s something alien in Deep Space Outpost 233-B, and it’s hungry. Will you figure out how to neutralize it before it eats you?"

Space Monster is a cooperative exploration / suspense / combat game for one to five players. Your goal is to figure out the space monster’s weaknesses and stop it before it eats everyone on the space station – including you! This brings up an important point: The game is actually only mostly cooperative. if things get really dire, you can make a run for the sole one-person escape pod. If you escape and the monster eats everyone else, you win!

During play, you search the outpost for weapons and items to help you neutralize the monster. You may also have to go to specific rooms to perform tasks, like restarting the failing generator, pumping up the life support system, or overriding the safety systems on the airlock. Each player gets one action per turn and an allotment of movement points. The monster also gets at least one action and move every turn.

Space Monster uses a modular, card-based board, special powers for each player, a deck of special powers for the monster, and an unusual deck-based hit point system for the monster. When the monster takes damage, it loses cards from its health deck. When all damage is dealt, the instructions on the card on top the the discarded health cards tells you how the monster reacts. If you draw the special Dying Gasp card, you know the monster is almost dead.

From the Publisher:

12 Realms is a fast and lighthearted cooperative game for 1 to 6 players. All players must band together to stop the Dark Lords overwhelming hordes from pillaging the 12 Realms. Individual invaders can be defeated by using each hero’s different talents, but to vanquish the Dark Lords you must claim a powerful artifact.

In their quest to stop the invasion, the heroes can travel together between different lands, or they can try to single-handedly defend a Realm. Each of the 12 Realms is an individual land, with its different treasures, events, and populated by unique creatures.

Personal Comment:

The artwork for this one is very well done!

When the game is finished there will be 12 different maps (realms) to play on. Each will have a different theme, enemies, and end-boss. There are currently 3 realms available for play.

I have not played this yet. I have printed and cut out all the components, but the cards looked so good that I have ordered a set from Artscow and they arrive in a week. The theme really appeals to me and my kids are excited about it too.

From reading the rules, it sounds like it is well designed. It may have a bit of a Pandemic feel to it as you try to clear each of the areas of enemies and collect artifact pieces to defeat the bosses. I am excited to try it out.

From the publisher:
Castaways (Náufragos) is a cooperative game about 4 Castaways that are stranded on an Island. They have to cooperate to escape from the island, improve the shelter, gather food and wood to keep the campfire on, among other tasks.
But only one player will be the winner, and that is the one that writes the best story at the end of the game. The one that lives the greater adventure of all the pack.

Personal Comment This is a great PnP coop game, I can say is semi-coop as at the end there is only one winner, but escaping from the island is hard, and all the players need to cooperate to escape and scout the island.

It has a small caveat, as it is only in Spanish, and the cards had lots of text, it is also a kind of narrative game, as each card tolds you a small story.

From the Rules

Your team of North Pole denizens must work together to prevent the greatest tragedy of all time: No Christmas. A blizzard is heading for the North Pole and snow is making certain areas impassible. To win you must work together as a group to clear the snow around Santa’s Castle so that you can complete the four required tasks and return to the castle by flying reindeer before time runs out. If however, the countdown clock runs out before you can complete your tasks, there will be no Christmas and Everyone, Everywhere will lose.

This is a cooperative Print and Play game for 2 - 4 players designed for the Great 2010 Christmas Print and Play Game Design Contest. The files are available for download here:

Sink the Carrier is a co-op game, where each player take control of one Douglas SBD Dauntless, a dive bomber, on board the USS Yorktown carrier during the early days of May 1942 in the Coral Sea. The objective is to find and sink one of the Japanese Air Carriers. The Japanese army wins if players lose a certain number of planes or if the USS Yorktown is sunk.

Each turn you have to choose between different actions, move between sea zones, attack enemy planes, or search for the Japanese carrier. All dice rolls are based on poker hands--the better hand you roll, the more efficient the action is. You can reroll as many times as you want as long as you have enough fuel and time. Time is a precious commodity in the game. You have to beat a certain number of event cards each day before the clockwatch runs out.

You will get trophies when you destroy enemy planes, which help your piloting skills improve. You will prepare for the final Dive Bomb, a risky attack maneuver, for which you only have one bomb. Fail and you will have to come back to the carrier reload. Hit the deck, and the explosion can crack the carrier with just one hit.

From the rules:
''Space jump technology opened the way for humanity to reach to the stars. But soon, exploration ships began to vanish. Hostile eyes had been drawn to earth, and from the void of space, a fleet of deadly ships emerged, intent on our destruction.''

''The fleets are closing on Earth. Only a handful of hastily assembled ships stand in their path. They must destroy the invaders, or Earth will perish.''

A solo or cooperative card game for 1-4 players.

Game description:

Each turn, cards showing Invaders advance on the Earth across three possible different sectors. Each invader ship will add new upgrades and weapons as it approaches the Earth and new cards are drawn to reveal its abilities.

Players then draw and play cards representing the ships and weapons of the Earth fleets. Each ship has a mix of missles, lasers and shields, and most ships have special abilities. Players play ships to different sectors and use them to play missile and shield cards to attack the invaders.

The players must destroy 6 of the invading ships to win. If two invaders get past the fleet, the Earth is destroyed.
