What do you do when you're waiting for that fifth player to arrive, while someone dashes off to pacify the family members they left at home for the evening, or as light relief between those two longer games? Do you pull out the cards, pull out the dice, or flip the top on another cold one.

Card games

This list does a great job of summing up all the popular choices. In fact if you started your collection of games with just these then you would be in good stead .. for awhile at least. If I choose a card game

My personal preferences run
Fairy Tale
No Thanks
Corsari

Dexterity games

Dexterity games don't genreally take a long time but they can be very large. You almost need a whole room just to stack these up. IN some cases (like pitchcar) clearing the space and setting up the game takes twice as long as actually playing it.

My personal favourites
Tumblin Dice
Pitchcar (it doesn't take long to PLAY)
Sorry Sliders

Abstracts

Two player abstracts by their nature can be played two ways. Fast and furious with a timer (measuring your mental agility) or slow and stubborn (measuring deep strategic thought). I rather like playing games like chess with a minute timer. You start half way and then turn after you have played your move, kind of like a chess clock. The kicker here is that if you win on time, it is not because the other player used all their time, it is just they used more than you. Games don't take very long and quite often reach a conclusion as one player gets desperate and tries to win on time.

My favorites with this style of play
Othello
Chess
Hive

Beer

This is a bit disingenious because I don't drink anything heavier than Coke, but the principle of forsaking games for a while to have a drink and a catchup in these filler times is growing on me more and more. There was a time when I would forget to give people a drink at my place, because I was too excited about getting Age of Steam on the table. Hopefully I have moved on. All the cold drinks are in a beer fridge in our lounge, so if we happen to watch a little football while we wait for others theres no harm.

My personal three favourites
Steinlager
Heineken
Tui
