This is a list of those games with inserts so horrible that you throw them away because they don't seem to go with the game or prevent you from getting the lid back on once you punch and sort the pieces.

I know there is a sect of BGG that throws away inserts as a matter of principle for all their games. This list is not for them.

If this list has been done before I didn't find it. Please add link if you know it exists.

The list is sorted by Rank.

This list is the inverse of the list of good box inserts (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/39675) and boxes big enough to store expansions (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/28382)

The insert was great for shipping but for storage isn't so great. Once you put the cards in sleaves and put the cubes in containers...out goes the insert.

I can't believe no-one has added this.

The box insert looks perfect. You would imagine that it is designed specifically to hold all the components in appropriate order. Certainly the recesses all seem to the be the right size.

But nothing bloody fits! Worst of all are the tiles. You have three types and six recesses, so you assume that you should use two recesses per for each of the A,B,C tiles. But, oh no. They don't split down like that at all.

You will note that this chap has carefully bagged and boxed everything, but still the boxes are standing proud of the inset. I bet he can't get his lid on.

My current bete noir: it's my partner's game, and she refuses to replace the insert with a tacklebox.

Vikings comes with a lot of tiles. The box inset has nice shaped oubliettes to store them in. Then there's space for the folded board to lie flat on top, keeping them all tucked away. Then there's a gap of about 10mm... Hang on! Originally I think this was filled with the punch sheets, but who wants to store sprue?

Shelve the game sideways and the the board tilts, then the tiles fall out, bloodpressure increases...

This game also suffers from the "crushing during packing" syndrome. Again, it's a case of the insert being great for the punched game but doesn't fit with the unpunched counter sheets.

This insert is so huge; not really sure why. It has a space for all the cards, but when you try to store cards in it they slide all over the place underneath the insert. Maybe it was mostly for packing and not storing after you've played it? (I've seen some inserts that seem to be made just to keep stuff from shaking around too much before first opening it).

This is the first game I thought of for this list. The insert is ok if all you have is the base game. Even then its not great. If you add any expansions you have to toss the insert to make enough room.

(see picture for evidence).

Flimsy cross pieces that don't stay anchored to the sides. I finally ditched them and bagged all the bits, cards, tiles, and chips. I had already replaced the chips with my own clay compsite chips, which made it heavier, and probably contributed to the demise of the cross pieces. But still.... cardboard cross pieces? Come On!

I think Nexus Ops has the same issue.

The insert has wells shaped to fit the tiles but it doesn't hold them all - some are above the top of the ridge so they just float around freely.

It's next on my "mod" list.

This looks like a nicely designed insert, but after you've put the box on end at least once, you'll find that all the cards and chits from all the different compartments will happily mix together messing everything up.

It's just easier to toss it and use bags.

This stands in for pretty much any Fantasy Flight game (except the Nexus re-releases, which tend to have pretty good inserts), where a big bit of folded cardboard takes up most of the space in the box. ToI, its expansions, TI:3... I could go on. As new, many of the game components come hidden under the cardboard insert. I've had to throw away every insert so far, barring A Game of Thrones (which has a great insert) and the Nexus releases.

The packaging process consistently crushes the insert for this game. I bought this at GenCon a couple of years ago and noticed the insert was damaged so we opened 3 - 4 copies and they were all like that.

The problem is that the insert is designed for the punched game and when the game is packed at the printer the unpunched counter sheets don't fit properly into the box. The shrink wrap machine doesn't care and pushes the lid down all the way.

The insert is properly shaped for the game, but it is made of vacuformed plastic about 3 Angstroms thick. The 36 puzzle boards are stored in a single stack, and they are very heavy. The insert will crack. It cannot be avoided.

Oh there are so, so many terrible inserts.... but the title of the list made me think of Big City, which I just played at a friend's house two nights ago.

This is an older OOP game (I'm actually hoping to get a copy of the reprint as I can't seem to find a reasonably priced orig. version). My friend still has the inserts. If this were my game, I would have scrapped them day one (which I often do).

The insert is fantastic for storing the pieces if you are a collector and never plan on playing. Each piece has an individual pocket that it 'clicks' into. It's actually a very well designed insert for shipping and storage. But it took us about 15 minutes (two of us) just to pop those pieces out of the insert to play.

Argh.

The BI version's insert was supposed to be all nice and special and stuff; it was sort of velvety/fuzzy or something, but the fuzz made it hard to get the cards out of their slots and it started to come off after a while anyway. Also, the spaces for each deck were a bit too shallow (probably because of the fuzz), so a few cards from each deck would just float around on top of everything if you tried to fit each deck into its own space. Has room for the upgrade kit's stuff and all the expansions so far after I threw the insert out.

Sadly, no good pictures of the insert are available, so here's a fine pic of some bits.
The insert has a set of interconnected wells for the rectangular "score tiles" (if you know the game, you'll know what I mean) which allow the tiles to turn sideways, or upside down, or rotate. Eventually they mix through the open connections... And of course, the card-well is too small to accept sleeved cards and holds the cards flat, so they can escape one at a time by tunnelling under the board. Why don't they design inserts so that cards are held vertically?
The tray works fine if the game is stored and transported flat, but that's the best that can be said. Grr.

To be fair, it's really more to do with the box being too small. However, if you want all the components in this game comfortably back in the box, that insert has to go.
