I've had some ideas for this list floating around in my head for a couple of years now. I've finally decided it's time to start it up and I guess I'll just see how it goes...

I think the idea for this list started about a year into my gaming groups start up. We've been going for a few years now and regularly meet in a local pub on a Thursday night. After playing with some of the guys a number of times I started to notice very subtle differences in the way they played games or acted on our games night. These differences have slowly become more obvious the longer time has gone on.

After noticing these differences I have found that there are certain gamers who fit into certain "gamer type" categories. I'm not saying everyone fits exactly into a specific slot, most of us fit into a few. What I am saying is that you can see how a lot of the people you play games with will fit into one "type" of gamer slot more than the others.

If that’s as clear as mud I hope the list below helps to clear things up a little. Feel free to post any comments you want or add to the list below.

I'm told this is where I fit best so I'll start with: - The Winner

Although the title for this gamer may sound good, be warned! This type of gamer should be watched at all times. These gamers play board games to win and, to quote myself, "Second is first Last!" While for some gamers it's the taking part that counts, to this gamer the win is everything. This type of gamer would sell his soul to the devil if it could buy him a win from a losing position!

Next we have: - The Maths Wiz

I've played games with a lot of different groups and the maths wiz appears a lot. He's the player that plays the percentages, right down to the decimal places. This type of player rarely goes with his gut and some games can really sloooow down when they're around. As the turn order moves around to them they are constantly struggling to work out the "optimum" move for the changing situation unfolding before them. They are often oblivious to a lot of the talk going on around the table and they despise luck fuelled games.

Next up is: - The Chatter Box

Again the Chatter Box appears in a lot of gaming circles and, while it's nice to have a bit of light conversation, the Chatter Box isn't in it for the chit chat. You normally find that the Chatter Box has a bit of charm and self confidence about them. They appear to have the player on turns best interest at heart. It's only afterwards that you notice that the great move they talked you into probably helped them win the game!

Then comes: - The Befuddled

I'm sure we've all slipped into this category on more than one occasion but some gamers seem to spend most of their time here. The Befuddled player is generally a nice guy but, despite all their efforts, most games just seem to pass them buy without anything clicking.

Board games are all about having fun and the Befuddled player has this in abundance. Everyone loves the underdog so you normally find that befuddled player is well liked in most groups.

Every group needs one!: - The Collector

Every gaming group should have a collector in their midst, the more the merrier! The collector is a completest when it comes to their games collection. They seem to have every game under the sun and they leave most of us wondering where they keep all of those amazing new games they keep buying. The collector isn't normally too bothered in winning a game, he's just happy he's the one that owns it!

Who could forget: - The Night out Gamer

This gamer turns up to your games night so he has an excuse to get out of the house. These gamers are normally very sociable and friendly. They are the type of gamer who just want a few hours of peace and quiet whilst sharing a laugh with friends. Win, lose or draw, they are just happy to have had a good night out. No nagging partner, no annoying kids, just a couple of beers and a few laughs!

My kids are "freestylers". Usage: "Mommy, I don't want to play Quoridor the normal way, I just want to freestyle." They are both under 8 and they came up with this term on their own.

Essentially it boils down to kids, or others, who like to just take out bits and play with them in a way that approximates boardgaming to them.

Then you have the board gamer that holds a grudge. You might have indiscriminately pounced him in a previous game, or moved the thief on his lands once or twice in Catan, but this gamer will still hold a grudge. They will let you know how upset they are by doing everything they can to target you in subsequent games - even to their own demise - just as long as you don't have any chance to win. Avoid this gamer at all costs.

Then there's the guy who almost always seems to be the traitor in any game with that mechanic. After a while of playing games with him people just assume he's going to be the traitor and start doing things to him without any proof he's really the traitor. Of course he professes his innocence and acts all persecuted... until it's later discovered that yup, he's the traitor. It doesn't help that he's also the gamer who will always be the first to stab you in the back during that game of Diplomacy.

Oh man, the weight of the world is on this player's shoulders. If his or her next move is the wrong one, then civilization as we know it will crumble. Must consider every permutation and implication. Must not hurry. Must not make a mistake.

Mercifully, the fate of the world doesn't hang on the other players' decisions. It's ok if they fall asleep or otherwise lose their focus between turns. But Atlas never shrugs.

The Rules Lawyer.

This guy / gal knows the rules. AND DON'T YOU DARE FORGET IT! If you have a question about the rules of the game, right or wrong - THIS Guy has your answer. Even when you can show him a published rulebook that proves he's wrong, he'll respond with a "Well, I'm playing by the original rules"

I will say, that a "white hat" rules lawyer is a true asset when you are learning a new game - someone who really does know the rules and can explain them when asked to the benefit of everyone. But beware the dreaded "black hat" rules lawyer - they will suck ALL the fun out of learning a new game or playing a game period.

I have one of these in my game group, he will do anything he can not to finish last even if that means helping the leader win when he is hanging on to 2nd to last.

Of course, this makes it doubly fun when he does end up last! devil

"The Kingmaker". I also have one of these. If he decides he is too far behind to win a game (even when he isn't mind), he will decide he wants the game finished and therefore will pick one of the two leaders and try and help them win. In this way, if his chosen leader wins, he sort of wins...

Although 'Anything But Last' man can be frustrating, this is the only time i've given a warning on gaming behaviour as it can be really annoying for everyone else when a game is won by a 3rd player taking no real part in the lead of the game.

The Kingmaker.

"I decide who wins and who loses!!! BASK IN MY POWAH!"

This guy doesn't come to win, he comes to make sure someone ELSE wins. In every game he plays, he looks forward to the victory of someone else - be it a friend, perhaps a significant other, or because he has a grudge on YOU. His endless dedication to the job of sycophant would be cute were he a puppy, but instead it's just irritating - for his choice of who to make king can be as mercurial as the convoluted ways he finds to do it.

And yes, I have, on RARE occasion played this role. whistle

EDIT:

The Butcher:

This guy must have some sort of deep seated hatred against game components, maybe he was kept in a cardboard box when he was a child, or his parents died in a tragic accident involving a deck of cards, perhaps his dog choked on a die. No matter when or why his crusade started, he is out to murder your games. Does the game contain cards? He'll make sure half of them are bent, the other half get nice tears. Cardboard? Half his counters will be sent on an arduous journey under the couch. Plastic figures? He'll suddenly remember (And start to live out) his childhood dream of being a material tester. The best way to enjoy soup is directly from a game board, not only does this vastly improve the flavour, it also means one less bowl to wash, the board is also a perfect ashtray. God forbid the game has any components that need to be thrown, like dice, the only way to retrieve them after the game is to have them surgically removed from organs the other players didn't even know they had.

"Please stop bending the cards" makes you sound anal, "Please stop eating your units" makes you sound mental.

The Whiner

This guy (and from what I have seen, the Whiner is almost always male) will always complain about anything and everything throughout the game. He'll curse his luck, complain when people won't accept his (ridiculous) trade deals and in player conflict games he'll moan incessantly when some-one attacks him.

Some players will re-think their moves just to shut him up (especially when he is the host or owns the game).

The Whiner might also go on to win the game and congratulate themselves on their verbal acumen.

There's chap like this in one of the groups I sometimes play with. We finally instituted a policy of everyone piling in on him (even if it was to their direct disadvantage) at the first instance of complaining. All it took as a couple of "Kill the whinger" incidents and he quick learned to cease his moaning.

"But I would have won if..."

This chap takes gaming really seriously. He is smart, skilled, and very focused on the game, that's why he tends to win his fair share of games.

The problem arises when he just doesn't win.

Even though he never forgets to congratulate the winner, with the very same breath of air, he starts listing all those small thing that would have ensured his win if they actually had happened. Inculing, but not limited to:

- one lucky/unlucky dice roll, might be a few hours before
- some player screwing with him without any realistic reason
- a bad decision which he was forced to make b/c he forgot about some trivial game mechanic which anyone with half a brain would have done without thinking (also called the "untap memory lapse desease")

In the end, you walk away from the table with the uneasy feeling as if you had won by cheating.

This is the "player" who spends far too much time on www.boardgamegeek.com

He knows all the rankings from Agricola to Game of Life.

He'll tell you what the best games are for under 90 minutes for 4 players who don't want too much confrontation.

He knows all the BGG standard jokes such as Busen Memo appearing on every humourous Geeklist.

But you'll hardly ever catch him actually playing a game because he's always on BGG making another entry to someone elses Geeklist.

He's a nice enough guy, he's affable, he's brought snacks but so help me, he cannot pay attention to the game to save his life or our time at the table.

A recent Power Grid example:

"What's going on?"
It's your turn, the bid's 17.
"Hunh?"
We're bidding on power plants and the bid's at 17.
"Oh! I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention... uh... 18."
[The bid goes around the table and goes up to 20]
It's your turn again.
"What?"
The bid?
"Oh I'm sorry! I wasn't... what's going on?"

The Anarchist.

He may be trying to win, or intentionally keep everyone else off-kilter, but that takes a backseat to his love of explosions and general mayhem. Note that this is different from a newbie making random moves/attacks.

In some games his tendancies can be taken advantage of. One of my regular opponents ALWAYS takes the Warlord when we play Citadels; the foreknowledge balances out the annoyance of buildings blowing up every round.

And then there's the gamer type like myself, the "What if... ?" or the "Let's pretend... "

For players like this, board games are primarily a means to socially and interactively experience, in some small way, what it's like to be a railroad planner/builder, or a group of settlers on an island, or an overseer of the building of a great cathedral, or a captain of a pirate ship, or a general in a battle, or a squad leader in a firefight. Furthermore, this type of player can get involved on a decision-making level, and try out different approaches and/or scenarios, in famous or otherwise historically noteworthy situations, even though it's only "what if... ?" and "let's pretend... ".

For this type of player, a game's theme and presentation are first and foremost, though the game mechanics and the gameplay itself are still very important. And for this type of player, winning the game isn't so much important as is experiencing the game.
