I like international football (soccer to you Americans out there), so I thought why not make a national team/theme list composed of my favourite German game designers?

It was hard to choose the play system for my German eleven. The German national football team used 4-3-3 during the 1970s, was very successful with 3-5-2 in the 1990s, and are now more leaning towards the classic 4-4-2. I'll go for 4-3-3 in this list for inclination towards the 'total football' of the 1970s, but use two defensive midfielders (you never know).

The positions of the designers are somewhat arbitrary, as I don't know any of them in person and their position is based upon their body of work as I know it, i.e. their games. I've chosen only to include designers that I own at least one game of. Didn't add any substitutes, I'll let someone else do that. Or not? I think I'm at least missing Uwe Rosenberg, Friedemann Friese, Stefan Feld and Dirk Henn but I don't have any games by them. Yet.

Is there French, Italian, American or British elevens to fantasy-play against? I think this team is pretty tough to beat.

#1 Goal keeper.

Mr Seyfarth seems like an reliable and experienced goalie, can extend his reach upwards (Manhattan) as well as time his entry into the target area (Puerto Rico). And they say that a goalie's best friends are the posts (Thurn and Taxis).

Games owned: Puerto Rico, Manhattan

#2 Right-back.

The back of the team has to work well together, I'm keen on stability and familiarity among the defenders. A wing defender has to be in control of his area (El Grande), to generate work points (The Princes of Florence) to stop the opposing forwards/midfielders and deliver the ball (Merchants of the Middle Ages) over the side line if so required.

Games owned: El Grande (to be ordered...)

#5 Centre back.

In the back defense, you need a nestor, someone calm, experienced and authorative. You have to take control your region with majestic presence (El Grande), never losing your mask (Tikal) in face of the opposition, and you'll have to play your cards right (6 nimmt!) when attempting to interrupt the ball not risking a penalty kick.

Games owned: Hacienda, 6 nimmt!, Origo, Bison: Thunder on the Prairie

#6 Centre back.

I need a pair of central defenders in sync, and why not someone who can work immaculately with Mr Kramer? One (or both) of the central defenders often have a towering presence (Torres), a ferocious berserk aggresiveness (Vikings) and an ability to really dig in (Cavum) when the opposition start pouring at you.

#3 Left-back.

Mr Delonge passed away in 2007 but I'd still like to have him as one of my defenders. As a defender, you'll have to ship the goods/ball (Container) to the midfield, sometime you'll have to move as a freight train (TransAmerica) to support the attack from the back. And when victory is at hand, how should a German celebrate (Goldbräu)?

#4 Defensive midfielder, right.

A midfielder with defensive capabilities has to manage his resources accordingly (Goa), as well as coordinate his actions with his fellow players (Genoa) and seal (Arkadia) off the midfield for the opposition.

#8 Defensive midfielder, left.

The second defensive midfielder has to take responsibility for also controlling the field (Kreta), to play each hand dealt to him (Turn the Tide) without getting sold out (For Sale) by the lightening speed passes around him.

#10. Offensive midfielder.

Every team needs a playmaker, a no 10, with versatility and creativity. Who better than Dr. Knizia? The offensive midfielder is the connection (Taj Mahal) between the offense and defense, decides whether to cut his passes across to the forwards at the flags (Battle Line) or influnce the game by utilising his present position (Samurai).

#7 Right wing forward.

Mr Schacht has proven his attacking skills. A wing forward has often a certain movement pattern (Hansa), often utilising the same gap twice (Web of Power-China) if given the chance, and can show a certain flair and colourfulness (Zooloretto).

#9 Centre forward.

This is a position for an avid scorer, who has a proven record for finding the net time after time (Carcassonne-Carcassonne: Expansion 1 – Inns & Cathedrals etc.), but at the same time not putting all balls in the same gap (The Downfall of Pompeii). Can often be quite superstitious (Mesopotamia) if the stars don't align.

#11 Left wing forward.

My final addition to the Euro-eleven is a heavy hitter. A forward that's expert in exploring the great unknowns (Entdecker) on his side of the field, expanding his domain (Domaine) through his efforts to make inroads to the center and score (Catan).
