What of experiences (yours or others) have you had with games that you ended up quitting part way through a session? I'm gonna guess that the most common reason is "simply not enough time to finish it" will be the most common answer, but as always, curious to hear what else is out there.

Truly, this is one game everyone should try at least once. Well, sorta. I will fill everyone in and say I share the common view here on BGG about SoC. It has a special place in many's hearts as the way they started off, but you then eventually just want to move on. I don't mind playing this game again, but I will never voluntarily put this game on the table (figuratively).

One of my groups that does mostly parlor/lighter gaming. One person just quit. Gave all of his played soldier cards to another player to give that other player the win. Can't say I'm surprised, as it's the same cons that plague other groups. Not getting anything for awhile and games that run longer than most people's tolerences are to blame. However, most people at least sit through the entire game, but given this group prefers games that are less than an hour (yeah, to them, #1 Quelf above doesn't count as 2-hour game), that would explain that.

Still the same group as #1 above. Surprisingly, someone else picked this game. Great! That's a start, but probably won't be enough. A couple of folks have expressed disdain for co-op games of all sorts. Apparently, their mentality is there's no point to them since everyone just wins Anyways.... after a brief explanation against that, we started. Looking back, my mistake was NOT toning it down. I like explaning rules, but my fellow gamers, friends, and even family are right about one thing. I tend to over-explain things (with the latter 2, not so with board games but life in general). Lesson learned there.

They are more of a "dice whore" then I thought. For most crisis cards, they would roll the d8. Even for those that didn't have the option to roll the die. Those that did, they took it. Pitching in cards was just simply not their cup of tea.

After a distance of 2, after just 1 jump, I noticed people were bored. Out of courtesy I inquired about the state of the game and they preferred to stop right there. In the end, one thing that wasn't enjoyable was after the first jump, there was nothing on the board. No ships, since the ships in the beginning are there as part of setup rules.

In the end though, I was fairly certain they just don't like this type of game. They mentioned they probably would like it if they watched the new TV series, but I would doubt that as well. I've played with people who've seen the TV series and say they just don't like the game. I've played with those who haven't seen the TV series and say they enjoyed it, but I'm also certain this set of players would enjoy co-ops anyways.

EDIT: corrected wrong geeklist references

Different group here (We will not be discussing the group in the first 2 entries anymore).

The 6 of us agreed to play a total of 3 rounds (you score at the end of each round just to define what a "round" is). I had enough luck that at the end of round 2, I was 17pts ahead of the player in 2nd place, which meant there was no way for anyone to catch up to me even if I scored nothing and the 2nd place person scored the maximum 16pts per round. I wouldn't have minded playing on just to see how everyone else would've placed, even if I were in any of their positions, but everyone else just decided to declare me the winner and move on to another game.

In a series of 2p games, one game could've gone differently if I just draw one dang brown/wood card. THAT would've let me finish the Palisade, which would've prevented the my opponent from taking all my clients via the Colisiem. It took him long enough to get matching colors for my clients, but in the end, they all went into his vault. We both agreed to just mercifully start a new game. Going on would have been cruel.

Similar to Rack-O above, but Category 5 works for situations where more than 4 players are waiting for others to show up. Otherwise, this is sometimes used to finish the evening. We don't count score and nor play to 74pts. When it's time, we adjorn till next time.

If you don't have a full 4 hours to devote to a 5p game of mostly newbies, you run the risk of getting kicked out before the game finishes, which is exactly what happened. At the "15 minutes left" mark, they had to skip the last round and scoring to put away the game.

I'm typically willing to try any game at least once all the way through. This was no exception. To others save for the game owner in a 4p game, after one of 3 rounds, they wanted to call it quits. A shame too, as I would've liked to see how it all came together in the end. Owning but not having played Ticket To Ride: The Card Game yet, I'd imagine this game might be like that. However, I could see why the others swung that way. It took 14 minutes to explain the rules and 48 minutes to finish the first round. I'm sure subsequent rounds would go quicker, especially since these guys are considered heavy gamers, but I suppose other stuff going on just had more appeal.

While not precisely quitting, we had an interesting game of this a couple months ago. It was me, a friend, and my cousin playing a three player game of this. Our fourth guy showed up, and we were still pretty low in the foreign colonies, and figured it'd be another 30-60 minutes.

Sure, he probably would have been fine playing some solo Race for the Galaxy, but my friend and I ended up laying down some negotiates. Since we wanted to include everyone and get a game going, we broke the rules and traded 3 colonies for 4 colonies to end the game immediately with a false shared victory.

At the time we didn't even know it was against the rules, that there was a strict limit of one colony that can be traded. It was hilarious though, watching my cousin's face as he lost with only 1 foreign colony, to each of our 5!

All I can say is never, ever play this game with someone who suffers from analysis paralysis. At the first scoring round of my first game, we waited for 10 minutes while one player looked for the single best move prior to scoring. I think we'd still be waiting if I hadn't gotten tired of waiting and told him the moves I'd come up with shortly after his turn began. When the same thing happened during the second scoring round, the rest of us agreed to quit.

Solo game. I quit partway through my first and only game (so far) because I found myself doing the same things over and over and over. The game was taking up valuable table space, and I couldn't bring myself to see it through to the end, so I just put it away.

On the bright side:

1. My wife caught a glimpse of it before I packed it up, and she said, "What's that game you have set up? It looks interesting." So, maybe I'll introduce it to her someday.

2. I've yet to try Mr. Skeletor's solitaire variant, which comes highly recommended around these parts.

Solo game. Fed up.

Playing a scenario where I need such-and-such tonnage and so-and-so ships sunk by the end of X months.

X - 3 months in, with only one ship sunk and only a twentieth of the tonnage I needed to scrape any sort of a win in, I scrapped the game.

Maybe next time I'll play with an eight-sided die instead of a ten-sider. shake

This is why I NEVER play this game until all players are comfortable with the base game.

My roommate wanted to play this game with me, his girlfriend, and her friend. The two girls had never played before, but he only plays Cities and Knights, and never plays the base game, and he didn't want to now. So the girls were left confused and frustrated, not knowing what they were supposed to do.

If that wasn't bad enough, My roommate and his girlfriend decided to leave in the middle. After they were gone for a long time, we started to wonder if they were coming back....

If you are going to quit in the middle of the game, this is NOT the way to do it... shake

My gaming group has brought this to the table three times in the past year or so. Every single time, we've ended early (at least a lap before the end). Bolide, at least for us, winds up the way most GP races wind up in real-life nowadays. There's a runaway leader early on and no plausible way to catch up. A good player will keep the car on the track, not make any mistakes, and maintain his lead, so we've always packed up early, realizing that there was no way to catch the leader at the midway mark.

Sad really, I really like the game. I've read several altered rules that put simultaneous movement into play to add more "risk" into the gameplay. Also speeds up the play I guess. But without the perils of the leader doing something stupid, the leader after the first lap is going to be the leader after the 2nd lap.

It was getting late, but the main reason we agreed to wrap it up is because no one was really having fun with it. It was just dry and boring, and everyone was going through the motions until someone finally suggested that we put it away.

I'll give it another shot. I'm fully convinced that with the right crowd, and a little earlier start, we could have fun with this one.
