I grew up with 4 siblings, and although there were always games like Monopoly and Yahtzee in the house, my brother and sisters mostly did not like games. I saw other kids who actually would play games with me far too rarely since I grew up on a farm.

As I grew older my love for games did not die but grew, too. Back in the 80's I started collecting games. These included the older ones I grew up with like Monopoly, Sorry, and Risk as well as many 'new' ones like Power Barons, Axis & Allies, Samurai Swords (then Shogun), and even Scotland Yard. I even found those who at times played with me, including my new wife.

This trend continued and my collection grew to about 50 games and then gradually it tapered off as relations nearly broke with a couple we regularly played with (due to their divorce) and our kids were multiplying which placed many demands on us. I think Clue Master Detective was one of the last games that saw a lot of play during this era.

I did take time to teach my 4 daughters to play games, however, and there was always still a trickle of game play and new game purchases during the next 15 years or so. Uno was highly popular in my house at the beginning of this stretch, but I also played games like Stratego, Inside Moves (Chivalry) and even Samurai Swords with my girls.

Then, in the fall of 2004, I thought, "I haven't bought a new game in years and now that I am finally on the internet why not see if there is anything new that looks good out there." I got on Google and, WHOOOAAAAH!! I wasn't prepared for what I found! Hundreds, even thousands of games I had never heard of! German games! What the heck? And immediately, there was BoardGameGeek. Well, I was no geek, I can tell you. I was just a normal guy. But, wow, this site was pretty cool and certainly informative if you wanted to find out about games
That first year I bought Settlers, Carcassonne, Alhambra and Tongiaki after much research, reviewing and even through reading Geek Lists.

After I found out how awesome these first 4 games were, I was hooked (again,...or still?) and got some of my family members and friends interested as well. BGG became a muchly frequented site. The next Christmas (2005) my purchased games included Ticket to Ride, Pirate's Cove, Domaine, China, Bang (& Dodge City), Puerto Rico, Carcassonne add-ons, Lost Cities, Entdecker, and more.

This trend of extensive research primarily using BGG and sites like http://www.thedicetower.com/thedicetower/index.php , http://www.rpg.net/reviews/ , and reviews at http://www.funagain.com/control/main was repeated in 2006 resulting in the purchase of games like El Grande, Torres, Reef Encounter, LOTR, Tikal, Cartagena, Top Secret Spies, Through the Desert, Hansa, Clans and Citadels.

However, in late summer as I began my research for games on BGG as usual I decided it was time to actually join. At that time I still mostly used this site to read reviews, see the, by this time, 'famous' BGG ranking and ratings, and to view pictures of games. We still only had dial-up internet at that time so I didn't do as much as I wanted and little more than necessary.

Sure, I had a user name here now, but with dial-up internet I still did not utilize the site as much as I might have liked and made no contributions so I had no avatar. Therefore, 2008 saw my same typical research and purchase method. For me, it was all about games and BoardGameGeek was simply a tool to that end, albeit a very important one. Once again BGG saw me through to the purchase of games like Pillars of the Earth, Hey! That's My Fish!, and many, many more.

Then, in the beginning of 2009 we got high speed internet! I subsequently found myself on BoardGameGeek quite a lot and finally realized how much fun there was to be had here as well as the all important game research. In February I started contributing with the hope in mind of getting my own avatar. My first ever contribution was this picture of my hobbits from LOTR uploaded Feb. 23, 2009.

Up until this point I had kept track of all my plays and had made numerous lists, records and data with pen and journal. I decided to transfer my game plays since 2004 and even added some of my lists like "Best Bang for The Buck," a list I had made in my journal in 2007 and have updated there 4 times since, and "Most Played Games." I plan to re-post the first and maybe both of these lists periodically as the data changes.

This brings me to the true purpose of this list. While I have made entries, interacted with some of you and have read other's entries, I am repeatedly overwhelmed by one thing! Like I stated at the beginning of this list I have always kind of felt that I am a minority in my love for and pursuit of board games even within my own home. But here, here at BoardgameGeek, I am surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of others of all ages and walks of life, of all nationalities, who I totally can relate to in this one area of my life and who, in return, can actually relate to me. I don't know how many times I have read a comment made by someone here that causes me to laugh or hoot out loud because, here is yet another who takes the words right out of my mouth or in some way voices something that I know exactly what you mean. Though I have never met you, there is true kinship.

So I say, thank you BoardGameGeek. I am happy to be a part of this wonderful community and not be an alien for liking games!
