Some geeks have been playing Euros since before the term existed, but I suspect that many of us have stumbled upon the hobby (a friend's copy of Catan or Carcassonne, maybe?)

Then, we were hooked and started trying to build our collections. If you remember (or like me you log into your favorite game store's website and look at your order history), what was your first big game order? Looking back, what do you think of those games now?

The idea for this list came from this thread and my post in it.

The first three games I ordered appear to be:
Evo,
Ticket to Ride, and
San Juan
on Sunday 14 November, 2004.

I don't know if that counts as a "big" order, but I am going with it. Looking back these are all games that saw lots of play. When we were dating, my wife and I played lots of San Juan due in part to its portability. Ticket to Ride saw lots of play due to its simplicity (and still does whenever we have families with younger kids over.) Evo saw its fair share of games as well.

Still, the more games I have played, the more my tastes have been refined to the point that I would be happy to never play any of them again. (I even traded Evo away). As simple and random as a game like Ticket to Ride is, it was to me so much more what I was looking for than games that I had tried previously (Trump, anyone?). I could make decisions and have a strategy even if it was a simple one.

But, BGG and BGGCON have now exposed me to so many games, that I have no interest in these any more. I would be perfectly happy going forward to play a selection of 18xx, AOS, and Winsome's catalog.

My first big order almost contained Ticket to Ride, but I removed it from the order at the last minute and bought it at a game store in the twin cities instead. Here's the rest:

Pandemic
Last Night on Earth
Carcassonne + Inns & Cathedrals
Through The Desert
San Juan
Monkeys on the Moon
Ticket to Ride: USA 1910 Expansion

At the time it was a pretty big deal trying to get the perfect combination of games, kind of funny thinking about it now. I probably drove the people at Thought Hammer crazy adding and removing games several times, they never complained though.

(I enjoyed telling my wife that I was ordering some board games that covered zombies, trains, camels, lunar monkeys, virus outbreaks and...a city in France?)

This was my first order I placed after having played a few 'designer' board games:

Fury of Dracula - Interesting but too long and horrible combat system
Ingenious - Excellent but not played often
War Of The Ring - Good but long and fiddly
Warrior Knights - Thought it would be right up my alley but totally wasn't
Puerto Rico Expansion - Great for the cost

I was at this point an FFG fan but now I realize I prefer Euro's which are usually from RGG.
