Inspired by the "Puffing Billy" Tournaments organized by the TGA, I'll be running the RinCon Shootout, a roundup of Western-themed board games at this year's RinCon, October 9-11 in Tucson, AZ. The event will start at High Noon on Saturday, October 10.

Players will score points in the initial round of six games for four players based on their placement in each game: 1st - 5 points, 2nd - 3 points, 3rd - 2 points, 4th - 1 point. In the event of a tie between players in a particular game, the points for the places tied will be totaled and split evenly (rounding down) between the players who are tied.

At the end of the initial round, the eight highest scoring players will continue on to the Final Showdown, with ties for the finalists making the cut to be broken in true Old West fashion by high card draw from a standard deck of playing cards.

Finalists will play three eight player games again scoring based on placement: 1st - 8 points, 2nd - 5 points, 3rd - 3 points, 4th - 2 points, 5th or 6th - 1 point, 7th or 8th - 0 points. These scores will be added to the players' scores from the initial round to determine overall place in the tournament. Ties will be broken by points scored in the initial round and then - if still tied - by high card draw.

Here are the games we'll be playing:

A gold-rush themed auction card game with a clever balancing mechanism - the winning bidder gets first choice of the mines and special event cards up for auction with selection proceeding to his left, while his winning bid is passed to the right with each player taking half what remains.

This game will be played in the initial round.

A quick trick-taking game with a lot going on. Poker hands do come into the scoring, but despite the title, the mechanics are not really like poker.

This game will be played in the initial round.

A boisterous press-your-luck game using poker dice which is not as random as it might appear.

This game will be played in the initial round.

A lighter worker-placement game themed around settling the Oregon Territory in the Old West. And you can't beat meeples with ten gallon hats for giving a game that Old West feel.

This game will be played in the initial round.

The best of the Mystery Rummy series casts players as deputy marshals assisting the famed lawman of the game's title in catching outlaws. A favorite of the local board-gaming club, the RTEAM Gamers.

This game will be played in the initial round.

The ultimate Spaghetti Western shootout game. This game will be played in the final round. Placement will be based first on whether or not a player was on the winning side (lawmen, outlaws or renegades) and then by order of elimination. Expect a prepared stack of "High Noon" and "Fistful of Cards" cards to be used to add tension, excitement and a time constraint to this game.

An adaptation of Indian Poker, the cards in this game are shaped like feathers with a headband for each player so they don't have to hold them to their foreheads.

Since this game features player-elimination, it will be the last game of the final round.
