A short while ago, I posted a geeklist about game nostalgia.

Today I received my recently purchased copy of Great Medieval Battles. To my delight it is in fact 75% unpunched. Only the Tamburlaine the Great scenario is punched, along with the informational counters.

As I was checking out my newly acquired treasure, I noted the copyright - 1979; 30 years ago! Where has the time gone.

So, as I'm enjoying my little bout of nostalgia from my early gaming days, here's a list of games I used to play, all originally published in 1979.

Any other reminiscences?

Two of the scenarios, arguably the best ones in the quad, were re-released in S&T #197 Great Medieval Battles Bannockburn and Angora.

I can't remember how many times I've played these scenarios, although it's been over 25 years since I last did.

I played this a fair bit back in junior high. I remember always wanting the black forces because of the colossus.

I'd love to get a copy, but only for nostalgia.

Originally from Battleline games, but popularized by Avalon Hill.

I sold my copy on eBay long ago, but it was a very fine game for its day. We had lots of fun in junior high channeling the scenes from Ben Hur.

My first introduction to this game was in university, where we quickly dubbed this game "star fleet lawyers".

Our favorite way to play was get a large group and play "Circle of Death".

Avalon Hill's monster D-Day game. I almost got to play this once, but the owner of the game wanted to set it up before we played it and never got around to it.

I wonder if this one will remain a grail game once GMT's The Battle for Normandy is released?

Part of the Europa Series.

I never played any of the games in this series, but I distinctly remember looking longingly at the series back in high school and planning how I would one day own and play the series.

Never happened.

Who didn't love those schlocky Japanese monster movies? We played this game a lot, but it hasn't stood the test of time. I last played it about a decade ago when I tried what turns out to be a nigh unbeatable strategy for the monster vs. the humans.

This was a fun game, except the one time I let Robin Hood be killed in the second or third turn which effectively ended the game. Oops.

My friends and I were Squad Leader fanatics and eagerly read every word about the game that appeared in The General. So when this game came out, we were lined up at the toy store in the mall (remember when you could buy wargames at toy stores) waiting for this one.

I can distinctly remember how excited I was to see board 5 for the first time, but also how disappointed I was to find out that my American armor was now obsolete! It was the beginning of my love-hate relationship with the Squad Leader expansions that was to end with my total disgust of the system when it morphed into ASL.

Still, Cross of Iron brought me many hours of gaming fun. I played every scenario several times, and to me, it was the height of the Squad Leader system.

The first in Yaquinto's tactical WWII trilogy of games. Basically, these are miniatures rules ported to boardgames, with blank boards and separate hill and woods tiles. The latest incarnation has come full circle back to a miniatures game: Panzer Miniatures

This is a guilty pleasure of a game. It isn't a terribly good game. The rules were a mess, in fact Yaquinto published a revised edition of the rules in 1980. Still, they left out some info in the revised rules, for example, how to distribute the secret victory point charts to each player. Do you deal them, do players pick?

So why is this nostalgic. It's nostalgic because I used to own this game, sold it, then in a fit of nostalgia, I bought a copy (with the revised rules) last year. shake

I still say I'm going to get around to doing a re-design on this one. Play it a lot back in the 80's. Love the map, although of course it seems kind of primitive today.

I've always enjoyed this game, though I can't seem to get it back into circulation, with quicker, more visually-appealing games taking the forefront.

I've always enjoyed games where the map is created before you as you play, much like the Empire Builder series of games.

Rather than overburdening the system with a monster game (I'm looking at you, Operation Typhoon!), SPI brought the popular Panzergruppe Guderian system back down to size with this great, little wargame of Army Group North's assault on the Baltic port. Even today, it still plays well.

Oooh! The complexity!

I remember eagerly waiting for the updated Airwar '80 to come out. Modern air combat with individual aircraft. Of course, nowadays one would "play" a game like this on the computer as a first person shooter in real time, but there was something about Air War that appealed. The "realism". The complexity.
