The BGG top 100 is a really good list for finding the agreed-upon creme de la creme of our hobby. I constantly refer to it, as it's a quick way to find the games that others hold in the highest esteem.

But what about the games outside the BGG top 100?

We all have our true favorite games. For some of us, some of those long-time favorites simply fall outside the top 100. Maybe it's because it's a niche game. Maybe it just doesn't appeal to everyone. Or maybe it's because it never got the huge exposure that some other games have received.

So, let's hear it. What game do you think is absolutely fantastic? What game outside the BGG top 100 do you really think should be there - and probably near the top? What gem are other clueless people simply missing out on? Let us know, and why!

I'll start off the festivities...

This is a brilliant game that requires tons of forethought and strategic planning and results in vastly different game conditions every time you play, plus it's got a very different flavor with different numbers of players. It won the 2000 SdJ and the 2000 Games 100. We play this one all the time and enjoy it quite a bit more than many of the games high on the BGG 100.

The definitive two player experience. Unique, elegant and about a zillion other superlative adjectives apply.

Each player has the same objective, but totally different ways to fulfill them.
The theme oozes from the cards and the mechanics are sublime.

Simply put, you can't find a finer example of a card game.

In my opinion, the best light filler game. It's such a tight little game, with enough math to make things interesting, only the barest touch of randomness, and a heck of a lot of social player reading. Simple to teach, surprisingly deep, and interesting decisions in a 10-15 minutes game. What more could you ask for?

With the right marketing and production, I think this could have easily been a top 50 game. Too bad it is currently OOP with no indication when it will be available again.

I know it's just outside the Top 100, but dammit, it should be in there! I consider this one a clear candidate for top ten myself. It has an innovative system that's easy to understand, and offers limitless replayability. On top of that it's amazingly fun!

Why is this game not in the BGG top 100?!

As often as this game gets recommended, you'd think it'd be a shoo-in for the top hundred. Consider: it's a gateway game, a social game, it's great for larger groups, and as a card game, it's highly portable. I'd say that its rank shows clear discrimination against Uwe Rosenberg, except for...umm...his two games in the top ten...

At 111 it may still get there but I think this 'abstract in nature' game with a Sci-Fi theme is a cracker.

Of course it is likely those 2 characteristics I mentioned, coupled with the fact that the Publisher is lesser known, that has this outside the top 100.

I also think Kingsburg is roughly treated at around 130'ish.

But I concur with others. Anything inside the top 500 is only marginally better or worse than other titles. It comes down to personal taste, theme and what your gaming group makes of it.

Because it is difficult to learn and play well.

Often who begin to play this game loose interest quickly.

It would be better to have a friend who love this game or someone who push you studing it when you're young to really catch the beauty of this masterpiece.

Falling just outside the top 100, I find VS to be a really excellent game that I rate a solid 10. It's my favorite auction-style game, and it's consistently getting thumbsup when I introduce it to new players.

This game is a "10" for me, I have it down as #3 on my all-time top games list. It has a small but loyal group of followers, and the game always draws a large crowd at conventions like WBC and PrezCon. There have been recent rumblings that the game designers are seriously weighing coming out with a new edition, as the game is largely OOP although you can find a few second-hand copies at auctions or on e-bay from time to time.

One of my current favourites: assymetrical, tactical, cat-and-mouse, balance between abstract and theme. Great fun in less than hour! It will be fun to follow Daniel Val's future designs! thumbsup

A boatload of dice, a bunch of camels, wooden gold coins, bunches of little colored wood cubes, action cards, souks, and caravans - what's not to like! The game uses its theme well and the game components are fun with a lot of visual and tactile appeal. It's a fun tactical game that's accessible for all, and the gameplay is fast with little downtime. You have to herd and develop your resources to get those victory points, and face the problem of choosing which of the many options to take during your turn. As long as players don't agonize and take forever to make their choice of what to do, this is a totally fun game. The game does involve luck, but not as much as you'd think.

My family totally loves this game, so it gets played a lot. And it has stood the test of time and novelty - we've been playing it regularly every since it first came out in 2006.

Comparing it to the more recent and musch more highly ranked Stone Age, another game that uses a boatload of dice, we find Yspahan to have much more interesteing decision points and it feels less repetitive. We enjoyed Stone Age a lot at first, but tired of it quickly...

Yspahan currently ranks at 112, but I think it oughta be higher, and would be, I think, if all those who enjoy Stone Age gave it a try...

I've never understood why A Castle for All Seasons is ranked so low, and why The Pillars of the Earth is ranked so high - I would definitely swap their palces in the rankings!

I had really really wanted to like The Pillars of the Earth, epecially with its hype as a lihter weight Caylus-like game, and I love Caylus! But The Pillars of the Earth felt dry, boring, and very very repetitive with no sense of progression for me.

Then I found A Castle for All Seasons, which is what The Pillars of the Earth should have been in my view - a fast playing worker placement game with the sense of building something. I feel a strong sense of game progression, with a definite beginning, middle, and end. Great tactical game with good decision points that can really shape how the game unfolds.

This is my #2 choice, right after Glory to Rome. I don't get it with this game. I put off buying it for a year due to the comments and reviews I had read about the game just not "coming together" or something. I think it's a fantastic gamer's game that is much more interesting and clever than El Grande. That's not a knock on El Grande, just how much more I enjoy this game. I feel like I can plan my moves here much better.

I love the way interaction is encouraged by the way scoring happens. Rather than people camping out in areas, the board becomes this rolling wave of area majority positioning. The action is tense on every move as action cards start to disappear. You need to pick your remaining options very carefully. And I think the way the action cards are colored and have an effect on the next turn is brilliant. I'm surprised we don't see more of that.

Between the action cards, the special powers, and the election of the emperor, this thing has my wheels spinning in a beautiful brain burning kind of way. This is my dry, thinky, area majority gamer's game of choice.
