Everyone else seems to be at it. The point is not so much to share my thoughts with anyone else, but to collate data and share it with *me*. Because listing it here is probably the easiest way to keep it in one place and update it as time passes. Once it's all over I might publish this list and use it to make comments on the games that I actually bought, played or rejected.

I've not listed many Italian games (as they tend to be rubbish), games I already have, or two-player games (as Jan tends not to play them, so I have more than enough already).

By no means everything on the list will get bought - what with the time available, the space on my shelves and the lousy exchange rate, I don't want to buy more than about ten games - and ideally no more than 5 games and 5 expansions. If I pick well, that'll last me 'til next year anyway.

With "At The Gates Of Loyang", "Dominion:Seaside" and "Tobago", there are three games on the list that will almost certainly get bought, leaving very few slots for other stuff!

It's worth my regular readers staying up to date with this list - there is at least one item that has been added, and other items will be updated from time to time right up until the off.

Finally, if you are expecting me to bring stuff back for you, try and make the stuff you ask for things that won't be obtainable back in the UK. The £/€ exchange rate is pretty lousy, so I'm not expecting Rio Grande stuff to be more than a pound or so cheaper in Essen than it would be in the UK shops. Hence there is little point in my spending the limited amount of Euros I have on stuff that you could pick up in a couple of weeks' time anyway. Power Grid cards - definitely an Essen pickup; Power Grid maps, when Rio Grande have announced that they are doing them - not an Essen pickup. And probably not even for myself, TBH.

I'm taking *very little* cash with me - basically enough for my own food, a few games, and some of the small expansions. I don't have enough Euros to buy everyone two or three "headline" games (because that could be €100 each). Anyone who wants me to spend more than about 30 Euros for them must understand that I'll need to hit a cashpoint for that sort of spending, and they might not like the cashpoint exchange rate - ESPECIALLY if Phil at Spirit is going to get the games in stock just a couple of weeks later.

Now at Spiele and am starting to update my list with thoughts on games as I play them.

Now it's Friday night - and the last day of total “freedom” for me; Saturday is a work day, which this year will be spent demonstrating Last Train to Wensleydale. Chris Dearlove has the job of presenting God's Playground, which looks both too heavy and too long for me to ever play (like After the Flood, which remains in shrink). Far fewer games were played today, as there was no one stand where we could sit and play two or three games on the trot, and I also had to do some running around.

Now it's Saturday evening; I played only Last Train at the show today (I love it; clearly better than the previous Treefrog railway game, Steel Driver, and I think that it's better than Tinners Trail and Automobile. The setup can be a bit fiddly unless all the players help, and I'm not a huge fan of moving markers up and down tracks, but the actual substance of the game is great. Best Treefrog game so far IMO, and I've been thinking that since I first saw Wensleydale at Easter). After the show I was reunited with my jacket that I left at a restaurant last night, and the second Treefrog T-shirt that I'd misplaced. Still, at least it was only outer garments that I was losing; we found a pair of underpants in the hotel's breakfast room earlier tonight, and given that he has form for this sort of thing, the chief suspect for ownership of this pair is Wallace himself.

Played only Nostra City tonight. Last day at the show tomorrow, still have more games to check out than I have time to do, must buy something for my two children, and the Euros are diminishing fast. On the other hand, so far I really have only bought 5 games. For myself, at least; I refuse to count the stuff I cart home for other people. And I'm not counting stuff like Power Grid maps or Small World Expansions. I'm also cheating a bit by not counting games that - for one reason or another - I've been given gratis. So if I buy only one more game - which is about all that I ought to buy, given the number of Euros that I have left - means that I will hit my self-imposed limit of just six full-sized games (though the accountancy to justify that total number has been somewhat creative).

All over. I spent £500 - about a third of that on food, and £100 of it was spent on games for other people. Bought exactly 6 full-sized games for myself (and number 6 - Chinatown, bought for ten Euros, was probably a mistake).

A late addition to this list; catches my eye with the "co-operative *or* adversarial" tag.

Z-man hope to have English copies available, at the same price as Lookout. Might be best to grab it Weds though.

Other Agricola stuff:
Designer Player's boards
Resourceeples
CZ-Deck (DE only)
small linen bags for resources
old and new L-Deck cards
Agricola jigsaw puzzles (5 different ones, 27-51 pieces)
Agricola Schwarzer Peter
Agricola Quartett
Agricola Busen Memo

I bought it. Plus some of the Agricola card games for Peter. How I will get everything to fit in my Agricola box now I don't know. Hopefully I won't have to make another one!

Publisher and designer have track record, but are usually misses for me.

Played on Thursday at the RGG booth. Definitely a big miss for me. It felt like so many other workmanlike Euros - nothing particularly wrong with it, but nothing right with it either. Very reminiscent of previous Ystari offerings, like Ysphahan and Amyitis. I have no idea what it's true rating should be, but as it clearly wasn't an 8/10 or better, we packed up partway through.

Follow-up to Agricola and Le Havre, as close to a "must buy" as I get.

Played it Weds evening. It's definitely the weakest of Uwe's harvest trilogy. It's pretty, well-laid out and wonderfully clear - but I wonder if the fun or excitement is enough to sustain though a longish game of moving vegetables on and off cards.

Not that fussed by either the slightly incestuous/cliquey theme, or the reported mechanics.

Played it Wednesday evening. Definitely not my cup of tea - there are other "roll dice and allocate them" games I prefer. The artwork seems to appeal to most, but I found it somewhat cluttered. Will not be buying a copy, even though Richard is a thoroughly nice guy.

Played Friday morning. I rather liked this one. A cowboy game that felt right, with both gunfights and property management as the eponymous city grows from it's embryonic start. A word to the wise – there are two ways to play, the first with dice rols deciding gunfights, and the second using tiles allocated at the start of the game. The second method is recommended for anyone who wants a tactical game, leaving the former to fans of “Gallic chaos”. People who had passed on reservations about the game had played the chaotic version.

How does it play? Well, sort of like Caylus, with an action track to which workers (“cowboys”) are allocated, and a property board where players use their cowboys to stake claims, erect buildings, and attempt bank heists. I liked it quite a bit – enough to buy it - but where it really belongs in the scale between 7/10 anonymity and 8/10 greatness in my collection is as-yet unknown.

The video preview on the new Queen website doesn't fill me full of confidence - it looks like a meld of various mechanics that have been seen many times before. Of course, it *might* turn out to be greater than the sum of its (disparate-looking) parts.

Played Friday afternoon. how right I was. The good news is that it's another big Queen box that I don't feel the slightest need to own, so playing it instead of buying it was clearly the right thing to do. It felt overly mechanical and processional – a trait not uncommon with some of Dirk Henn's other second-string games (Timbuctu was similar IIRC). Finally, any fun that there might have been in the game (and it's a stretch to find any) was, for me, killed by an odd rule that threw up a hugely inconvenient issue regarding the need to remember what had been done at the craftsmen's spaces the turn previously. I felt that the game was the sort churned out in a workmanlike fashion, with no soul, spark or interest.

It hasn't, and it probably won't. Bought a copy on Thursday. No point in putting off the inevitable. Now I just need to figure out how many expansions might be coming, and start building a proper carry-case.

Played Friday midday – still thinking about this one. It's a route-building and network creation game, with a bit of light resource management on the side. Not dissimilar to Medieval merchants, but perhaps drier (and smarter). It's another 7-8 rated game, and I'm not convinced that if I bought it I'd play it more than twice, but I am still thinking about it and might buy it anyway, depending on funds and self-restraint.

Played this on Thursday at RGG. Definitely not a purchase for me. Has similarities with Cuba and A Castle For All Seasons (play cards from a limited set that each player has, some of which interact with other players' actions, gather resources and build stuff that is worth VPs). Playing it makes me appreciate Cuba that little bit more, and I can't see myself ever choosing to play Havana over dozens of other, better games, so I didn't buy.

Edit - I might buy Cuba - El Presidente, though. It's half the price here that it is in the UK.

Played Friday evening; played it last at Easter when Martin was finishing it off, and if it's changed I can't tell. The Treefrog family DNA is much in evidence - with a cube collection mechanic, VPs scored by collecting sets, investment cubes to be spent, an income track, turn order shenannigans and no cards.

It is similar in weight to Automobile, but feels less processional and more interactive. It has more going on than in Tinners. It's a better rounded game than Steel Driver. If there is any luck in the game, I can't find it, but the random setup and slightly randomised influence points that are auctioned each turn should mean that games play out differently each time – although the railways built by the players are likely to follow the historical routes most of the time.

The artwork is jarring on the eye (the box illustration has perspective problems; the board is garish), but when you get beyond that I believe that this is the best of the Treefrog games so far. But then I am somewhat biassed, given that Martin's a friend and I demonstrate games for him at a couple of events.

Has German on the cards. All 120 of them. Might be better off waiting for the (inevitable?) Rio Grande version. Which might be available at Essen.

The English edition wasn't available, and I acquired a German edition. I think that the text on the cards might be problematic, but We're going to give it a go once I translate all of them.
