I have at least one story about an amazingly low probability event that occurred with one of my board games. I'm sure you do too!

Let's hear those stories, please.

I bought my copy of this game back when it was on store shelves, I think in the late 80's. Much to my annoyance, it was missing one yellow transport. Back in those days, I never thought to contact the company about getting a new one, I just tried to accept it.

But I couldn't accept it. It haunted me day and night. I tried molding one out of that clay you can bake hard. I thought about learning to make a rubber mold to make my own. I forbid anyone from taking yellow in a game with less than six people, but it turns out the game really falls apart with less than six people.

Life went on. I had a daughter, and with that I got back in touch with my dad who I hadn't seen for 18 years. One day he was over the house and asked if I had ever seen an American Science and Surplus catalog. I hadn't, so he gave me one.

And in those pages, amazingly, was an item for pieces from some board game that they didn't know the name of. But I did. I raced to the internet and ordered a bunch. And now I have my yellow transport!

When I started dating my to-be wife (in 2003), she introduced me to her family. Her step-dad looked so familiar, but there was no reason why I should know him. But I did, somehow. I had no idea how, but I recognized him. It didn't make any sense. He's worked at, and owned, his own small machine shop here in Oklahoma City his entire life, and I've only been in OKC since the late 90's. Sure, he was a world-record holding motorcycle racer, but that's not my "thing" so that wouldn't explain why he looked so familiar. There was absolutely no reason why our paths would've crossed.

A few weeks later, it came to me.

This:
is my father-in-law.

He was the "model" for this painting. And although I don't think I ever played with this card, I had seen that picture probably tens of thousands of times as I sorted through my collection of MtG cards.

Serendipity? Probably not. But it certainly was a strange reason to recognize my future father-in-law.

Last year we had a local Secret Santa. We met up and traded at Guardian Games, one of our FLGSs. When Mary and I walked in, three guys were setting up for a game of Agricola and asked if we wanted to join. We had never played, plus I still had the exchange to do. So we passed. I went over to the table where they gift exchange was gong on. I handed over my gift and received my package. I opened it up. It was Agricola! Animeeples included! We rushed back over to the first table and asked if it there was still time to get in the game. They added us in and taught us right there on the spot. Mary and I lost horribly, but it was the perfect learning experience. It would have been daunting had we tried to learn this game on our own. As soon as we got home that night, we played two more games. It quickly became one of our favorites.
