Almost every 2-player abstract (Chess, Go, GIPF-games, you name it ...) are featuring two colours (mostly black and hite) for the two players. Although this sounds rather logical, I stumbled upon Colorito and thought about more games using colours in a creative way, still being 2-player abstracts. I haven`t found many, I can tell you.

I think, there are a lot of possibilities unexplored.

Please add games and / or ideas for new designs!

This vintage game from 1892 uses two colours per player. The pieces are numbered and have to cross the board to the equally numbered space at the opposite side. Pieces can do a step or jump over any other single piece or do both, first step, then jump. All moves have to end on a space with the piece`s colour (or white).

On the left you see an original copy from 1892, here is my DIY one with "modern" colours:

This is the only other game I found so far. Players can only move a tower if its colour matches the colour of the square that your opponent last moved to. Since it also has the central goal of "crossing", it shares a little bit with Colorito, but not too much.

The travel version of Ingenious is a good two player abstract and although there is a lot of black it is still quite colourful.

There are cards (and as such an element of randomness) so you may not consider this a 'pure' abstract, but the core game is abstract in nature.

Although Volcano can be played with more than 2 players, I've never felt the need or urge to do so. It would become very chaotic, I think. It therefore fits the bill as a colourful abstract for 2 players.

An "oldie" but a goodie.
One player has red-orange-yellow, the other player has purple-blue-green.
Pieces can touch (adjacent orthogonally) only pieces that are adjacent in the spectrum:
red touches orange (and vice versa)
orange touches yellow
yellow touches green
green touches blue
blue touches purple

I created this race game for the design-a-dice-game competition.
Random setup, no random elements during play.

It's a little impractical if you follow my design and make 48 dice; but a couple of lego dice and a bag full of 2x2 lego plates work just as well

Martian Chess can be very colorful if you want--or it can be monochrome! The colors of the pieces are irrelevant; instead, players can move any piece that is standing on their side of the board.

My regular opponent and I stopped playing because we kept coming to draws, but it's a fun tactical abstract, and has the distinction of being the one board game we've played on a plane.

There are probably even more Icehouse games you could add, and more still waiting to be invented. But these are the ones that I think are both colorful and worthwhile with two.
