Some gamers I know get burnt out on games. One minute they can't get enough of a particular game, and the next minute the game is being traded away or sold off.

Add your own game you used to love and the reason it wore out its welcome with you.

I discovered this game by accidently walking into a comic book shop one Christmas 10 years ago. Even though this game intoduced me to "beyond-Walmart" and Euro-games, I simply played this game out. This game still probably has more plays than my top 10 and for 2 years, it was a permanent fixture on my parents dining table. I had Seafarer's, Knights & Cities, and the 5-6 Player expansions. I was obsessed...but then one day about 7 years ago I found BGG and then Princes of Florence and Puerto Rico not long after.

Same thing for me here. Just played it out. Fun game, but I've taken just about every viable approach you can take in the game, with each number of players, over the course of 200+ plays.

I'll still play it, but probably won't recommend it myself too much.

Really excited to see the likes of the expansion cards for San Juan, Race for the Galaxy, and Glory to Rome come out - as the basic mechanic of the game is fun and has lots of potential to be expanded upon.

Back in the mid eighties, we played a lot of this. It was probably our go to game for 2-3 years. After a while everyone knew the strategies and the game really became a big stalemate most of the time with each of the two serious contenders holed up in a stronghold and everyone else just hoping for a lucky summons.

One day, we just stopped playing and no one complained.

This one stands for many games I bought because they first interested me, but couldn't stand the test of time. Cuba wasn't just tempting us.Same happend to such games as Carolus Magnus, Chang Cheng, Funny Friends, Go West, In the Shadow of the Emperor (though I think, that this is still a good game, but I don't want to play it...), King of Siam (that game makes no sense for me), Phoenicia (wow... that one was promising and just so bad...), Tikal.

Traders of Genoa....

Played it maybe 8 or 9 times....First time someone else won but I won every time after that. To start with I loved the way it all worked, the haggling and dealing etc and in ways it's pretty free-form.
Then realized that my voice was always the loudest, that I was dealing OVER everyone else and that I hated myself while I was playing it (not that I was rude, just insistent and aggressive in my strategy) and so haven't played it in aaaages.
My wife's gutted though, she loves the game...But I don't think it's a game that works well if people are being half-hearted about it.

The 1965 edition of this was my first historical wargame. I was delighted with the 1981 upgrade. But it was the same scenario over and over (there are others, I guess, but I always seemed to start with Dec. 16).

Worse, I grew tired of the standard-size hex-and-counter format of wargames altogether. I tried getting back into Bulge via a computer game called The Ardennes Offensive (which was a free download for a while). But even with the help of the computer, I got bored with shuffling unit-counters all along the front.

I still like the idea of wargaming, but today I have to stick to games with small maps (and multiple scenarios, preferably). Tactical games generally work best, except when they get too complicated for my taste.

When I first played this game, I gave it a ten. Five more plays, it had a 9. I even bought a microbadge. Five more plays, I gave it an 8. Right now, it's a 7, just an average eurogame, but with really nice bits.

(It could be, though, that this happened because most of my more recent plays were with newbies, and just a little bit of experience in this one can be a definite killer. I won my last few matches with very little effort

El Grande was my #1 boardgame ever around 2003. (I actually rated it '10 back then).

Then it slowly got passed by big games left and right.

Then I figured out that "area control" is not my cup of tea (leaving exceptions like Struggle of Empires and Hellgame).

But with full five players it can still offer a good gaming session...but far from the enjoyment I got from other games.

Without looking it up I think I rate it '7' nowadays.
