I love BGG, but I think we need just more thing to make it complete - a BGG Hall of Fame. This could work just like other Hall of Fames - games are nominated and only a small number selected every year - and only those that receive a significant number of votes out of the total votes cast.

Below is just a starting idea like any initial Hall of Fame class - feel free to add your own and comment on what has already been presented. Also a Hall of Fame game should be something special - a new idea, new mechanic, something that took the game world by storm, or simply passed the test of time.

I realize also there could be 2 ways to look at this Hall. Select those board games, no matter how old that simply fit the criteria, or select predominantly recent games that fit more within what the majority of people on this website might like. I prefer the former.

Anyway, look it over. Give me your thoughts. Who knows, if I get enough positive feedback maybe I'll refer the list to Aldie to look at.

And remember, these are just my initial, very limited thoughts. You will notice no wargames or collectible card games because I am ignorant in these areas - not because I don't think they would belong.

I also would apologize to our European and other people throughout the world as this carries a U.S. bias. Sorry, but I grew up here so that is the perspective from which I am writing.

These first 3 are old and truthfully in my opinion are worthy receipients of the award. The first is Chess. Just plain old Chess. How could you leave this out? An incredibly tactical game that at times in history has captured the world stage. I personnally grew tired of it because with unequal competitors the best player ALWAYS wins. (And I usually ended up as the weaker competitor). BUT, this game definitely belongs.

I played this once and I must admit - I don't like it. It's too abstract and again like Chess became more a game you need to study to get really good at. I don't want to study a game - I just want to play and have fun. However with that said, how could you keep it out? It's been around for how long (need some help here)? What do you think?

Oh boy, am I going to get a backlash for putting this one up here. This is the lowest ranked game on the list. But let's face it people - who here on BGG has not played this game - let me see your hands. Hmmmmmm, I don't see any hands. Everyone has played it and for many of us we loved it as a kid. It still is the top selling game in the world, at least the western world. Does any game really come close. Plus who hasn't heard of Monopoly? In fact if you asked many people to define the word Monopoly, many would say; "Oh, it's that boardgame made in the U.S. in the 1900s."

Just a quick story on its impact. I remember we hosted some foreign students at our home one evening and one was German. We keep many of our games out and she quickly recognized Settlers of Catan and others. I just thought it was cool being able to talk to a real live German Euro Gamer. Then I asked her, so what game do you play a lot in Germany? Her answer - "Monopoly". Arghh - love it or hate it, the Hall would not be complete without this game.

This may not at first glance seem like it should be selected. After all most people would say it's a good game, but not great. I submit it on the basis that before there were any Eurogames in the U.S., this Avalon Hill entry played like a Eurogame. For whatever reason, it along with Avalon Hill as a company never took off here. (I'm talking with a huge following). But yet, I think because to me it was a groundbreaking game and if released for the first time today would be considered a very good game, it deserves its rightful place. Keep in mind - this game is 47 years old!

Train game are huge here on BGG. I can't think of another genre that has that many games or followers. And I may be wrong, but I believe this was one of the first and is greatly treasured as a collector's game. The game was the forerunner of many of the train games of today.

If you asked people; "What is the game that first got you into Eurogames?", this is the game that tops the list by a mile. It was what really spanned the German invasion of boardgames into America. Hey, and of the ones listed so far, I actually like this one.

It may have gotten old for many, but c'mon, admit it, you realize it's greatness and it's ability to work as a gateway game.

These last two games are the most questionable - and I am sure not everyone will agree with these. First up - Puerto Rico. Why? Because during the time of unprecedented BGG growth this was the number 1 game for what - 3 years? That's impressive. But even more impressive was whenever any new buzz came out about a greatly anticipated game the question was always asked; "Will it beat out Puerto Rico for number one?". In basketball it was always; "Who is the next Michael Jordan?" In gaming it was always; "Will this game be the next Puerto Rico?"

"Edited for spelling error."

Some innovations (or at least bringing relatively unheard of features to the gaming fore):

Geomorphic boards
Scenarios (not just replay a single battle/campaign)
also point values/design your own scenarios to simulate virtually any eastern front action.

I was tempted to nominate Squad Leader, but Panzerblitz and PanzerLeader really refined the basic wargaming approach that Avalon Hill would take.

1955 Careers. Some revolutionary features here:

Multiple commodities. You collect fame and happiness as well as cash.

Selectable Secret Success Formula: You decide before the game starts whether to go for a balanced strategy, cash strategy, fame strategy, etc, and set you own victory conditions. This is secret, so you are never sure when someone can end the game.

Choosing where to go: In Backgammon, Pachisi, Wahoo, etc, you have multiple pawns. You roll the dice then decide which pawn to move. In Monopoly, you have only one pawn, so you can't decide where to go. Careers gives you only one pawn, but you still have choices over where to go. When you land on an occupation, you have the option to go in. You collect Opportunity and Experience cards which you may use in lieu of rolling the dice.

No player elimination, in a game that isn't just travel to the end of the path.

Scientific Football. The picture is not the first edition, but this is the first football game where the players call offensive and defensive plays like a real football game.

The later releases of this game are called Foto-Electric Football. The game does not depend on the photoelectric effect, nor does it involve photography. Foto-Electric Football uses a device which converts electricity into photons. But before the electronic photon emitter, this game was called Scientific Football.
