Like Capt S, I love discussing what's being played and how it's going.

Unfortunately, with the hockey season in full swing, and the Flames vying for number one in the division .... Capt S is a bit, ahh sleepy.

Yes sleepy, so I'll launch this month's look at what we're playing.

It was last month's On the Table list

that made me get off my duff and buy this title. In the first weekend I played the introductory "easy Fox" scenario three times. Hell one time I got no heroes, so that one didn't take long

A great game, very innovative, and a shoe-in for my vote of best wargame of 2009.

Now that I've played two longer scenarios and gotten off the beach (who needs arty now!) I have to say the game's rating dropped a point for me, but only in the bocage. Tracking all the things the German reinforcement locations can do as they merrily put a world of hurt on you gets a bit tedious. "Thank you sir. May I have another sir?"

So the beaches are still the best in my opinion.

I have yet to "win" and I wonder if that will grow old as well.

But a hell of a game and worth every penny.

Speaking of every penny. I like the EFS, but all its titles save Barbarossa: Kiev to Rostov, 1941 are out of print. So you can imagine how I jumped when player's copies of this 12 year old gem and its newer sibling AGN were posted on CSW.

I'm just finishing scenario 3, "Rundestadt Attacks" and Soviet defensive are finally wearing thin. It's a single map affair and only 6 turns long so the Russkies can play a bit more recklessly. And let's not forget, the Soviet armies in the Ukraine were strong compared to their comrades in the center and North.

Next session will feature the longer multi-map scenarios where the Axis really start to have supply headaches. And no, EFS ain't got no "tree bark soup" to save them.

Picked up a copy of this during the Miracle on Consimworld I mentioned above. (And they say Santa doesn't wargame)

Played some of the smaller scenarios, including ... and a kid you not my friends ... an amphibious assault by German forces against islands in the Baltic.

I suspect a solo session of this game's first days of Barbarossa followed by the November Soviet counterattack scenario will be the next sessions to occupy my bowing table.

God help me, I love a good kettle ...

Slow wargame month for me sadly. I did go on a music tour though, so it wasn't all bad.

I'm teaching my friend OCS, so Burma was on the table. It is safe to say I liked the game, check out my review if you are interested and haven't seen it.

I also played The Hell of Stalingrad again. A clever game system that is deeply flawed. I had an interesting discussion with the designer on this site, he certainly achieved his design aims, even if perhaps they aren't ones we would see eye to eye on.

Commands & Colors: Ancients, I played some more of the Greek expansion, which is fun.

ZZZZZ....what......zzzz........

I wasn't sleeping; I was just lost in the rules to the newly acquired Pursuit of Glory.

Thanks for putting this together this month Iain. I was just starting to think about it, but had not got it together as of yet. I will set up a subscription Forum entry for this monthly list as some folks requested it last month.

Yep, I had my first FtF playing of "Warriors of God". I was France in the 100 Years War scenario. Unfortunately, we were not able to finish it, but it did help us get a better feeling for the game. I was not quite able to get the blue blob in place due to some aggressive play by the English into Flanders. It helped me appreciate the value of English play from that direction as opposed to from the west and south. Food for thought.

Bill (billyboy) and I continue our VASSAL game of Afrika: 2nd Edition. We got a few more turns in this month and currently sit around Turn 14 or so. More eastward movement by my Axis minions as we near Mersa Matruh. However, my supply is stretched to the breaking point. I have no idea where this will lead, but I have a horrible feeling that I will eventually have to make some awful decisions soon.

I am also still plugging away with my solo game of A Victory Denied: Crisis at Smolensk, July-September, 1941.

Lastly, wasn't this a great month for game reviews? I read some dandies. I have not seen as many quality reviews in such a short span since I have joined BGG. I think that is at least a partial result of the fantastic Geeklist put together by Strope.

Here is the link to that list: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/46880/page/1

...and here are some the reviews that I enjoyed:

ibn_ul_khattab's Burma: The Campaign in Northern Burma, 1944 review: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/452698

garysax's Clash of Monarchs review: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/450717

Varus' Chandragupta review: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/454162

JoeSteadman's The Halls of Montezuma review: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/454048

A good month indeed! So thank you Jeremy, Colin, Steve, Andy and Joe and thanks to all of you who took the time to put in reviews, session reports, etc. this past month.

This one is still on my table. I rolled so bad gulp for the Germans that they were nearly stuck on the Westwall. Thought it was a defense for the Germans - not a roadblock shake Only right in the middle of the front is a small gap that I try to enlarge a bit.

This game is simple but has some nice "traffic - jam" rules so I have to be careful what to bring up first on the road - especially if I have to move my heavy tanks and arty.

Also on the table preparing for November:

OCS: Sicily: Triumph and Folly - got this game in Essen in mint condition for its original price. One of the best steals I ever had (bragging rights!!!)

I'm soloing through this one and it certainly is a joyfull experience. The German panzers get no rest sofar, closing all the holes that the Soviets put in the German lines. What I like most in this game is the (optional) variable defense strength table. This way the game does not 'degenerate' so easily in endless factor counting.

For November I have face-to-face games of EastFront II and good old Hannibal planned. I think I'm going to end this wargaming year on a high note.

This made it's first appearance with us this month. We didn't get very far into it but got a good feeling about great things to come with this game.

Also this month Paths of Glory has been getting some play......this one doesn't seem like its going to wear out anytime soon.

I'm like a broken record on these lists, but what a sweet, sweet record it is. We've been trying to play HiS once a month or so and got it to the table again on Saturday. This game was marked by the fact that the New World went FAST. Habsburgs got 6 vps from it using just their initial exploration and conquest and England (me) got 2 vps from an exploration - so at the end of turn 1 8 vps were gone. By turn 3 everything was gone. The pope and protestants also had a lot of lopsided debates - the pope burned 5 vps worth of protestants and the protestants disgraced (doesn't seem quite equivalent does it?) 4 vps worth of papal debaters.

Militarily the Ottomans focused on piracy, France and the Habsburgs fought early in Spain; France and England fought late in Northern France. England took out Scotland on turn 1 and got a healthy Edward on his second roll on the pregnancy chart. At the end of turn 4 England was a threat so France and the Habsburgs allied, France loaned two fleets to the Habsburgs and with a big cp card the Habsburgs floated a 5 troop army with Charles into Bristol. England destroyed the pesky fleet easily enough to cut the LOC, but the Habsburgs plopped down Treachery! and took the key anyway, the sneaky bastards. The game ended after turn 6 and was really tight: Protestants 26, Ottomans 25, England 24, Pope 23, Habsburgs 20, France 12. France got really screwed by a strange situation: I as England was allied to France on turn 5. The Habsburgs, who had turned on their erstwhile ally, captured Paris, which allowed me on my impulse to march through French territory and take Paris for myself! Some complicated maneuvers followed, but eventually France was forced to pay for a war against the English, but didn't get much out of it.

Great game!

Spent some "quality" time this past weekend stickering all my new wonderful purple colored blocks. I stickered them all thinking GMT had sent me an extra sheet of stickers. To my dismay they were the correction for the blocks I had already stickered. (sigh....)

Spent some more "quality" time un-stickering to re-sticker with the new stickers.

Played the first scenario after breezing through the rules.

Now I just need to go to the store and find a Plano box for all the new blocks...

I have been on a huge GCACW kick, inspired by some fun FTF (finally) play with an Army officer who found me on consimworld. October was mainly dedicated to Grant Takes Command, Roads to Gettysburg, Here Come the Rebels and Burnside Takes Command.

I also bought A Victory Lost at MMP's corporate headquarters, which I found out is about 10 minutes from my house. What a fine game, in the mold of the classics. And it's very nice to be able to drop in on MMP. Wonderful people, they are.

Playing this on VASSAL, me as the Israelis, my opponent as the Eygptians. We're winding up the second scenario, which has both sides attempting to bomb ground units which are near each other, as well as the Israelis bombing an Egyptian airfield.

I'm not sure who's winning at the moment, since I won't check the victory conditions until the end of the game. The Israelis have shot down 7 (or is it 8?) MiGs/Sukhois, for no loss, which is good. But they've had much less success at bombing (each plane in this scenario has a pretty measly bomb strength), barely damaging the airfield. Most of the ground units are at least damaged.

Great game - more balanced in terms of gameplay than Downtown - but I would like to try a later scenario where both sides have more effective aircraft/defences.

Another VASSAL game underway. I always love a game of DT as the USN!

So far I have two raids on the board. The DRV has been *amazingly* lucky so far by managing to shoot down 2 A-4s and 1 F-4 with Light AAA whilst the flights were at medium altitude. The USN has responded by shooting down a MiG-17 with an F-4B. The SEAD have damaged two SAMs, and the bombers are untouched and on their way to the target. A very interesting game, but I expect the US will find it hard to recover from their losses to gain a victory.

I'm a newbie in a newbie game being run using BoPs online system. It's just got underway with me flying one of two Iraqi MiG-29s in 1991 about to bounce 4 unsuspecting bomb-laden F/A-18Cs. I am very excited by this game; the aircraft are a breeze to play (mechanically speaking) and the tactics are going to be a real challenge. It's great to have some very experienced players offering advice and leading me through some of the trickier areas (mainly sensor and weapons systems and pilot actions).

Had a few hit the table this month, but had to keep it to shorter games that could be played in an hour or two. I need to get some PBEM games going for longer games.

All of these are single plays this month with a 4 player CoH scenario topping the list. The rest were:

Hold the Line This game never fails to give a great sense of tension and is always fun.

Close Action: The Age of Fighting Sail Vol. 1 a short ship on ship battle. We didn't get to finish, but we got a good ways into to it so I am counting it

Commands & Colors: Ancients Expansion Pack #1 – Greece & Eastern Kingdoms Got my first play of this expansion. I took a bad, bad beating..... yuk

Memoir '44: Eastern Front Also my first experience with the Easter Front expansion. I really liked the way the Russians had to give orders. I can't remember the scenario we played, but I barely won 7 medals to 6. I will be playing this expansion much more.

Canvas Eagles: War in the Skies 1914 - 1918 Going to get my first game of this in tonight with my newly completed set! I am looking forward to it.

Yep...back to an old game in the arsenal! Fun to play again and brings back memories of classic battles with my brother. My have to pull out 88: A Tactical Game of Armored Combat on the North African Front, 1940-1942 after this!
I do like playing all my newer war games...but its nice to go back in time for a classic!
