I am wondering what obscure battles are fought in wargames. Battles that are overshaddowed by others at the time like the WW2 Aleutian Islands campaign between the Japaneese and US(alaska)

And Victoria Cross 2, a game about the battle of Rorkes Drift between the Zulus and the British during the Ango-Zulu War.

I think most battles fought in Africa (exception: North Africa in WWII) generally escape the notice of most Americans.

When I got this issue of Strategy and Tactics I figured that S&T had finally done every battle from Napoleon, ACW and WWII. Twice.

This war that ended barely 21 years ago is largely forgotten except by grogs.

While most eyes were on the Western Front during World War I, the Germans were waging a guerilla war in East Africa against the British, Belgians and Portugese.

In November 1914 the first major battle between the German and British forces in the East African Campaign took place - the Battle of Tanga (in modern day Tanzania). It went disastrously wrong for the British, mainly due to poor leadership (and attacks by angry bees!).

Annoyingly I was in Tanga earlier this year and only found out about the battle and other skirmishes in the area after I returned to the UK.

The game is soon to be released by Legion Wargames and could do with a few more preorders. Check it out at: http://www.legionwargames.com/legion_tanga.html

This one rates pretty highly on my obscur-o-meter; Japanese vs. Russians in 1939.

But, on the other hand, there have actually been at least two games featuring this battle.

The American battle cry during the Spanish-American War was "Remember the Maine!" But how many people remember it today?

This is an interesting looking game that combines area-based naval action with hex-based land combat. I've never got around to punching the counters and actually giving it a try, but I hope to do so some day.

They don't get much more obscure than the 1941 war between Peru and Ecuador.

I have little 3-4.5 turn - half-hour lunch? - subgames/gamelets excerpted out of my new Desert Campaign, with each having its own customized map and scenario order of battle.

Besides the much more famous Operation Crusader, Battle of Gazala, and the 3 Alamein battles, I also have:

el Agheila - there were 3 opening (or Dec42 campaign closing) battles there, which are frantically fun to play, with comparatively few units but much time pressure.

Mersa Matruh - for those - playing the Allies - who enjoy the risk of being bypassed and losing the Suez Canal far to the east.
