I am not first and foremost a gamer, but I do like games! Thus, for my first-ever geeklist, I thought I'd combine two things that I love: games & the great outdoors! Given that I have just recently come to appreciate games, my list contributions will be short, but I eagerly anticipate hearing about the shenanigans of others. ninja

The purpose of this list is twofold:
1) to toss around ideas for good portable games, and
2) to (hopefully) hear some funny stories of game-playing in completely crazy situations

First things first: classic minimalist camping games.

Mafia - Sweet game for the end of a long day of just about anything outdoors. I've played it on rock-climbing trips, backpacking trips, and after simple day hikes, and it plays well for a wide variety of participants. In my opinion, Mafia is best played when your narrator is a fantastic storyteller and your group has gotten to know each other well enough to pull off some hilarious and convincing alibis.

My favorite story for this game was not in the context of a particularly adventurous situation, but it gave all of us great laughs for weeks. One evening, my husband and I played Mafia with a group from our church. Toward the end of the game, there were accusations flying left and right and plenty of attempts at self-defense. Our favorite was when our friend Juli was asked for [her] defense. What was it?

She simply stood up, put her hands at her hips (fingers pointed like guns), and shot them off a few times proclaiming, "Cause I'm the Sheriff!!"

It was probably a lot funnier in person than in the re-telling, but hopefully you get my drift. :-)

I learned this game under the name Assassin, but it's nothing like the apparently terrible one floating around here by the same name.

This one doesn't require anything more than a pen and a sense of mischief. The basic premise of the game is to have one player who is deftly picking off the others without getting caught, while everyone else is trying to figure out who it is.

My favorite way to play this one is on a day hike or backpacking trip where you've got quite a lot of walking ahead of you. Assign one person to be the assassin, and have them mark their "victims" (without harming them in any way, of course!)... a few minutes later, the "victim" should concoct a good theatrical exit. Last one alive becomes the assassin for the next game.

You can create all sorts of backstories (an assassin, a deadly virus, what-have-you) to keep it interesting or make it slightly less morbid.

Otherwise known as Speed Scrabble.

One bag of Scrabble tiles works well for up to four players. Inside, you'd play it at a table. Outside... find a picnic table, a sizable stump, a flat spot on the ground or your sleeping mats inside a tent (when it's particularly beastly out).

Since this one is a card game, it packs well in a zipper baggie wherever you have space. It's easy to explain and seems to scale well for its suggested range of players.

My husband and I recently took this one to a local Chik-fil-a campout. Most stand-alone Chik-fil-a's have a "First 100" event where those first 100 folks get coupons for 52 free Chikfila #1 meals. To be one of the first 100, you pretty much always have to get there the afternoon before & camp out in the parking lot. No different for this one...

Whereas my awesome husband (BGG user jeromier) had done several camp-outs before, this was my first one and it was a little crazy. It happened to be in Fort Collins, CO, in the middle of a rather early & kinda heavy snowstorm (1.5 to 2' of snow). Usually, there would be some organized fun, but the weather nixed that possibility. Thus, we spent about 13 hours in barely-above-freezing (and definitely below it) snowy weather, playing games to keep our minds off the cold.

Bohnanza was one of them & was a hit!

I love this one because you can just pack the cards & play as many or as few rounds as you like. Fits well during a lunch break or at the end of the day.

We tend to play by the boss-around rules where each person is basically at the mercy of whoever happens to be of a higher status. Played at home, this game typically involves hats, puppets and impromptu songs. Played on-the-go, it could make for some interesting dares.

Okay, so I haven't taken this one outdoors yet, but I'm hatching a plan to. I just rediscovered Backgammon & think it would be pretty easy to just print a board on waterproof paper, pack an appropriate number of pennies/dimes & a doubling cube!

No box really needed...just friends or family willing to stick rubber eggs in their armpits and run around in circles. Great fun is had by all!
