Unfortunately I had to cut my journey to BGG Con 2009 a bit short this year, arriving on Friday morning and leaving Saturday night. Still, I can assure you I was quite suitably brain fried and very happy I had the experience. I'll most certainly plan on returning. Here is a list of what I played during my two days at the Con.

Many thanks to my opponents, both those from my friendly local gaming group (FLGG), the San Antonio Board Gamers, as well as those I met at the Con. Everyone I played with was great.

Played a quick demo game immediately after arrival while checking out the main hall. Essentially the game is cooperative tower defense. I think we played our turns fairly optimally, but in the end the random draw of monsters from the box proved unstoppable.

I found the game mildly amusing, and it served as a nice palate cleanser from the early morning plane flight to the Con. Now I was ready to move on to more meat and potatoes.

I next played two games of Twilight Struggle against fellow San Antonio Board Gamer, Ardneh42. We played with the new China Civil War Card in play, which we found had a major impact on the Early War. I won playing as the US for the first game via auto-victory in the Late War, For the second game, Ardneh42 taking the US crushed me in the Mid War. Clearly we have not adjusted our USSR play to account the variant. Still, totally awesome games. The Con was rolling now!

We next played Ardneh42's beautifully painted copy of Space Hulk. This was my first time playing so we played the first scenario. Wow! Talk about a game dripping with theme. I was the Genestealers and came withing a few dice rolls of winning, despite excellent play by my opponent. Anyone who has played against me knows that if victory depends on me making a couple dice rolls, I'm totally screwed. Congratulations, Space Marines!

Fellow San Antonio Board Gamer, r3gamer, and I played the 413 BCE scenario of Hellenes. Hands down, this is the best block wargame I've played. I took Athens, and we stepped through a learning game. My opponent immediately popped lots of revolts up in my empire, but I was able to easily cruise around with a rapid reaction force, crushing these and gaining 2 prestige each for my trouble. The assaults were costly, but not so much so that I couldn't keep slightly ahead of the losses with recruitment. A great game, and our discussions on strategy afterward were almost as fun as the game itself.

I wandered and hovered for while, then hooked up with bigtex01 from San Antonio Board Gamers. We locked in on the hot games room and secured seats for a game of Dungeon Lords. I was getting a bit tired at this point, but I have to say I really enjoyed the game. This is a major upgrade from Galaxy Trucker two years ago. Do I need to own it...? I'm on the fence. Still, a solid, fun game.

My first play ever of this game with bigtex01, ardneh42, and Wife of seanp, with seanp looking over my shoulder and tutoring. I am thankful I now understand what all the fuss is about. Great game.

Bigtex01 and I sat through the demo with the designer. I love the theme; I love the nasty, bloody cards. The component artwork may perhaps be on the garish side, but the historical photos were spot on. The attack/destroy back and forth of the game was great, but I really disliked how everything boiled down to just each of use rolling a few dice and checking for the high number. Ugh! So close to being a great game, in my opinion.

While the flea market was underway, bigtex01 and I sneaked into the hot games room and scarfed up the open Stronghold table. I've been wanting to trying this one for a while, and I was determined not to leave BGG Con 09 without doing so.

Despite poorly written/translated rules with lots of typos, I have to say I was very impressed. We only played through a couple of turns, but I am hungry for more. Still, I am hesitant to plunk down $75 until some living/revised rules are published or perhaps a reprint is announced. I suspect this will go out of stock everywhere soon, so perhaps its not a bad short term investment until a revised edition hits in perhaps 1-2 years.

Sadly, my last game of my abbreviated Con journey. This game was everything I expected... Essentially a light, short, quick version of Power Grid without the fuel market or route placement aspects of the game. Good stuff, and perhaps perfect for those nights when I just don't have the time / energy for the full Power Grid experience. I'd love to see this on BSW...
