This year, my Dad (afmoore) came with me to BGG.con. We had a great time, and when asked if he was thinking about coming again next year. Although not an exact quote, the intention is the same: "Definitely." Here's the games we shared with other BGG (as Rajive Gupta said...) "family".

This was the first game we played. Shane and Brian joined us. Always good to see them. I was already hooked. Everyone else got hooked.

Dad picked this one...for those of you who know him: this was no surprise. We caught someone checking the game out of the library as we had just gone in to look for it. We invited ourselves to a game, and 4 sat down to play. (I apologize for not taking everyone's name down, and am a bit embarassed that I have forgotten the other two's names--I would recognize them in a minute, and I played a game with each at BGG.con 2008.) It took us a bit to get it, but by the end it started clicking a bit. Though it moved a little down my list, it moved up Dad's.

Ahhh, the new Splotter game...I coudln't wait...and after we started, we waited and waited as we all tried to figure out how to play. Yehuda blogged his review: (http://jergames.blogspot.com/2009/11/bggcon-thurs.html) an I apologize (again) for blanking out on the 4th person's name. (Soo many people, sooo little time). I concur with Yehuda: we missed something early, and I'm not sure how I feel overall. It was probably the easiest Splotter game I've played as far as learning the rules. To get good will probably take a few more plays.

We weren't sure where to start on Friday morning, so I taught Dad how to play Hive. We played two quick games. I took one (cuz I knew how to play, and sat on his bee with the beetle, and shut him down...) He one one (cuz he learned how to play, and I RARELY beat him at anything abstract.) He got hooked, and I still love it.

After Hive, we broke out Campaign Manager 2008. We had both played 1960: The Making of the President before (Nixon beat Kennedy by about 9--That would be Dad beating me), so picking this up was easy. Dad played Obama, I played McCain. Obama won (again). The designers did an excellent job at streamlining the whole Twilight Struggle/1960 mechanics. I told my Dad: "It was sort of odd. It wasn't so much that there was a good 'theme' as it was a great 'environment'". For clarification: while playing you actually feel like you are watching the returns on election night as each of the battleground states comes in; The commentators are commenting; and the analysis is being provided as to how the "story" went for the state.

This is an excellent game, without getting all bogged down with seriousness.

I had never seen this, but it seemed familiar. I must have had it on an Essen list at some point and never found it.

Political and Historical theme sucked Dad right in, as we played with Sandra and.....ARGH! Was it Username: Cog? I really need to do a better job next year of recording who I play with. The best part of BGG.con is the people, and I lose that part in 2 days after I get home.

Anyway, I remember him, I just blanked on his name (we played a game or two last year.)

As for the game, Dad and I both decided we were going to control the Irish Community, which the the game open to the other two. Will definitely pick this up if I ever come across it.

Had an e-mail exchange with the designer (Matt Campbell) about 6 months ago. Bumped into him in Dallas, and set-up an appointment to play. If home is someplace other than where your games are, then mine is in Omaha with lots of college friends, and, oh yeah, the family.

Dad's first 18xx game, which was a little daunting as Matt said he was trying for an "advanced" 18xx game. Luckily Dad and I didn't know enough to play advanced, and the third person just played nice. I played terribly, and Dad came in a close 2nd, probably would have won if he didn't get screwed on the last obsolesence.

We both liked this a lot.

Looking for something with nothing catching our eyes we checked out this little Victory Point Games Offering. Dad likes historical simulations, and I am a sucker for anything WWI.

We played through 2 scenarios and felt like "that's it"? We were starting to get tired (trying to stay awake for midnight madness); we agreed that we must be missing something. I've played 5 or 6 VPG games int he past (including the State of Siege series) which I relly liked, so I will revisit this again. Hopefully we missed something.

Of course, I'll end up buying it either way, that whole "sucker" for WWI thing and all.

Still trying to kill time for Friday Night Midnight Madness, we decided to play a quick 2 player game of Small World. Shane happened by, so he joined us. I think the entire game took 90 minutes, with 30 of that not playing as they were doing the prizes from Thought Hammer Games.

One thing I should mention, the entire Con was exceptional. Smooth, no problems...some little irritants ($10 a day Wifi access) but still a MUST GO Show. Great job Aldie and Derk. and GREAT JOB all the BGG.con volunteers, family, and friends. Thank you for the highlight of my year.

When the vendor areas opened on Thursday morning, the walls were not even finished moving when when looked like more than 40 people made a bee line to Z-Man Games. Apparently there was a new game called Dungeon Lords which everyone HAD to HAVE before anything else could continue. For me The artwork looked fun, and all the bits were cool, but I wasn't sure.

Happened into a game on Saturday morning. Dad won by 1 point. He's not sure how he won (he got a ton of the bonus points, that's how) and I think he's been dreaming about the game cuz he hasn't wrapped his head around it yet. Played with 4, I was DEAD last. At first I didn't really care for it, but as I've been thinking about it, I think I need to give it another try. I really like the combat, and the theme and artwork make me giggle. "OH CRAP! There's the Palladin."

After having lunch with Lita and Dennis, Dad and I sat down to play Die Macher, with them, and their friend Matt. I met Lita and Dennis two years ago at BGG.con 2007, and always look forward to seeing them.

Dennis was hot on Die Macher this year, and I've always liked the game even though I'd only played twice. Dad was the the only newbie. Just like Dungeon Lords, Dad had a hard time wrapping his head around things as there was Sooooo much going on.

There were also tons of interuptions, and we really didn't stay as focused on the game as we should have. Total time: 1:30 - 8:45. That included 40 minutes for Sunday night's grand prize give aways.

Oh, did I mention I won...

We were going to play a game of Alcazar (hopefully with Shane and Brian), but they were getting ready for another game, so the 4 of us got in a quick 4 round partner game of Crokinole. Dad and I beat them by about 100 points. That's when they realized I owned a game, and that every year around the holidays (the board comes our this week) I sit there for hours doing nothing but playing solitaire Crokinole. I really should enter a tournament to learn some humility... :-P

Had not heard of it, didn't know what it was, but when I saw what I thought was a new version of Torres, and someone said it was Torres with a bit of Acquire thrown in, I was all about giving this a try.

Dad and I sat down at about 11:00 on Saturday night (it was the last game we played). The rules weren't hard, other than the fact that we were both bleary eyed and really should have been in bed already.

I REALLY liked it, Dad liked it. This is on my must buy list right now. Will try to get the German edition, as it's my understanding that no one has picked it up in North America yet.

Note: There was also rules for something called Big Boss. Looked like same components different game. No English translation for that, so not sure. Anyone know?

I apologize if I am spelling this wrong, but Dad and I got to speak with Rajive Gupta from Queen Games for about 30 minutes on Sunday morning before we had breakfast. He and Dad got into a conversation about history and games (I zoned out for a minute and lost track of how they got there). He was an incredibly charming man, and shared his perspectives on his company and the industry with candor. I look forward to meeting him again sometime, and I wish that I had had more time to get to know him a bit. Thanks to Derk and Aldie for inviting him.
