I've been to every BGG.CON and did not plan for this year to be any exception, although fate tried to get in my way at every turn.

Ten minutes before we left the house we got a call from my honey's ex stating that she decided NOT to come get my stepson for the weekend, despite our offers to pay for her gas and remind her of all the favors we have done for her over the years and the fact that since she moved away from him she doesn't get to see him much as it is.

The next six hours were spent listening to her and my honey fight it out.

It eventually was resolved and we brought him with us to hand-deliver him to his "mother".

Fun times.

On our way out of town, we stopped at Jack in the Box to pick up lunch. Within 45 minutes, Jason was complaining of stomach upset.

When we got to Dallas he was still feeling awful so he stayed in the room and told me to go off and have fun.

I tried. But I was so ronery! (And very empathetic of his discomfort since I suffer from flareups of imflammatory bowel disease myself fairly often.)

My first game of the con was 1846. I took advantage of poor Jason's absence to play this since I love 18xx games and he doesn't - so I rarely play them. At this point we both figured he'd only be sick the first night... how little we knew.

But, it was a great game and I had lots of fun with it. It was the kindest, gentlest 18xx I'd ever played since the stock doesn't tank when you sell it.

I played with Jim McDanold, Byron McDanold, TomMcCorry and Trey Stone. Jim won by a yard, I came in second with Byron very close behind me.

What is a con without post-midnight Tichu?

I played with Matthew Monin (Octavian), Tiffany Jones (aka Toggy), and a lady from Falls Church whose name I am frantically trying to remember...help me out here. She was my partner and we pulled off a great win. We had some really amazing hands though. (It's hard to beat 1-J + A + Dragon). I think the highlight was overbombing Octavian's King Bomb with a straight flush bomb. Teehee!

The next morning, Jason thought he was feeling better so we went to get breakfast at Chick-fil-a (it not being Sunday and all). Then alas he started feeling off again so decided to just try to play something short and see how it went.

We ended up with Nanuk, an up-to-8-player light game about cavemen boasting about their hunt. Basically the players make boasts about how many of a certain type of animal they can catch in a certain number of days. The more days you hunt though the more likely a bear will find you - ouch!

It's got elements of bluffing, set collection, and was pretty fun. However it definitely is the kind of game that needs a full complement of players so I didn't see a reason to pick up a copy (since we usually only have 2 or 3 at home.)

We managed to sneak one more quick-ish game in before Jason had to go back to the room and crash. It was Thunderstone, a "Dominion clone" with a dungeon crawl theme.

Leaving aside the question of its provenance, I saw it as a variation on the theme but not for the better in most respects. The mechanics that were added to differentiate it from its inspiration were clunky in my opinion and not necessarily necessary in some cases. (The "light/darkness" added unnecessary complexity when a pure attack +/- would have been less confusing). The concept of hero "strength" (what they could carry) added some complexity but caused confusion with attack power.

The graphic design had usability problems also - there were lots of numbers on the card with no accompanying symbology to remind you which was which. (XP / Victory points, cost, attack power, strength...) Even more annoying was how small some of the numbers were (esp. cost) and how difficult it was to tell what an opponent across the table was doing.

Anyway, it wasn't awful - don't get me wrong - but I don't see any improvement upon Dominion at all except for theme integration which is stronger here. Since I already have 3 versions of Dominion I don't see any place for this one in my library.

Here's where my timeline gets fuzzy. From here on out I don't remember what day or order I played anything - since Jason is usually the one keeping the detailed session reports, I blame him.

But I do know I played a game of Campaign Manager with Danny Wilson from my old Dallas Gamers group. I love this game! It is very different from Jason Matthews & Christian Leonard's other efforts - much lighter, much faster, but with just as much tension. I have seen some people worry that it is "too soon" for a 2008 election game but really you aren't thinking about that as you play. It is red vs. blue and really not politically charged or biased at all. You may have a problem if neither player will play a candidate they hate though!

This game went down to the wire - 267 to 271 if I recall correctly, with only New Hampshire undecided at the end. Blue (me) won by a nose.

So then Jason gets this brilliant idea that he should just eat lots of meat and insists on going to Hard 8 for barbeque, despite my cajoling that chicken soup might be a wiser meal choice.

I order a ribeye, he orders brisket and bacon wrapped jalapeno shrimp. Um yeah. He gets through one piece of shrimp, some beans and a small amount of brisket before uttering those rarely heard words "you were right, this wasn't the best idea".

Back to the hotel room for poor Crim...

Treasure hunting with inductive logic where you build the clues to narrow down where it is. I like it. On the buy list.

So I am on my own once again with instructions to "play something really long". So I sit down in the Hot Essen Games room and start reading the rules to Shipyard.

A nice guy comes by and gives me a quick rules summary, and then I start reading them again to see if I can learn it well enough to teach it to any other comers.

Soon after I get one interested taker, a friendly guy whose name I think was Carl and I started muddling through the explanation. Luckily, another couple who had already played named Ray and Shawna came by and Ray did a good job teaching the game.

The jury is still out for me on this one - there are a lot of elements to the game that I liked, but I felt like it was too long with four and for the first half of the game I felt like I never had good choices for action because the best ones were already taken - Ray was playing right before me and usually it was him who had the action I wanted, which meant that when I took it the next turn I would get no money (based on the mechanic of giving you money based on the position of the action on the track plus the mechanic of moving your previous action to the front of the track when you leave it.) So I had little opportunity to get money for extra actions to make up for people being on the ones I wanted.

This was partly my own fault - I needed to better manage my choices to both get "out of sync" with the others and to use opportunity to my advantage - but may also have partly been due to cyclicity in the 4 player game.

I really want to try this with 2 or 3, I think I will like it better. If not, it will go in the category of "games that seem like I should love but I don't" which is currently captained by Das Zeptor von Zavandor, which I would sooner spork myself in the thigh than play again despite it being one of those "snowball" engine building games I usually like.

At some point I had a nice game of Tinners Trail with Isaac Bickerstaff, Giles Schildt and .... shoot, I think it was one of the DC Gamers, either Simon Halder or Thommy8 but darned if I can remember which one. I know I played something with both of them... erg. I am old. Someday I will write this stuff down. Ah, who am I kidding - no I won't... but it's nice to pretend I might stop being lazy someday. But I digress.

Anyway, I love this game, always have, probably always will. And I usually lose. This game was no exception even though I was the only one that had played it before. Giles managed to get not one but TWO $1 mines by bidding at the end of the turn. That pretty much made for certain destiny. We had fun anyway though.

This one was an ok racing game, but really seemed to pale coming after Snow Tails which is superior. I heard that it was an overflow of mechanics that got cut from Snow Tails. Anyway, I'd play it but it wasn't too exciting.

I really liked this one a lot. I played with Larry Levy, Richard Breese and Thommy Rosen...ok, then I guess those other two were the ones with Simon Halder then. So now my memory comes back...teehee.

As I said, I liked this. It was a solid Euro with a bunch of familiar and some unfamiliar mechanics in the family of "choose from a bunch of stuff but you never can do everything you want to." It seemed to move really fast, slowed down a bit at the end but not in a painful way.

The one thing that cracked me up about this game is the map. Just go look at it yourself and you'll see what I'm talking about. Someone is a bit geographically challenged...

But great game. I may want to pick this up.

I had been trying to play this ALL WEEKEND and Jason really wanted to know if it was worth buying. Luckily I finally got it in Saturday night with MisterCranky, Isaac Bickerstaff, and Hibikir (Jorge Montero).

This is a really fun game (IMNSHO). While it does share the build-it-up/tear-it-down idea with Galaxy Trucker it is nothing like it otherwise. It is much more involved and is not a race. Each turn you choose three actions to do, and two of those three choices will thus be unavailable to you the next time. Which order you do them is important as well, since the first person to get to an action doesn't necessarily get the best return out of it and the first or sometimes last might get shut out of the action.

But, it's great. Build rooms and monsters for your dungeon, don't forget to feed them, and then fight off the evil adventurers before they invade your home too far.

The rules are classic Czech Games with plenty of humor and very easy readability.

There's just one problem...I can't see this game working well with less than 4. And I don't have four players at home. Le sob. I shall have to leave it as a "convention game".

It was great to finally game with Cranky after several years of passing like ships in the night. Jorge in classic fashion kicked our butts. I have never played a game with Jorge that he DIDN'T kick my butt in. He is either a superbrain or a cheater cheater pumpkin eater! I think it is the first one though

Yay! Sunday Jason felt better! So we played this one with a nice lady from Australia (Kerrin).

I like it but don't think it will have the staying power of Power Grid. I would like it for several more plays I am sure. Probably not a good 2p though so won't likely buy.

And then it was time for You Know Who to bring the kids back, so we had to get going.

Next year, I really, really hope Jason and I both manage to not get sick so we can fully enjoy the con again.

I remembered one more!

I played an abstract strategy game from Essen that I didn't know the name of, but if you saw it you'd know it is the one I'm talking about.

It's 4 level, 3-D Connect Four with marbles.

The "trick" is that when you get 4 in a row, you take an opponent marble off the board and the marbles in your row are "safe" from removal.

I really enjoyed it and tied my opponent whose name I think was Mark.
