As a lot of you might know, I am a huge fan of Ronnie James Dio. The greatest vocalist to ever set foot on planet earth; the voice of legendary bands like Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Dio

Ronnie has been an endless source of inspiration in my life. Both on a personal level and as a musician. Not a day goes by without one of his songs playing in my ears.

I was devasted to hear that, for the first time in his career, he had to cancel a tour due to health reasons

Here is the latest update from Wendy Dio:

"Ronnie has been diagnosed with the early stages of stomach cancer. We are starting treatment immediately at the Mayo Clinic. After he kills this dragon, Ronnie will be back on stage, where he belongs, doing what he loves best, performing for his fans.

Thanks to all the friends and fans around the world that have sent well wishes. This has really helped to keep his spirit up.

Long Live Rock and Roll, Long Live Ronnie James Dio"

- - -

This is a geeklist to honour, pay tribute to and show the greatness of Ronnie James Dio. Keep your fingers crossed, pray, wish, cast a spell, donate to science - whatever flicks your switch - that Ronnie recovers fully from this awful disease.

Stay strong, Ronnie! Make sure to get well and I'll see you on tour in the future.

Please share your thoughts, comments, memories - anything relating to Ronnie James Dio.

Although active as a musician since the late 50's, Ronnie's first claim to fame came through the band Elf. This four piece rock act caught the eye of British legends Deep Purple who invited Elf to go on tour with them.

Wanting to explore a new musical direction, guitar legend Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple asked Ronnie James Dio to join his new project. The songwriting duo Blackmore/Dio was an instant success. Rainbow's debut album was released in 1975 and featured 3/4 of Ronnie's old band, Elf, as a rythm section.

Wanting to lift the music to an even higher level of excellence, Blackmore decided to fire Ronnie's old buddies from Elf and replace them with new musician. The result was nothing short of spectacular. the follow-up album "Rising" (1976) is a mile stone in the hard rock/metal genre.

In 1979 Ronnie decided to leave Rainbow, since blackmore wanted to take the band in a more radio friendly direction. A new job offer came from one of the greatest metal bands of all time. But before we get to that era I thought I'd mention Ronnie's guest appearance on ex-Kansas guitarist/keyboard player/composer Kerry Livgren's solo album "Seeds of change" (1980). Ronnie sang on two tracks that are nothing short of spectacular. Livgren's songwriting really fit Ronnie's voice like a glove. Check it out, if you haven't heard it!

The Black Sabbath era. With a series of failed studio albums behind them, Black Sabbath had split ways with their extravagant frontman Ozzy Osbourne. Guitarist Tony Iommi contacted Ronnie and they met up to have a jam session. The chemistry was perfect. Ronnie joined Black Sabbath as their new front man and their "debut" album "Heaven and Hell" was a enormous hit. For the first time ever Black Sabbath sold platinum in the USA.

Heaven and Hell is a legendary album. Critics and fans agree, it is a masterpiece.

The Black Sabbath era lasted for three years. The band split up on bad terms. Ronnie felt it was time to start his own band. Joining him was former Rainbow bass player, Jimmy Bain; his old Sabbath drummer, Vinnie Appice and the young guitar wiz Vivian Campell (later in Whitesnake and Def Leppard).

The new band, riding on the fame of their singer, was named after the man himself: Dio.

Their debut album "Holy diver" (1983) was a huge hit. With instant classics such as "Holy Diver", "Don't talk to strangers" and "Rainbow in the dark", Ronnie showed the world that he could stand on his own two legs and deliver.

In 1990, Ronnie and Black Sabbath decided to reunite. Although some issues probably should have been resolved more thoroughly, the songwriting magic was still there. The new album "Dehumanizer" (1992) displayed a heavier and slightly darker side of Sabbath. It is an amazing album but unfortunally it would be the only one. The band split up during the tour of the album and Ronnie returned to his own band, Dio.

The post-Black Sabbath nineties can be seen as somewhat weaker period in Ronnie's career. Like many other bands, Dio explored alternative paths to try and please the fans. And just like every other band that alters their sound to please someone else, they failed. The albums "Strange highways" and "Angry machines" were the lowpoint of his career, in my opinion.

In 2000 Ronnie wanted to return to his old sound, to his true self. The two ensuing Dio albums "Magica" and (especially) "Killing the dragon" showed the fans that the man was back and that he meant buisness. Many a fan cried tears of joy when they realized that the old Ronnie had returned.

In 2007, Ronnie once again decided to reunite with his old pals from Black Sabbath. This time the guys sat down and talked things over. Gone were all the old grudges. A new spirit of amicability and creativity entered in its stead. to differentiate themselves from the Ozzy Osbourne era, they decided to rename the band: Heaven and Hell - and to only play songs from the Dio era(s).

The reunion tour was a huge success. Unlike Ozzy, Ronnie had always taken good care of his voice and always gives a superb performance, night after night. The band was rejuvinated and the fans loved it. The first release was a live cd/dvd which displayed the bands power and excellence.

A new studio album was realeased in april 2009, called "The devil you know"

After the tour in support of "the devil you know", Ronnie wanted to reunite with his old friends in Dio for a quick European tour. The dates were booked, the fans were hungry for rock...

Then disaster struck. Ronnie was taken to hospital, the tour was cancelled. Ronnie's wife/manager, Wendy, announced that Ronnie was diagnosed with an early stage of stomach cancer.

On forums, blogs and websites all over the world fans are pouring out their support, love and admiration of this great artist. Wishing him a full and speedy recovery. The master of metal has given his fans incredlible music for more than 50 years. Now it is our turn to give something back to him. Send him your love in any way shape or form.

This geeklist is dedicated to Ronnie James Dio

Don't forget he organized the "Hear N' Aid" superstar lineup that recorded "We are Stars"(which Ronnie wrote) to raise money for famine relief.

There was a second planned song to benefit a charity that Ronnie James Dio has been involved in for years (Children of the Night), that benefits runaway children. This was to be a song called "Throw Away Children".
