So there are some games out there...they are really good games but for me the setup of the game is annoying. Have you ever had that feeling before? What's going to shock you is the setup (or clean up in some of these cases) really isn't so horrible. I never seem to mind setup for Puerto Rico for instance and it's setup process will definitely be more obnoxious than some of the ones I'm going to list. Still these games will often remain on the shelf instead of being played because I just don't like the the setup.

I don't really have a LOT of these but it does kind of bug me that they exist at all. I'd also like to see who else has this feeling about a game or two of their own.

Have your own? List 'em.

Certainly one of the first to really take the cake for me is Heroscape. I like this game. I really do. When it came out I really got into it...briefly. I even printed out the cards to use my fig's from Battle Ball as an army. They were fun to play with. I find it however ZERO fun to build the landscapes and about -1,000,000 fun to dismantle it and attempt to get the stuff back in the box. Yikes!

I think I really enjoy this game. I say think because I'm certain I need more plays to get a good feel for it. However it sits on the shelf because of the need to get all those little tiles in their little stacks. I don't even use the board...a friend suggested you put all the tile that can be bought for wood together the others that need whatever that resource is together and it makes more sense...which is does. Still it's one of those things that keeps me from playing this game more.

I like Memoir. This one I'm certain of. I feel it's the best of the CnC line of games to date. Enough detail to be interesting and not too much to make it drudgery. Still lots of time the thought of getting this out and setting it up is just more than I'm interested doing. Perhaps I've bought too many expansions for this game and that's what is making it the chore. Perhaps I've just played it enough that the trade off doesn't seem worth it. I'm not certain but Memoir doesn't make it off the shelf much anymore. I do know that this situation is also exacerbated by me having played Manoeuvre. I certainly would much rather play this game AND it's setup process is...well...much more simplified.Put out 4 tiles for the board, a deck of cards to each player...BAM done. Sorry Memoir.

This game would see a lot more play if it weren't for having to setup the deck! I get that's the mechanic used to progress through the game but still...there's a block or something and I have to look up what needs to be done EVERY time I play the game. Sure it's possible if I played it more I'd remember it but then again I'd have to be agitated by it more to learn it...oh the conundrum.

I'll pre-emptively add this one. It does have a fairly involved setup time... BUT the setup time can be greatly reduced by following a few simple steps.

First, the buildings. if you have everyone spend a few seconds and put thier buildings back into the proper place at the end of a game, you can then stack them up in order. Next time you play, just drop the stack 2 pieces at a time onto the board and bang its ready to go. You can use a rubber band on the tile stack to keep it in order (the rubber band shouldn't matter if it marks them, or you can use Hugo's Amazing Tape if you want to keep the building tiles pristine), or tuck boxes, or whatever.

Second, the components that vary according to players (colonists, VP chips, ships, roles etc). This one is also something that can be mitigated. You can setup 3 baggies with the 3, 4, and 5 player components in them. So if you play with 3 players, just use that bag. If you play with 4 players, add both bags together, etc. There's info on the BGG PR page (in a thread or file I forget which) about exactly what to put into the baggies, or you can just look at the differances in the manual and put differances into baggies. What I did was stick a label onto each baggy that tells what goes into it, so then its easy to figure it out when cleaning up.

At the very least, if you don't do any of the above techniques (which add a little extra time on the cleanup, but greatly lessen setup time, and usually cleanup people are discussing what game to play next anyway), then use this picture to avoid counting colonists when you play:

My patience threshold for set-up time is correlated with the length of the game. I don't mind all the time involved setting up Runebound (Second Edition) or Arkham Horror because I know there will be many subsequent hours of payoff. But, for its gamelength, I find Pandemic to have an annoyingly involved set-up, what with shuffling cure cards, dealing them, setting up them up in to 5 equal piles, putting the epidemics in, shuffling each pile again...

Unlike Dvonn, where setting up is part of the game, this starts with every single space filled with a piece randomly. Then the game's over before you can blink. Almost takes longer to set it up then to play!

I'm not complaining mind you, though this game can take quite a while to setup. Especially when you're trying to find the identical tiles to place from the Missions Book examples, as each tile is uniquely detailed with various blood stains and surface damage.

Now I don't mind complex set-up routines: there's something nice and ordered in the mind about stacking up all the various bits and pieces in Agricola or Pillars of the Earth. But this one takes the biscuit. Any game that takes longer to set up than to actually play a 2-player game needs to be on my trade-list.

Okay, I am breaking the rule of this list 'cuz I like to play it but....

For those of you who hate setting up Puerto Rico or other Euro's, Welcome to Wargaming World

To set up WiF (admittedly a heavy game):
Agree on who is playing which side
Agree on which of the ~15 "in Flames" modules that will be in play.
Agree on optional rules/variants (No two people ever play WiF the same way.)
Two major maps (plus maybe the America & Africa mini maps)
Production spiral
Sorting, picking and placing about 200-300 counters on the map for the '39 start.
Each capital ship in the game is placed by name.
All other units are sorted by year and only those dated 1939 or earlier go on the map
All other units need to be sorted by year created (i.e. units created in 1940 are in a different pool than those created in '44 etc.). Oh, btw, there are a couple thousand units.
Units that are under construction are placed on the production spiral based on unit type and date of arrival.
American entry chits are sorted and pooled.
Etc., etc.

Not mandatory but most players prep the game with support sheets or whiteboards that contain:
Current production (factories/resources)
Oil location and transport
Weather by zone
Speed of turn
US options avl/picked

Plus various charts, dice, are liberally strewn across the table.

Also, as an aside, I use ice cube trays to keep all the units separated (by type, nationality and year.). I think at last count I use something like 20 of them.

Final note: It has been a couple years since I have played the game and a lot of the expansions/rules are mixed together. If I ever play the game again, I would seriously consider plunking down the $300 necessary to buy a clean copy of everything just to save the headache of trying to put humpty dumpty back together again.
