I have come to experience that the easiest games to get out among my group of friends are the games that are easiest to teach. They just get played more as they are more realily grasped by other people and therefore they make it to the table more often. They are not neccisarily family games, but the five minute teaching rule seems to be the easiest way of getting a game out among friends.

Anyone else with simular experiences? (P.S. if you add a game to the list, include a teaching strategy if possible)

This was one of my first purchases and one of the games that was origonally one of the easiest games to get out. I think in part because the 6 steps were easy to grasp (except the climate changes) and becuase it resembled a simple war game. That and there was only one card that was confusing.

Teaching: Give each new player the teaching aid card. Explain the climate rules and when stuff dies. Explain the one hard card (but don't hand out cards until round three). Then start the game. Teach each of the six steps as you play them!

Best example of the five minute rule! Fun factor from the five minutes to teach is a huge reason why this game comes out sooooo often!

Teaching: "You have three possible actions each turn". Explain each action. Give them the tickets and go! A couple of turns in, tell them how the game ends.

7 minutes to teach and lots of tension.

Teaching:"You are building a palace. You have 4 different types of cash. These are the buildings you can buy." Show them the market. Then show them how to build (must connect to the fountain, walls must match). Then go!

In place of Alhambra, I'd suggest Metro is easy to teach. I think I can sum it up in less than five lines:

1. Each turn, either play the tile in hand (and draw a replacement), or flip over the top tile and play that.

2. Line up the arrows (unless playing with the variant), and place next to existing track (or outer rim).

3. When a path is completed, score 1 point per track segment for that color, and remove the train (double score if the path ends in the center).

4. Can't place a tile so that a train only scores one point if other options exist.

Phew! Made it (:

How basic is this one...there isn't even any setup.

Place a piece anywhere while trying to surround your opponents piece.

Simple, right!

I find this one is a lot easier to teach than the original. The hunters are a lot easier than farmers, and you can always move on to the original + expansions later...

You can teach the complete rules in about 5 minutes with this one. Very easy, and pretty deep for such an easy rule set. Plays quick too. Great game.

Feurio is easy to teach, but not so easy to master. Takes atleast a play to get a hang of how the fire will spread.

Five minutes for the basic rules and a demonstration, the occasional look-up of the few special damage cards and away you go! The game is fantastic fun and open to lots of tactical play.

I played this game for the first time last weekend. I picked up the rules from watching a game in progress for a little while then joined in on the next game. As simple as that, but with lots of clever play. It really had the feel of a cycle race, holding something back for the final sprint and trying not to expend all of your fast moves too early in the race.
