I continually hear people refer to board gaming as an addiction, and I do it as well. As I was sitting downstairs last night, I had Monday Night Football on. I was looking around the room at the games that I have, I have the notebook on my lap looking at BGG, and right next to me I have instructions for games that I want to learn to play.

What have I done? Where did this all start?

The events in this geeklist are true and I feel it is time to come clean on my habit. I must either fight the board game demons or find peace with them. My name is Tim and I have an problem. I am an addict.

It all started so simple. I never felt that a family member would lead me down this path...the type of path that consumes my being.

It was a chilly evening after the Christmas holiday several years ago. My BIL brings out a game that I had never seen and asks if people want to play. Assuming there would be no harm, I offer to sit at the table if for nothing more than to amuse my BIL. The play begins and the spell of the game begins to engulf me as we play. I was able to resist initially and found that I wasn't necessarily drawn to the game over and over again, but it did peak my curiousity.

After several plays on several different occasions, I cave and decide that I must have this as my own versus versus always taking a hit from the game that belongs to my BIL. This way I can get a quick fix whenever I want...seems simple enough.

I was satisfied. No desire really to get to a stronger level or to go to anything harder.

Then he did it to me again. My BIL added an expansion to the game to give it a bit more. It was a different sort of high...a little better even. Again, I had seen very few board games that had expansions. This just made the craving for more even stronger.

I had to ask where his source was...and he was more than happy to tell me. A single online retailer was providing him with these games so I headed out there to look.

When I went out there to the retailer, I wasn't sure what I was looking at. A lot of strange names that I had never heard of and each with a significant cost. I wasn't sure if I was ready to experiment yet with new games that I had never heard of or played.

BIL recommended Ticket to Ride. Enjoying the stuff he originally brought along, I figure I would give this a try as well. It came in the mail and then sat for a few weeks. I was afraid. Would it be as good? What if it soured my enjoyment? I knew I had to try it...

And we did...and it was good...very good. If this is this good, I wonder what others are like....hmmm...

Knowing that I was riding off of information from strictly a single person, I knew I had to be careful to some levels. Everyone's tastes are different and what may satisfy one person may not do it for another.

When I met up with my best friend in Seattle, he introduced my wife and I to Settlers. Again, another game I knew very little about but this was a different opinion, a different person, someone that I had trusted for years upon years...I knew he wouldn't lead me wrong.

He didn't. We were immediately thrown into a game with all the expansions at the same time. The board was overwhelming and mesmerizing all at the same time. We played several games over the days we were there. I knew at that point I was headed towards needing this game for myself...and the need to find others.

My SIL was the last person that I would have expected to push me over the edge on this. She enjoys some games but can give or take them mostly. She told me that some of her friends get on boardgamegeek.com to look up information about games.

At that point the levy fell versus the flood of information that I found when I got on the site. Never did I know that there were so many games. Never did I know that there were so many people struggling and coping with the same addiction.

I no longer felt that alone...

After finding BGG.com, I now wanted to find a game store that I could actually go and look at some of the games. While I enjoy looking on the internet, I needed to find a location that would give me a quick fix if I needed it without having to wait days until the stash would arrive.

After searching for a bit in the midwest forums, I found a store. I also found people that went regularly to feed this same addiction that was inflicted with...could this be possible? Was I really addicted? I knew quite a few people in college that were involved heavily in games but I never could get that interested...so maybe I wasn't too bad off?

And then the moon and stars aligned. I finally realized that I was in need of more game playing that I was getting. I didn't know people that would be interested in what I was playing for games so I needed to find others that maybe would help control the addiction.

I went to the FLGS store and off to the "back room"...the location that some peer into but never enter. For some, it is a world that is too different than their own, too strange for comprehension, and basically just too much to take in. I realized that in order to feed this addiction, I would have to enter that world...and I did.

It was a room of people ready to feed their addictions with new games and doing it in the confines in a small room in the back of a game store in a strip mall. A room that only some dare to enter...and I was more than happy to do so.

After several weeks of going, my addiction seemed to be leveling off. I was feeding the need to play games and had great people to enjoy the games with. So I thought I had maybe hit my point and now would just be able to coast...not so much.

I then picked up a level of terminology that was foreign to me before but now came as second nature. Terms like "worker placement", "dice-fest", "the geek", "meeple", and many other became part of my vocabulary. To some, this may be as if I am speaking in tongues, but to those that understand, it is the language and enjoyment of gaming.

I realized that I was getting in quite deep when rule books started making a lot more sense. These rules would follow similar mechanics each and every time. I was finding that I had game instructions next to the bed so that I would read them before I went to bed. Heck, sometimes I would take a rule book and read it while in the bathroom.

I kept wanting to learn more games...needed to know more...but the more I know, the more I want to play...and I need more time to do so...and the vicious cycle continued...

Now that I wanted to learn more games, I needed to purchase more games. Not only did I want to get the ones that I had tried, but I wanted to get ones that haven't been tried but sound good. Risky yes...but one has to take risk to get the reward right?

But I never could just buy the one or two I was looking for...it was then a quest to see if I could find something that I would want to try to push my order to the free shipping level. If I couldn't get it there, I knew of others that would also want to buy and therefore help me get to the free shipping.

And if I can't justify it with free shipping, hey, why not tell yourself that it may be out of print soon? It may be a limited run!

Now my addiction was not only growing but it was involving others...and soon it began to take over the house.

Once the order is placed, the high of the initial idea of the games coming wears off and I am leave with the feeling of "What have I done?".

How do I explain this to my wife? Where am I going to put these games at? Hell, I haven't even played some of the ones that I have and I am getting more?

Then the money idea hits. I was only going to buy two games and now I have four or five. Why didn't I just stop with the two? Why is it so easy to justify free shipping by buying more? Okay...no more for a while.

And "a while" usually means the very next day I am on the computer looking at more games. Maybe not purchasing but definitely window shopping with the idea of purchasing at some point.

Pretty soon games were consuming space like a plague throughout the house. It was covering shelf after shelf and then would spill out onto the floor. Yet I seemed to be blind to this startling growth because I craved more games even knowing that space was starting to become an issue. My wife and friends even started noticing the changes and questioned the need for such a collection.

As with many addictions, I quickly turned my head in an attempt not to hear the truth. To not see that which was consuming not only me but now my family as well...

So how does one deal with the family and an addiction like this? Why get them hooked as well! It only makes sense right? My oldest son was the easiest to convert and quickly had him playing different games and recommending different games to me and my wife.

My wife was a bit harder of a sell but eventually she caved to the pressure. No, she isn't as bad as I am with the addiction but she has no problems playing the games and feeding her need on this once in a while as well.

Add in there are games that are still in shrink, some with shrink removed but never punched, others that were played once, and each and every one of those games WILL GET TO THE TABLE! RIGHT? RIGHT?

Sometimes you have to just learn to be okay with it: to embrace that which you once fought. To find the point that you are okay with it and to find a point that your family is as well.

Now I game regularly but try to keep the collection with a certain range (still haven't figured it out yet...I think my wife and I are only a zero off in expectations...she wants 50 and I want 500 so a zero isn't too bad).

My wife and friends outside of gaming have accepted it to some level. I have a regular place to feed my addiction and good people which help me feed my addiction as well. While I sometimes wonder how it got to where it is, all is good and definitely enjoy it.

As my wife said, "If this is the worst anything you do gets, life is pretty good."

Little planes....they are so so pretty.

The first taste is almost free. Then of course you will begin to see that you neeeeeed lots more of them. And of course a playing mat so they have something beautiful to fly over. And maybe a bigger table to put the mat on.
