So I have about 300 wargames and I didn't even rate 30% of them in these pages.
But recently there seems to be a perfect blend of wargaming elements and Eurogames.
Games we WILL play and NOT put in a closet to look at the boxes.
Original design mechanics coupled with historical simulations could be cool.
What are the main ingredients:
- historical feel
- SHORT playing times < 3 hours
- a LOT of interaction
- tense and fun
- sudden endings possible
- makes you read about the historical subject
- games that can be teached in an hour
- quick set up times
- tactical or strategic military feeling
- AND ... non wargamers could like it

OK I only gave the first 3 titles, you can add the rest.
But keep in mind, all above elements should be present.

Age of Napoleon has it all.
The only negative point are the rules included in the box, but download the living rules on this site and you can game a REAL wargame playable in 3 hours

The brand new First World War also has all the elements mentioned above.
Incredible playing time of UNDER two hours and a LOT of historical feel.

This one meets your requirements and was one of the first wargames that really crossed over to the euro game area.

Wallenstein seems to fit the bill perfectly. A nice blend of Euro and wargame, and the rules are easily taught (can explain everything in about 15 minutes). Also, it plays in 3 hours or less; in fact, people have often complained that the game is too short (as the 2-3 hours you're playing seems to fly by, plus you're kind of limited as to what you can do in those two years). Broad appeal.

I don't know about sudden endings possible, but lots of things can happen suddenly, and the ending is usually a pretty brutal turn. People might want to read about the Venetian Empire to see how they achieved what they did after playing this game. And it not only gives a strategic feeling, it gives a kind of historical feeling, that is - both the military and economic aspects of the period. All while remaining very much (very much) a Euro game.

This was the one that convinced me Euro games could be worth playing. Until this I was sort of an old school wargame elitist I suppose. So some of these games may work the other way than you suggest: making Euro gamers out of wargamers.

This is our contribution to the genre (I'm the co-developer). Will reach stores in Sweden in December, and abroad probably Jan/Feb. The goal when developing this was precisely to make a euro-wargame. It's played in 2-3 hours, teached in 15 min, and set up in 15 min.

Of course you can't account for all factors in WWII in a relatively simple game, so the game mechanics are focused on the use of combined arms in battle, the production and movement of units. Combat is highly interactive, although a bit tactical in nature compared to the strategic nature of the rest of the game.

However, the few rules produce surprisingly realistic strategies and outcomes, and you can really test many what-if scenarios. I hope the gamer community will like when it's out.
