I was reading this excellent Geeklist just now and it inspired me to look around my shelves for great properties that have been overlooked by the boardgame market at large. Feel free to make suggestions!

American Gods

by Neil Gaiman

This book is a masterpiece of fantasy that explores the question of what Old Gods do when no-one believes in them anymore. It would be easy to put almost all of Gaiman's work on this list as he is a creative genius, but this book shines above the rest.

The protagonist encounters not only ancient Gods from Egypt, Scandanavia and the like, but the modern gods of America (the internet, money and the like personified). A great battle between the factions of gods forms much of the novel's climax.

Surely this is crying out to be a board game!

Kingdom Come

by Alex Ross

Kingdom Come is a homage to the heroes of the DC comics universe, exploring their possible future in a world not altogether dissimilar from our own. Superman has retired from public life as popular sentiment swung against his brand of traditional justice. He is convinced to return to the world in order to inspire a new generation of heroes and renew humanity's faith in non-lethal justice. There are, however, many elements working against Superman and his allies and in a nuclear cataclysm, many of the heroes are wiped out. The survivors, led by Superman, work to build their world anew.

DC comics game licenses tend to be less than stellar so far, but throw something like this to Fantasy Flight and I bet you'd have a winner!

Oliver Twist

by Charles Dickens

Oliver Twist, though charmingly adapted into various other incarnations, is in truth quite a harrowing tale of orphanage and an examination of the cruelty and poverty that were rife in Dickens' time. Though Oliver and his role model, the artful Dodger, do become heroes of a sort in the end, their journey is full of twists and turns and nigh-betrayals - the stuff of any solid eurogame!

Monkey

by Wu Ch'eng En

I won't tell you to ignore the TV series of the same name, but the original Chinese folk tale has a great deal more to it, including some scathing mockery of the level of beauracracy present in ancient China.

Monkey tells the tale of the great Monkey King, how he gained his powers, how the Buddha punished his arrogance and how he redeemed himself in a journey to the west while protecting the young priest Tripitaka from harm. Any story with a built in journey mechanic and four main characters is surely perfect for a boardgame...

Master and Margerita

by Bulgakov

I recently read this classic again. An engaging story itself, full of humorous and great characters. The story takes place in two differnt places and two different time periods. The novel is a satire on one level - the boardgame could pick on this level and could incorporate the humorous and the three main characters (Master, Margerita and Woland), into an engaging eurogame. At the centre of the novel there is a ball at midnight , this could be the starting point in the game....

I'm a big fan of deduction and Ancient Rome is both a hobby and a profession for me. So I'm biased towards seeing Steven Saylor's Roma Sub Rosa series turned into a series of deductive games (maybe in the vein of Mr. Jack??).

But no host your own mysteries!

Yes there are several games of counter-factual wars between the USA and CSA after the South won in the 1860's, but none based specifically on Harry Turtledove's Timeline-191 series that began with How Few Remain.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline-191

Some interesting strategic games, maybe card driven games, would work for the 2nd War Between the States and the American theaters of WW1 & WW2,

The Art of War in the Western World
by Archer Jones

This book covers warfare from just the perspective that interests me most, and the coverage ranges from ancient times to the present day, showing what's changed and what has remained the same.

A wargame that covered all that this book covers would be magnificent!

A Walk in the Sun, Harry Brown's story of an infantry platoon who landed at Salerno away from the main force. and went about 6 miles inland to take a farmhouse. Just a matter-of-fact day-in-the-life kind of story.

IMO, the best war novel written. This exchange catches the mood of it nicely:

"You think you'll live long enough to make Sergeant?"

"Baby, I just want to live long enough to make civilian."

Ringworld

Larry Niven

The Ringworld has quite a few subspecies and lots of territory to live on. There's conflict, tech variances, and area control. A 1:1000000000 scale map would put Civilization to shame.

The Night Watch

by Sergei Lukyaneko

The Night Watch movies were good, but the Night Watch books are phenomenal. Lukyaneko creates an immersive world where balance is key to existence and is constantly in peril. Worse still, a loss of balance benefits good or evil and there are people on both sides willing to make compromises on their principles in order to win.

While the books make comment on post-soviet Russia, they contain an amazing amount of source material for a board game or RPG along the lines of Arkham Horror or Android.
