With the myriad sources of game news coming out of hundreds of publishers, large and small, it's difficult for even the informed gamer to know which releases to look forward to. This list is an attempt to aggregate what the BGG community as a whole is anticipating, omitting my own personal biases as much as I can.

Basically, this is a list of new releases sorted by the number of wishlists they are on. I'm using BoardGameNews's excellent Gone Cardboard page as my master list of releases. Of course, BGN only highlights North American releases, so I'll do the same. I'm going to omit reprints of old games, except in the case where they're different enough to warrant new BGG game entries.

I will post an updated version of this list about every two months. Here are previous lists:
Sep/Oct 2009
Jul/Aug 2009
May/Jun 2009
Mar/Apr 2009
Jan/Feb 2009
Nov/Dec 2008

There is also a subscription thread for this Geeklist series. If you wish to receive a notification when I post future versions of this list, go over to http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/415697/the-buzzlist-anti... and subscribe.

Dungeon Lords
Design: Vlaada Chvátil (Through the Ages, Galaxy Trucker)
Publisher: Z-Man Games
Specs: 2-4 players, 90 minutes, Age 12+
Release: December 2009

[Previous List: #1; 959 Wishlists]

Chvátil's latest game turns the concept of dungeon-crawling on its head. Players take the role of dungeon lords, and are tasked with creating dungeons filled with treasure, traps, and monstrous defenders. Players secretly choose a three actions to build up their dungeons and hire minions, and depending on how many other people have chosen that action, the strength of that action will vary. At the end of each of the game's two years, players will fight off a group of adventurers. The player to have the most impressive dungeon after fighting off these two sets of adventurers wins the game.

Carson City
Design: Xavier Georges (Royal Palace)
Publisher: FRED Distribution
Specs: 2-5 players, 90 minutes, Age 12+
Release: December 2009

[Previous List: #13; 295 Wishlists]

This game features a Caylus-style action track; players place their Cowboy pieces on one of these actions or somewhere on the Carson City grid, and the associated actions will be executed in order. However, another player may also place his Cowboy on an occupied space, resulting in a duel that's resolved partly with gun chits that you accumulate and partly via simultaneous action selection. Players build buildings on the Carson City grid that pay money that can either be converted to points or saved up for use in future turns, but opponents can occupy your buildings for a share of the profits.

Runewars
Design: Corey Konieczka (Battlestar Galactica, StarCraft: The Board Game)
Publisher: Fantasy Flight Games
Specs: 2-4 players, 180 minutes, Age 12+
Release: Q1 2010

[Previous List: N/A]

Runewars is a new Fantasy Flight megabox game that is based on the old FFG game, Battlemist. In the Fantasy Flight tradition, the game will contain nearly 200 plastic miniatures, as well as over 200 tokens and over 200 cards. This is a military conquest game in which you control heroes as well as armies. Heroes do not participate in army combat, but they can quest for artifacts, duel other heroes, and otherwise explore this fantasy world. The goal of the game is not the obliteration of opponents, but instead the collection of Dragon Rune tokens, which are scattered throughout the world.

Design: Vladimír Suchý (League of Six)
Publisher: Rio Grande Games
Specs: 2-4 players, 120 minutes, Age 11+
Release: December 2009

[Previous List: N/A]

In this Essen release, players take on the role of shipyard managers, tasked with building a fleet of ships. Players receive secret goal tiles at the start of the game, guiding them in what kind of ships should be built. Turns consist of moving your token around a rondel-like track that restricts you from taking any action that you or another player has just taken. These actions allow you to either draft ship parts, maps, or special abilities, or move a token on one of several other rondels to get equipment and crew. Ships are scored based on their speed, contents, and if they match the goal tiles.

Design: Heinz-Georg Thiemann
Publisher: Fantasy Flight Games
Specs: 2-5 players, 120 minutes, Age 12+
Release: Q4 2009

[Previous List: #6; 507 Wishlists]

This game was actually released in Europe at Essen 2008, but is just getting to North America now, courtesy of Fantasy Flight. Planet Steam is a economic supply-and-demand game with a fantasy/steampunk theme. In each turn, you auction off role cards that give you special abilities, a little like Age of Steam. Players then claim territory and build factories on a grid to produce one of four resources, and having the same type of factories in close proximity produce even more. At that point, players can buy and sell resources in the market--but the price of resources will go up or down with being bought or sold.

Publisher: Alderac Entertainment Group
Specs: 2-5 players, 60 minutes, Age 12+
Release: 2009

[Previous List: Just Missed; 236 Wishlists]

Thunderstone is one of a handful of games that mark AEG's recent foray into the world of board games. The game is reminiscent of the highly-popular card game Dominion, in that the primary mechanic is deckbuilding. The theme of this game, however, is a dungeon-crawl, and players must decide whether it is best to spend their time buying village cards to strengthen their adventuring party, or venture into the dungeon to fight monsters and gain victory points. When adventuring in the dungeon, players can choose either to fight the tamer monsters near the entrance, or the more impressive monsters deeper in, but only if they have enough light sources to light the way.

Macao
Design: Stefan Feld (Notre Dame, In the Year of the Dragon)
Publisher: Rio Grande Games
Specs: 2-4 players, 90 minutes, Age 12+
Release: Q2 2010

[Previous List: N/A]

Macao is #13 in Alea's bix-box series, and like the previous three games in the series, was designed by Stefan Feld. In this game, players roll colored dice to populate a heptagon with resource cubes. The players can then obtain those cubes and use them to play building cards, change the turn order, buy commodity tiles, or move ships (aligning ships and commodity tiles is worth points). However, cubes cannot be saved from turn to turn, and unplayed building cards are worth a penalty at the end, making it important to be as efficient as possible.

Valdora was a Nuremburg (Spring) release in Europe, but is finally coming to the US. In this game, players move around the board picking up gemstones. Gemstones can either be used to increase your ability to pick up more gemstones, or complete contracts ultimately worth points. While increasing your abilities will allow you to get gemstones more quickly, the gemstones run out quickly, limiting the value of getting too many of these. Players are encouraged to both specialize in particular types of gems as well as complete all of the different types of contracts, as both are worth bonus points.

Opera
Design: Hans von Tol (Skyline of the World,
De Ontembare Stad)
Publisher: FRED Distribution
Specs: 2-4 players, 120 minutes, Age 12+
Release: December 2009

[Previous List: N/A]

In Opera, players compete to put on Operas in various cities in Europe to earn money and victory points. At the beginning of each turn, players must set a budget for that turn--a higher budget will allow you to choose more roles and have a better turn order, but will leave you with less money to buy music, opera houses, etc. The first player then selects one of Puerto Rico-style roles, costing him budget, and anyone that also wants to use that role will pay a lesser amount of budget. At that point, the player with the most remaining budget (which could be the same player) selects another role. Roles allow you to acquire operas, opera houses, influence the popularity of music, etc. Players earn more money for putting on big shows, and more points for putting on lots of shows.

Despite apparently having been in the pipeline since 1999, little is known about this game. Players will take the roles of heads of state and engage in global politics in a near-future setting. It remains anyone's guess as to if and when this game will actually be released.
