After the success of the original list here, my plan was to do a new one every month. But when December 1st rolled around, it was only a couple weeks since the first list had quieted down, so it seemed a bit too soon. However, with holiday season upon us, it seems only fair to the small publishers and designers to get their games some visibility while folks are in a shopping mood. So here we go again, with a new and improved title! (I hope.) If you feel strongly that the list should continue on a strictly monthly basis, please comment or PM me. Otherwise, I'll probably space them out a bit more.

This list aims to be a place where the whole BGG wargaming community can go to find out what's happening beyond the "Big 2" - GMT and MMP. Designers, publishers, and players are all invited to talk about new, non-GMT/MMP games that they're excited about. In order to keep this list useful to everyone involved, please follow the following guidelines...

* Do *

1) Stick to games that either were released in the last two months, or that could reasonably see release in the next year with sufficient fan support. The further away the game is, the fewer people will be interested in it, and thus the fewer people that will follow this list.

2) Provide enough information and commentary to make your entry interesting. A single paragraph of ad copy isn't very interesting. What sets this game apart? What is the designer excited about? Is there any new art? What new research has been done? What progress has been made since the last update? And so on...

3) Comment on this list. Voice your support of upcoming titles. Ask questions of designers. Respond to questions from gamers. A list with no activity drops off the front page almost instantly, and then it's not useful as a gathering place.

* Don't *

1) Add more than a few items per person. Pick and choose your favorites and let everyone contribute.

2) Post a novel. This isn't the place for an entire session report, pages of design notes, or a whole gallery of photographs. Post those in a separate thread and use this list to provide an entry point. If there's too much information, people won't read it. Keep it short and sweet.

I've been considering this one since John Buse mentioned it in the first list. The game, originally published in 1979 and designed by John Hill (of Squad Leader fame) is a division-level sim of the Chinese Counteroffensive in the Korean War. Besides being a well-regarded game on a less-travelled topic that plays in an evening, the new edition will also includes both the original and revised maps, rules, and counters - a nice touch in a reprint of an older game. Counter and map art are available at Compass's product page: http://compassgames.com/show/product/yalu. As an added bonus, Compass is having a nice sale at the moment - preorder Yalu (for $45) and get any in-stock game for a healthy 40% off. Sounds to me like a good excuse to finally pick up Silent War...

This intriguing little light wargame also came to my attention in the first list. A 30 minute wargame that fits in your pocket would certainly be handy... if it has even a little bit of depth to it. It seems to have hit the street since then. Anyone give this a run yet?

World at War is a fun, fast-playing platoon level game of tactical combat between NATO and Soviet forces during a hypothetical invasion of West Germany in 1985. The system covers a wide variety of weapons systems with a fairly small rules set that is easy to learn.

The World at War Compendium is a set of scenarios and articles that appeared in the first seven issues of Lock 'n' Load's house magazine. It also comes with the maps and 88 counters. They started charging pre-orders in the past few weeks, so it should be available soon.

Nations at War is the planned WWII version of the very successful World at War System (World at War: Blood and Bridges, World at War: Eisenbach Gap). Nations at War will feature action on the Western Front, with scenarios ranging from Normandy to the crossing of the Rhine.

The WWIII system plays as fast as the old PanzerBlitz/PanzerLeader games with about the same level of complexity. I think the WWII version would sell like hotcakes and I don't know why Lock 'n' Load isn't marketing this more aggressively. (Anyone familiar with LnL is aware that they aren't shy about marketing their products!)

This one is still on pre-order but could be printed in early 2010.

There's wargaming in the ancient world and then there's God Kings. God Kings is a card driven game covering conflicts in Egypt and the near east in 15th to the 13th century BC. The game has a lot of the great Pharaohs from the era such as Ramesses II and Thutmosis III against the other powers of the era.

This sounds really unique to me. Not a lot of wargames cover this era and definitely not a card driven one. It's a brand new designer by the name of
Julien Bonnard, however the developer is veteran Neil Randall. The art also is by Timothy Schleif who did the great artwork for The Price of Freedom: The American Civil War 1861-1865.

This one intrigues me. I've played 2 Compass Games so far. The Price of Freedom: The American Civil War 1861-1865 and Spartacus. Price of Freedom didn't work for me at all as a historical simulation although the art was stunning. Spartacus however was a pretty decent game. Not a great game but enjoyable and again great artwork. I just have this feeling that Compass is on the verge of busting out with something really great soon. This one really screams potential in my book.

A slight deviation this - it's not the boardgame (well rule set) that is just out but a computer implementation of it, and a pretty faithful one from what I can gather.

http://www.slitherine.com/games/fog_pc

I like the idea of miniatures games but don't like the fiddling around with measuring movt etc and I know I would never get round to painting the figs. So the PC version is intriging - has anyone played it. How would it measure up to Rome Total War? There is one thread on the games forum here but not that much info.

The next round of playtesting for the expanded "2nd Edition" starts in less than two weeks.

This game covers the entire American Civil War and takes an hour to play,

It uses a simplified card driven system with each player getting just one card every turn. A card shows which player has the initiative, provides the historical event for that turn, and determines the number of command points available to the player.

Campaigns occur within "contested" areas and the system uses a simple differential table (+1, +2, etc.) to resolve battles. Results affect public opinion with both players attempting to drive down the will of the enemy population to continue the struggle.

Rules include leadership, cavalry raids, naval expedititons, conscription, the Emancipation Proclamation, railroad movement, blockade runners, political crisis events, propaganda, and almost everything else you might expect to see in a game about the ACW.

A limited number of free playtest kits are still available.

A PnP beauty. This game represents an attack by a small group of US soldiers on a small section of beach. Can be played solitare or two player cooperative. I like the way it represents the need to spend time gathering your resources versus the need to get moving and hopefully reduce some of your losses.

I'm just waiting on the proof to put this one up for grabs. While you will need a Memoir '44 set to play, it adds a whole new game to your table for under $10 (in fact, it should be closer to $5)!

Starting with the Gas Attack, players take turns in trying to force the surrender of their opponent in a series of offensives and counter-offensives.

A straight forward treatment of an otherwise tricky wargame situation makes this game accessible to everyone yet is in keeping with traditional wargaming.

I had fun making this and look forward to my next project!

Spearpoint 1943 is a fast-playing WWII card-based combat game that uses tactical squad-level Unit Cards and Command Cards to simulate combat along the tip of the spear, or Spearpoint, of the battle. Each 30 minute game is one intense and unique frontline combat engagement that features engaging cardplay, lots of tension, and hard-hitting strategy for two players.

Only available as a high quality production version, it is now available for preorder. Included in the game are 150 175 cards, 4 dice, and an easy to learn 2-sided rules sheet.

I am almost finished with final Unit Card artwork for all Units in the game (the main components) as announced in the wargaming forum the other day: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/473014/spearpoint-1943-f...

I definitely need those preorders to keep coming in and greatly appreciate your support of the game! Thanks to more than a few BGG'ers we are well on our way to production in the near future! I expect to send it to production in early 2010.

I received the first batch of distributor orders the other day, which is great news for me! The response is good so far and it means many of you are preordering through local game stores across the US, which I support and encourage.

Issue 14 of our newsletter will feature a full run down of the game- how it plays, how it looks with final art, and how it does some very unique things for a card game. One of these is scenarios- yep- scenarios for a card game. I'll also supplement this issue with a video of a game in progress so you can see and hear how the game works and how much tension is built as you play. All back issues are available online on our website (http://www.frontlinegeneral.com) under News --> Archives.

Retail Price: $29.95
Preorder Price (Direct): $24 + shipping
External Info Page: http://frontlinegeneral.com/html/spearpoint_1943.html
Design Notes GL: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/48116

Keep an eye on this title as I'll be releasing final art soon! Thanks again for your support of this game!

Just released. Second game of the 'Germany 20' sub-series in VPG's "Napoleonic 20" set. Excellent introductory level game -- very easy to learn and fast playing (I've taken complete wargaming n00bs, taught them the rules and played a full game in less than 90 minutes; experienced players can easily zip through one of these in 30-45 minutes). Lots of depth and replayability.

Game covers the August 1813 meeting engagement (accidental blundering into one another would be more accurate) between the French 'Army of the Bober' under MacDonald against the Allied 'Army of Silesia' under Blucher. Game features unpredictable weather and the potential for flooding rivers (which historically cut off the retreat path of the routing French army), unreliable French client state allies, and a tense off-map interaction between detached formations that can be recalled to intervene in the battle.

Super beer&pretzels style wargame!

While technically this game has already been brought out, the first printing sold through very quickly. This left people like me who are slow to pick up on new games in the cold.

Luckily they are taking orders for a second printing for what looks like an early 2010 release!

I am excited about getting a copy and giving it a go because I have almost 0 war gaming friends and a solo wargame will be perfect! After reading about the game here on BGG I think it looks quite interesting and I am looking forward to seeing it re-released!

Released a few months ago (may have been slightly earlier in the US) as an historical sub-set of the Fantasy Warfare version while retaining its currency within the system rules. I don't have it or plan to buy it but I do have several Fantasy factions and this is a great game. The best part of the Historical factions is that they can be played against the fantasy factions without issue. Great game, great price, worth a look...

It's halfway through in the Pre-order list.

Why would I like to see this game?

There are not enough games on the Indochina war as it is, and I have a very special interest on the subject, besides, this game portraits the most interesting area of the war without getting engulfed on neither the whole war, or the entire Indochina.

Note that this game was previously issued in Vae Victis, but from what I read of the Kim's posts in Consim this will feature a new map, and he is working through further enhancements.
