I've started a bi-weekly game night with a group of friends of mine - and a good time is definitely had by all. My problem it seems is that when I invite everybody I either get a famine (2 people show up, maybe 3) or a feast ( 7 or 8 people show up). Someday if I get more than 10, we'll split into two groups, but for now, I'd like more ideas for games for 7-9 players that are more fun than party games and have some strategy if possible. I put a few items on the list that we already play. Please give me some more ideas! What I'm looking for are A) good for at least 4 players up to 7 8 or 9 and B) not too long as I've got enough really long games and C) something without a lot of downtime (we could play 8 player monopoly, but I'd rather not) and the more player interaction, the better. Also, I'm not looking for "lifestyle choice" games a la Advanced Squad Leader or Starfleet Battles or many CCG's or RPG's. I appreciate your help!

Advanced Civilization truly becomes a tremendously fun gaming event for everyone involved. We last played New Years Eve, and still after 7 hours (we got a late start) we weren't even half way done. Until I get a more regular group committed to coming, I'm not leaving the game set up for a week and not allowing me to use my table!

The world's greatest party game! More of a party, in my opinion, than a game! This is probably the first thing we pull out on a game night with 7-9 players. This is one game that brings everyone back for more! I need to get the expansions.

I have Diplomacy and Machiavelli, and I haven't taught either to our group yet for two reasons: A) they both take a long time (everyone would prefer to play Advanced Civilization if we're playing a long game) and B) I haven't read all the rules and punched out Machiavelli yet, and after playing in my first Diplomacy tournament and my 3rd and 4th Dip game in my life, I don't like how truly manipulative and mean you have to be to win (yeah I'm a wimp and I don't like poker either!). However, I do want to try Rette Sich Werr Kann (but that only has 6 players too!)

Scattergories is okay - typical party game. I'm glad I picked up a really nice copy at a garage sale for $2.00 last summer. However, I really don't like this game as much as many of my friends. And that timer is the worst! I almost prefer Boggle, but then reading everything off in this size of group tends to take a long time.

I prefer Taboo to scattergories - especially since my buzzer is broken in my Taboo game! I definitely think women are inherently better at this game, so the guys don't like it as much. 8 players is almost too many, and 7 or 9 doesn't work very well.

And rounding off my list is Trivial Persuit. Back in 1984 when this first came out, I would have rated it a 10. There are so many other games I'd rather play nowadays, and prefer this one as a two player game anyways. So you can see - my list is pretty short and I need some new ideas!

Thepollgame is a light and fun partygame. It's a great filler that moves quickly. This game never fails to elicit some new fact about one of my friends that we didn't previously know, and that we'll talk about for weeks(sometimes months) afterwards. The last game it was, "What do you mean, you don't know ANY of your neighbors?!?!?!?!?!"

This game scales between 2 and (according to the box) 7. I've played with 2,3,4 and 6. Granted, the 2 and 3 player games are fairly different than with 4 or more, but either way it is great fun (although I feel the 3 player game is the weakest). The game can slows if people try and think to hard about what jobs to pick and may not appeal to those that are sensitive about being picked on when leading ( if they are still mad about that Diplomacy game in '87, skip this one too). Playable in about an hour (after everyone has a grasp of the rules), easy to explain in a reasonable amount of time (especially if you print out one copy of this player aid for every player http://www.boardgamegeek.com/viewfile.php3?fileid=2185 ) and a game for both feast and famine.

I brought this out at our last get-together, which is actually in the same position as yours (went from famine to feast) and it went over very well. It plays extremely fast and can generate a ton of laughs plus some serious tension with the right group. Only if your group doesn't mind word games though.

It's sort of competitive puzzle-solving, or maybe Bingo crossed with Carcassone. Most people I've played this with seem to enjoy it despite (weird for a game for 6+ players) the lack of player interaction.

Quite hard to find, and with 8 everyone will have to share a picture with an opponent, but it's quite challenging finding anything at all that begins with the letter P, let alone things that none of the other players have found. This is a first-rate party game.

Players take turns proposing game rules (they're on cards), then all players vote if the proposed rule takes effect or not.
Weird but very funny game. Up to 10 people, best with high numbers. It's not long, good choice to end a game night with. (Can't find a picture for it - there's some GeekGold up for grabs!)

If you can find Mayfair's Alibi, it scales up pretty well to up to ten. The game is a bit like Clue with cards, but since you're passing cards every turn it's still solvable no matter how many you've got.
