As is the tradition, I will start things off with my recap:

Friday night, I "had" to go to the gaming club to pick up some games I had ordered for gifts, so I offered to take one of my newly introduced to gaming (played MTG alot though) friends along with me, and we brought along a mutual friend who we thought may be interested in checking it out. We got up there after eating supper, and started off with the tour, and discussed things on the library shelf there that interested them. We started off with Snow Tails, one of my favorites! They were a bit hesitant (I know, its a odd choice for gateway game, but i felt confident they could handle it.). It was a really tight race, and a ton of fun. I think they really enjoyed blocking each other. After that, I saw one of the guys who plays dominion was free, and I felt it was THE game I had to get on the table that night. I asked him if he wanted to teach Dominion (I had played once before). As we were discussing how Warhammer: Invasion was, so I offered to teach him that, if he taught Dominion, and my friend wanted to just watch, and learn the game, as he was interested as well. So one game of Warhammer: INvasion, and then it was time for Dominion. The first time we played with randomly selected cards, the second game Darrel selected a setup, and it was alot of fun. We each ended up building totally different decks, and the scores only ended up being a few points apart. TJ won, with his deck that he was drawing and playing almost his entire deck each round, hoarding all his 1 coins, and then buying at least 1 6VP card each turn at the end of the game. I went for an attacking strategy, and Darrel went for a more combo oriented deck. It was a blast! Our other friend had wandered off, intrigued by a Descent game, so TJ and I went and played a game of Warhammer: Invasion while we gave him a little longer playing Descent. Then it was time to head home, as I had to be at work at 7AM, too bad it had been snowing while we were there, so the drive home took two and a half hours.

Saturday I did not get to play anything, as it was entirely spent working, and finishing up my PnP gifts.

Sunday was Christmas with my wife's family. While various people were prepping food (and everyone who was there ahead of us and not prepping food was playing Bohnanza already) Jamie and I decided to play a quick game of Pandemic. I fell asleep during it (two nights of 2-3 hours of sleep knocked me out), and my wife went to take a nap. My boy (6 Years old) came and woke me up after a bit, and he wanted to try playing his Mommy's spot. So I quickly taught him the basics, and we ended up winning. I will be playing it with him again soon, as he picked it up faster than I expected. Next he begged me to quickly learn my newly acquired copy of Poison. So I read it, while he figeted with the cards and cauldrons. We played twice, and he won both of them.
Then it was lunch time, so we feasted, and after cleanup, we did gifts, and split into two groups, as I really wanted to get my auction crazy family to try out High Society (another birthday present I got with my Boards and Bits gift certificates). We played two games of that, while the rest of the family played a game of Bohnanza. Then we played Grinchwolf (The werewolf gift exchange, which was AWESOME). We only had 9 people, which was pretty slim, as the Grinchwolf rules suggest a minimum of 13. But I fidgeted with the roles, and it worked pretty well, I look forward to doing it with a bigger group at some point. After that, everyone pumped from a game of werewolf, so we played 5 more games. Part way through, my sister in law, and her husband and kids left, so we went down to 6 people, which I know is really hard to do, but everyone wanted to try it. We fidgeted with roles, and then I decided to try something I had read about, I set the two Werewolf cards aside, then took the roles we wanted in, added in a couple others, and 4 villagers. Then shuffled it all together, and randomly selected 4 roles to add in with the werewolfs, and dealt out the cards. We all felt that it REALLY balanced out the games, so we played a few like that. I look forward to trying that again. By then, it was quite late, and my wife's parents decided to head to bed. So we proposed a game of Pandemic. We lost, but it ended up being a blast, and her brother and his wife want to play again.

So that was it for me! Not bad at all! Now just need to make it through today, and then I am off work until Jan 4th! Hoping to play A LOT of games, especially drunken Werewolf on New Years!

Ok. During the weekend I played only one game this time and it's not even a game I like too much. AoE is not a bad 6 player game but playing with 4 players there is much too much space. I also hate the randomness in the discoveries where for the same effort one player can get a much better result than another.

Fortunately Friday evening was a good one. I managed to play Stronghold and that alone is enough to make the day good.

On Saturday I played with my two sons Guillotine., and had lots of fun. We have not played it for a while so the gameplay was even more interesting.

Saturday afternoon we taught our younger son to play El Grande. This game is our recent purchase and we are discovering new strategies and ways to play and try to win. My husband won, as most of the time, but I was right behind him!

On Sunday I and my husband played Scrabble. I am not very good at Scrabble, but still love the game and always have fun to play.

For our "Dashers, Dancers, Prancers, and Vixens" Saturday Game night we started with Ticket to Ride and followed by 4 rounds of Gift Trap.

Also enjoyed some Ginger Bread Cookies with Hot Chocolate, Christmas Music, and a little bit of March of the Wooden Soldiers.

We had a blast even though started late and only 3 guests (not including wife and I) made it because where we are in NJ had a foot of snow. We did play til 5am Sunday and the snow added to the atmosphere.

This was a great weekend in games

Saturday:
I got this as a Christmas present, Dominion: Intrigue, and played it twice. Loved it, it really gives the game a new life.
Two silly games: Thing-a-ma-Bots and Pow Wow. Pow wow is funny, Bots is boring.
And two great games: Roads & Boats and Goa. Roads&Boats was completely chaotic, and Goa is definitely an elegant and fun game.

Sunday:
Two Splotter games on a weekend?!
I played Indonesia, my second favourite game.

Well, this was a snowed in weekend. The snow started falling on Friday and the power started going off by 6pm Friday night. Alesia and I have propane fireplaces so we told a couple of our friends that they were welcome to spend the weekend, so they did.

Friday night consisted of one game and one game only, Snow Ball Fight. Yeah, it’s pretty funny thinking of a bunch of 40-50 year olds running around the yard throwing snowballs.

Saturday was for gaming, but no one wanted anything too complicated, so I broke out the games I had set aside for Christmas. My wife does not like complicated games, so I bought the games this year with her in mind. The first one to hit the table was Ingenious. This caused Alesia to say something I have never heard her say before, "Let's play it again." So, we played it twice. She wanted to play it a third time but I said, "Lets try some of the others".

Quirkle was the next one. Very similar to Ingenious in play and we ended up playing it three times, but the first two times we didn't play it correctly. The third game was played by the rules and was the most fun of the three.

I needed a break after this one, but the ladies wanted to continue to play so they broke out Too Many Cooks. Funny thing about that is the last time Alesia played the game she didn’t like it, but she said it as OK this time. Guess she was just more in the mood.

After that game one of our friends got out Acquire (another new game) but deemed the instructions too complicated, so it was set aside for later consideration. I quickly spoke up and said, Railways of the World only has three action fazes and there is a limited number of things you can do. Plus, it is a six player game.

So, while I started punching out the cardboard, everyone started going over the rules. I am not sure we did everything correctly, this being our first try at the game, but every had a lot of fun. As people who didn’t understand the power of the first bid, I won it for $5k. No one wanted to bid until we figured out how the game played. Everyone enjoyed the game so much so that a few wanted to play it again, but considering it was after midnight and the previous night no one went to bed until 4am, we decided not to try another game that night.

Overall, I think everyone was happy with my purchases this year: Ingenious, Quirkle, Railways of the World. Acquire will have to be looked at again. Power Grid didn’t get looked at. Maybe this coming up weekend we will give them a try.

Controlling Monsters rampaging across the U.S. (and Canada and Mexico a little) destroying cities and famous sites!? Check!

Controlling military branches to try to stop or hurt your opponents monsters!? Check!

Researching for military tech advances or looking for mutation sites for your monsters!? Check!

I played this game X2 this weekend. What a fun game with more strategy than meets the eye. If your group is looking for a fun, rampaging, romp n stomp, get your buddy type of game...this would fit the bill.

We played our fastest 2-player game yet. It took less than 2 hours and we just prevented Yig from awakening. Although we probably won by misinterpretting a couple of ambiguous rules in our favor. But I don't care. The world was saved. That is all that matters.

Our go-to game right now is At the Gates of Loyang, multiple plays over the weekend, and last night we changed things up a bit with a couple of games of Formula Dé Mini.

It was my oldest daughter's birthday so we hung out with her and her husband this weekend. My daughter is my bestest gaming buddy for sure. She is always excited to play any game and always looks forward to new games that I bring to the table. Plus she is a very quiet player that wins more than most. She is a gracious winner, just alot of fun to play games with.

I brought a bag full of games as I usually do but we only managed to play two. Revolution! and Cape Horn.

DEEP or DUMB LUCK? or somewhere in between?

Revolution! - Four of us sat down to play this and for me, confusion reigned. I had an excellent start with initial domination of 4 seperate areas. However my noob son-in-law, was either extremely lucky or figured this wacky game out and tromped all of us. He is a very smart guy so I think he saw something I had missed before. At any rate this game is a tough one to get my head around and I still think there is a game here, somewhere. This is a game for some reason, when I win it is very satisfying, but when I lose it is very frustrating. It is the only game that affects me this way. Time will tell.

FULL SAIL FUN!

Cape Horn - I picked this up off ebay for under $4! It was new in shrink! I looked at the reviews on the Geek and did not read anything seriously detrimental, in fact the reviews were quite positive. The mapboard is nice and the components above average. The game plays quick and appears to be well balanced for the number that can play.

Our game was a little slow at first as we learned the game. Naturally my son-in-law and I immediatley began sparring with each other, while my daughter got a quick lead. Once we realized she was gaining a lead we ganged up on her to slow her sailing progress. It was too late, she won handily! Happy Birthday Kiddo!

We like this little game. It has strategy, some nifty mechanics and a decent amount of interaction and screwage to make it a fun gaming experience. Where was this game when it came out? Is it a sleeper? Was it overshadowed by other better marketed games of the time (1999)?

Matters not, I 'm glad I snagged a copy of this one.

A great weekend.

It has been a pretty dry gaming month, but last night was a blast. I had meant to bring Doom for a first place, but I left the instructions at work.

Summoner Wars was a big hit. My favorite moment was when John surrounded Grognack with walls-- daring me to try to get him out. It turned into a funny moment as he attacked his own walls to escape a slow death from my Fire Drake. haha.

His best moment was probably how his Cave Goblins came back from an early thrashing to wipe out the Dwarfs.

We were both disappointed with the board. Even John's non-gaming wife commented on it when she saw it. Oh well.

I also introduced him to Fluxx through Zombie Fluxx. It is still Fluxx, but the theme improved my fun with it. He seemed to like it as well. Maybe I will bring it to x-mas dinner.

Week 2 of my campaign was on Saturday. the party went decidedly off course when I gave them a choice between the prewritten module and the scenario I had kinda cobbled together as an alternative, and in true RPG style Since I would have preferred the nice safe prewritten, so my players declared "We'll go south!" So instead of ivestigating a hunting lodge, they're hip deep in greenskins. ah the fun of PC's decisions!

Not much this past weekend, thanks to me being sick. At least I got it out of the way before the long weekends - and what better time to read rule books?!

Friday: We stayed home so I wouldn't contaminate the whole gaming group. After feeling too lousy to play anything Thursday, we eased back into gaming with some quick, easy things: Race for the Galaxy (+ all expansions, cards only), Kamisado, and Cosmic Cows (mostly because it was easy to reach from my chair).

Saturday: read the rules to Middle Kingdom while RnR drove. The first read through left us with a couple of questions that the second read clarified. We played a game when we got home and a second game later. We looked back at the rules once or twice, but overall we found it easy to learn. We're not sure why there are so many complaints about this rulebook. It's a nice filler at a great price. We also got in a second play of Il Principe which we enjoyed just as much as the first. It isn't recommended for 2 according to BGG voters, but it works for us just fine.

Sunday: We learned Cleopatra and the Society of Architects over breakfast while watching the snow sputter to an end. We each played two colors. Easy to learn, fun to play, and a theme more pervasive than a simoom! We later tackled a second play of Phoenicia. I liked it every bit as much as our first play.

Then, we exchanged a single holiday present. RnR decided to open a stocking stuffer and found Modern Art! No, not a Jackson Pollock painting, but the Knizia game. I picked an odd shaped box that I suspected might be a book. Instead, I found Agricola: Farmers of the Moor!

Amazingly enough, my youngest did not ask me to play Numbers League: Adventures in Addiplication this weekend!

While other people were snowed in and managed some serious game play, I spent the first half of our usual game day out plowing a pitiful amount of snow.

My eldest son and I did get in a game of Mr. Jack ~ our first ~ so there's at least one thing I can add to the list.

Within the first two turns, my son had managed to clear all but two of the suspects ~ Sherlock Holmes and Sergeant Goodley. Throughout the rest of the game, I somehow managed to keep both Holmes and Goodley in the light. I would have preferred for them to have been in the darkness so Jack could make his escape, but I think the only turn Goodley was out of the light was the first. Not once in the whole game did I manage to control Holmes, and the only opportunity I had to do so was on the very last turn, when I had to choose between Holmes and Goodley.

I took Goodley through the sewers and used his summoning to yank Holmes out of the darkness, away from prying eyes. All my hope relied on whether or not the alibi Holmes checked would give away the identity of Jack...

It did not.

With one move left to make an accusation, my son was left with a means ~ via the sewers ~ of tackling either Holmes or Goodley, so it all came down to a 50/50 chance of him guessing right... unless, of course, he had managed to use his deductive reasoning and determine who this Jack guy was pretending to be...

He tackled the famous Sherlock Holmes, who was, I imagine, very put out by the indignity of it all, and was perhaps even more distraught to find that Sergeant Goodley turned up the next day, bound and gagged, and that Mr. Jack had made good his escape at the last possible moment...

Got my wife to try a second game of this. She's very good at economic optimization games (she routinely beats me at Notre Dame and Agricola family version). I played it too close to the bone in terms of money, grabbing the early extra actions, and didn't take advantage of the expedition cards even though I'd advanced there early. In one round she was able to outbid me for every tile. Worse, I ended up letting her have the Espionage tile because I lost track of her ducat count ... (No, I didn't throw the game to her, this was just poor play on my part.)

She definitely "got" the game this time, though there's definitely room for her to smack me down worse than the 40-34 beating I took this weekend. I'm hoping this game continues to interest her as much as ND does.

Got this in a recent Math Trade, and wow, this seems like a real winner. This was a bit of a learning game so I couldn't dig into the strategy, but there's a lot to think about -- whether to expand or take income, where to expand, how to block others, how not to get blocked out, etc.

It plays very quickly with 5, and it has a rep for playing well with 6 as well. Couldn't be happier with this trade right now.

Played the Battle of Zama once (with item). I really dislike that Romans running away score the Romans points. I'll have to change that next time I play. The elephant charge at the beginning was pretty much same as history; I tried to run the Roman cavalry the same way with less than spectacular results; look it up in Wiki if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Set up Spartacus, but I've got some questions; so back in the box it went.

Released all the counters for Blackbeard. Looks straight forward. I'll start playing today!!

(boy this work keyboard is stickly; sorry for any tiyops)

Played an oldie - Ace of Aces. Wanted a quick game while a friend was over, when things made a longer game impracticable.

We played the basic game, which is so simple it was very easy to re-learn. He got the first shot in, but flew away after I got him twice.

A fun little game, I'm surprised it's not been reprinted.

Christmas started for me this weekend as well. My wife, my dad, and my sister played back to back to back Dominion games with the last one taking forever thanks to the Cutpurse and Ghost Ship being prevalent. Then that evening we played some Say Anything, which went over pretty well and followed that up with some No Thanks.

Sunday I got to make what has become a rare appearance at the Indy Boardgamers. When I got there Chris, Todd, and Zoe were finishing up San Marco. We pulled out Small World, which Chris had played once before and really liked. Todd and I got off to an early lead, beat up on each other, and Zoe with her Spirit Gypsies ended up taking the game. We finished up with my 10th all time play of For Sale. Not a bad weekend, probably much better than the upcoming one as far as gaming goes. Now New Years weekend will be some major gaming!

I could not find any willing victims, er, participants so I got in a few games of the Java version of Kingsburg. It took me a while but I figured out a strategy to beat the computer AI 4 out of 5 times.

I taught 3 new players how to play this Sunday during two different games. 2 of them really liked it a lot and are interested in possibly getting it at some point. One 14 year old started mentioning possible combinations of how this card and this card would work well together. He was starting to get it.

The funny thing is I recently sleeved my copy of Dominion and a few players commented that it was poking their hand. I've never really had that happen but I experimented and figured out what they were doing.

I played a game with two veterans the second time and I lost to the one by three points. The other one wasn't close to us.

This certainly is a fun game but I will add it won't be for everyone. It works for a good number of people but I don't think it will have quite the wide appeal that a Ticket to Ride does. That being said, I really love Dominion and plan on playing it for quite a while.

Taught my 6 year old how to play Pandemic and was surprised how quickly he picked up on it. Now he keeps begging to play "Epiodemic" (still working on pronunciation.)

Managed to win 3 out of 4 games, with 4 epidemics. First 5 epidemic deck we played resulted in us dying of yellow fever after the third epidemic...drew 6 out of 8 yellow infection cards to start, then had 2 epidemics back-to-back which generated 6 outbreaks!

Also managed to play a few games of Lost Cities and a game each of Agricola and Race for the Galaxy.
