Inspired by (Ripped off from?) Tom Vasel's Going through the Alphabet: Best Games, I decided to see what my favorite for each letter is. With over a thousand games rated so far, surely there's something above the neutral 5.5 in each letter for me....

You can click on the letter in each geeklist item to see all my ratings for games starting with that letter.

I'm doing this mostly out of my own curiosity, to see what my alphabetic favorites are. So, I hope you'll forgive me, Tom!

10  Agricola I am quite the fan of Uwe Rosenberg's trifecta.

10  At the Gates of Loyang — in fact, I'm stunned to discover that I'm not currently playing a solitaire game of At the Gates of Loyang right now! Loyang gets the solitaire win of the three, because of its quick setup and play times, and for providing a significantly different feel than the game does with 2+ players.

10  Antiquity, inspiration of At the Gates of Loyang is the third absolutely winning A for me. Pollution management in the extreme!

A is a very strong letter for me: There are 24 base games I rate  8  or better!

9  Blue Moon City is an excellent, fast-paced game of chicken, involving much lateral thinking.

9  Black Pawn Trucking is a stellar solitaire game for the Piecepack.

9  Battle of the Beanfield is a very fast, very tense solitaire game for Stonehenge: An Anthology Board Game - or at least for its cards and bars.

B is no slouch either, with 20 titles I rate  8  or better.

8.5  Fairly fast play times, it almost always ends "too soon" with you wanting to do more, and even if you keep the same selection of cards available, you can play it different every game. Really good game, unless you think it's trying to be a Magic replacement, in which case you may hate it.

Honorable mention goes to Dominion: Intrigue ( 9 ), because it functions as both a base game and an expansion, but I think I have come to consider it more of an expansion, even if I do like it a smidgen better than the original.

D has only 6 definite base games I rate  8  or better.

8  Emu Ranchers is a subtle but brilliant remix of Lost Cities, designed for the Decktet.

8  Exxit feels like it's straight out of GIPF Project.

8  El Capitán is a graphically gorgeous tweak of Tycoon, and rather nice! (Arguably, it should be in with the Cs.)

8  Esagek Classic is much more interesting than the Chinese Checkers wannabe you'd expect from its description.

8  Eclipse saw a previous incarnation as "The Ball and Chain Game", but it has a very interesting feel, as you pin down not only your opponent's pieces, but yours, as well.

8  Essentia is, at its heart, a member of the family of chess variants in which the board defines the pieces' movement. Its reconfigurable board puts it in the smaller subset that have greater replay value; however, what elevates this game is the altered victory conditions!

8  Edo has healthy hints of a number of favorite games, such as Medieval Merchant and Maharaja, but plenty of its own flavor and texture.

E is, as you can see, doesn't peak as high, but has a rather solid plateau, with its 7-way tie for first place!

9  Feudalia is a brilliant deckbuilding / worker placement (within your own domain) game.

9  Four. What a piece of abstract elegance. It uses a Chain of constraints, and once a piece is played, it's a "Who played that there? Who cares‽" situation.

Honorable mention to the former F favorites, which are still excellent games:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
8  FNAP is an ingenious duel of wits that involves careful placement of your pieces in order to form patterns while inhibiting the formation of patterns for your opponent. ...except that each player blindly bids one of their pieces, and the player who selected the "weaker" piece gets to place both!

8  Factory Fun is a hoot every time it hits the table - and it tends to get more than one run each time it comes out. Factory Fun is the game that inspired Galaxy Trucker, and one day I shall play GT.

8  Felithian Finance Somebody publish this game!! It is so good! Tom Wham's delightful art somehow does not clash with this financial game that feels like it could be a cousin of Acquire.

That's it for my  8 + titles for F, unless you unbrand Power Grid: Factory Manager.

F has been dominated by a couple of more recent titles! Now there are 10 titles grade  8  or better.

8  In the Year of the Dragon is disaster management at its most disastrous. As in Stefan Feld's prior disaster management game, Notre Dame (You'll be seeing more of it later), you can learn to surf on the deadly "waves" in the game; however, unlike Notre Dame, you are struggling much more directly against the other players and their choices, which can make this game a little overwhelming at times. Still brilliant.

8  Inklings is another gameshow-like party game that delivers a surprising amount of fun. Party games don't usually lure me in (unless that's all there is), but there's something excruciating and fun about trying to minimize the length of your clues just to the brink of obscurity in order to maximize your score. One character too few, though, and your teammates will be killing you for your incomprehensible "cleverness" keeping the team from scoring.

8  Ido It's been a while since I've played this, and I have a feeling that an updated rating will dip it to at most a  7 ; however, the ingenuity of the shiftable frame altering the playfield in order to allow you to move your pieces is undeniable! One of the most beautiful games you can buy - and one of very, very few with that Mondrian charm.

8  IRONDIE makes effective use of the color wheel, as well as very configurable strategy, all with gorgeous metal dice.

8  Isaac is an innovative, challenging game, whose score track and playfield interact with one another.

8  Il Vecchio looks trite, but it's actually quite an unusual, intense, fast-paced game!

These three six are obviously the only  8 + titles I have for I, and one of those may be in question....

9  Ora et Labora I dig it. Timing your supplies for the settlement phase is a nice challenge. Nobody's fighting you for that settlement you want to build, because everyone has the same ones available; however, that means everyone's potentially scrabbling for the same resources and actions to make them happen. Very cool.

Honorable mention to the greats that were the prior top games for O:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
8  On the Run! is the third game for the Feurio! system. I am elated to see that Mayfair is publishing this three-game set at a mere $20 price point.

8  On the Underground If played with bossy people, the downtime will be excruciating, and with your decisions soaked by other people's advice, the fun will be nil. If you play it with people who can shut up and think about their own turns, then this is a really cool game.

8  Origins is a trivia game about the etymologies of words and the etiologies of sayings. It has some of the usual cruddy trappings of trivia games' weak game mechanisms, but it rises above a few of them. The subject matter is so right up my alley that it biases me enough to like it quite a bit. ...and unlike most trivia games, its trivia doesn't become impossibly irrelevant after a few years.

O has just the three four  8 + games.

9  Tinners' Trail got me to run out and subscribe to Martin Wallace's Treefrog Line. Like Chinatown, it strikes this satisfying blow on the overlap between family games and heavier games. Disaster management takes on the form of... water!

9  Trump, Tricks, Game! is one of the most challenging trick-taking games to play (Was sticht? is the other): In the first three hands, the tricks you take form your hand for the next round. ...and you know what trump will be, which is never the same as it is now. ...and you're trying to score points in the form of footprints on the mid-range cards. Usually the winner erupts from the final round of play, but building the right hand for the final round, without losing too much ground in the meantime, can be a wickedly difficult task.

9  Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization. The fact that a five-hour card game can enthrall me is a miracle in itself. It's the computer Civilization, implemented without a map — a stroke of genius — yet still with military.

T has 22  8 + titles, although arguably several of the The titles belong elsewhere. Tough.

8  Ubongo 3-D continues ramping the difficulty of the Ubongo family of games. The perfectly flat, two-story puzzles are a delightful torture.

8  Ubongo Extreme is probably still the most difficult of the series, and for that, in ways, is my favorite.

8  Ubongo: Duel is head-to-head Ubongo (so, the same puzzle for both players), but without the awkward gem-scooping track. Quick and pleasant!

8  Ubongo Trigo forces you to work two separate puzzles with a single set of pieces. Which pieces go in which puzzle‽ Love it.

8  UNITY — hey, U's not all about Ubongo — is an abstract strategy game of destruction and movement. Mostly destruction. Unify all your pieces into one contiguous group… at any cost.

Those are the three five  8 + games for U. Incidentally, Ubongo itself just misses the cut at  7.5 .

After it had languished on my shelves for a few years, I feared that it would have gone to vinegar with all the new, amazing games in the intervening years. Not so! It remains a favorite!

V has 6  8 + games.

9  Wise and Otherwise disappeared of the face of the planet for a while, which was just criminal. This is a family/party game in the spirit of Balderdash, but notably better. Instead of the players trying to sound like a dictionary (which sort of requires that you've actually read a dictionary before), the players merely finish out the last portion of proverbs from many nations. ...and some of them are so shockingly weird that all bets are off. I have actually come across a few I recognized, so I think they actually did their research!

9  What's My Word? Deduce as much as you can in 11 turns, all the while maximizing your score. This is a fantastic word deduction game. Unbelievably intense.

W has only the one game 4 games I rate at least  8  — although there are several ridiculously close at  7.9  (WildLife),  7.8  (Wallenstein (first edition)), and  7.7  (Was sticht?).

8  XATS is a quick, super-tricky, boardless abstract strategy game. The main trickiness is in the way the victory condition works…

Honorable mention to my former favored X title:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
6.8  X-Machina feels like Apples to Apples gulp done right. Yes, the judging player still gets to choose per his whims, but in X-Machina, the players get to market their misguided choices most cleverly.

X has no games just the one game I rate  8  or higher.

7.7  Yspahan You'd never know my love for Ystari Games from this list, because most of the titles fall with a letter that holds something that overshadows them; however, this is a good, fun, quick, satisfying title that always entertains and presents tough choices, due to gambling on how the dice will affect everyone collectively.

No  8  or higher for Y, but Yspahan is followed closely by Ys ( 7.5 ), both of which are close.
