Recently a game friend was telling me the types of games he won't play. Cooperative. Certain types of auctions. Catan games.

At first I was shocked, because how could you rule out a game you might like? I'll play anything. Then I realized there's at least one category I don't play, namely wargames.

So I made a list of words that would be in game titles I probably wouldn't like. Here it is, with some expansion on the idea.

Actually, not play on words, or even war on words. Just words on war.

“Men love war because it allows them to look serious. Because it is the one thing that stops women from laughing at them.”
- John Fowles, The Magus

"Men love war, women don't."
- Anonymous (meaning I don't know who said it, but I've heard it twice recently)

But it turns out I don't hate war games. I avoid wargames and fighting games and direct confrontation.

"Fighting games differ from Wargames in that the combat in Wargames exists as one part of a large-scale military simulation, while in Fighting games the focus is on the particular combat scenarios." - BGG Wiki

But aren't all games war games? Fighting each other, or fighting the odds. Fighting for survival. Do games just reflect the natural will for power, to control, dominate, be superior? Success, efficiency. Strength, outmaneuvering.

Sports and games. They're just a contest.

Life is a contest. (But who said life was fair?)

You're a winner or a loser. A leader or a follower.
[Actually, no. You can get by with very little interaction, just doing what you do. I'm living, solitary proof.]

Or maybe it's just the tension games provide in a controlled, easy way. I took a stress quiz and got a dangerously low score. Maybe games (and maybe wargames) give that umph to life that the modern humdrum doesn't.

Games are. . .
risk
enemy
force
triumph
victory
crisis
glory
fear

"I will stomp, crush, squash, pound, kill, obliterate and hurt you."
- person about to enter a competition aka game

"I won."
- winner

Or are games just about power and rank? Not army rank, but upper echelon, high society, upper class, titles. Superiority.

I am the ruler. You are not. I rule. (I play games with rules.)

Look at the words:
ruler
lord,
king,
throne,
imperial,
empire
control
leader
power
rise and fall

"Give him an inch and he think's he's a ruler."
- Elementary school playground

Maybe it's all just about fake wealth. The need to feel richer.

Acquire.

Easy money, lunch money, monopoly, profit, jewels, treasure. Economics. Play money.

Okay, so it's not really about wargames, or games, or why they're played.

It's about analyzing - is that what games are?

It's about life and how to live it. Why we live it.

Live to shop. Live to fight again. Live and love. Live and learn.

What's it all about?
