Christmas Eve was always a day for excitement in our household when I was just a young 'un...wondering what Santa would bring me that night would keep me up late and wake me up early Christmas morning. As our family grew older, our gift exchange was traditionally held on Christmas Eve and usually involved a Chic-fil-A nugget tray, little smokies, brownies, egg nog, and bunches of other stuff...

Even back then, games were very special to me...I have lots of good memories of playing games like Clue, Risk, Sorry, Life, Spades, Rook, and Billionaire until early Christmas morning. When I woke up this morning, I thought back to those times and reflected on my favorite Christmas present and thought I'd share it here. Feel free to add your own...and it doesn't have to be a game...

Merry Christmas to all!

My favorite Christmas gift wasn't from Santa nor was it from my parents. I was 13 years old, fixin' to be 14, when I received this from my brother...it was 1975 and Davy (my next oldest brother) gave me a package deal: Sports Illustrated College Football (later known as Bowl Bound) along with a paperback copy of The Fellowship of the Ring. The game kept me entertained for more than a dozen years and was one of the reasons it took me 6 years to get my degree. The book introduced me to fantasy fiction and has entertained me (directly & indirectly) for more than 30 years. This was my "Red Ryder B-B Gun" moment...aside from the birth of Jesus, this was the best gift I've ever received...

Growing up in Bears and Packers territory was tough for me as a Lions fan (unfortunately the Lions are largely irrelevant now...). But my friends and I watched football, talked football and player football. Wanted this game soooo bad. Got it for Christmas in '71 or '72. Played the heck out of it.... Learned that the draw play was a great way to stop a blitz (as was a screen as I recall). We eventually had the offensive player turn away when the defense called their play because we got good enough to figure out what play was called by the players hands....

Panama City FL. I can't remember which year it was. But the Nintendo Entertainment System I got that year is the present I consider the best I ever got. We were pretty poor in those days so the only present I got that year was the system. No extra games or anything else. I played Super Mario Brothers to death that month. We headed down to my Grandmothers to spend the rest of the holiday time with her. I was allowed to take my NES with me. When we got there she said I could hook it up to the portable B&W set she had. The set had a super small screen but I didn't care. Every opportunity I had to sneak away I would head to the laundry room where it was set up and play. Last year my wife got me an X-Box 360 and that has come pretty close to taking the top but I will always look back at this one as the best present evar.
