Like every year I stop looking backwards what happened in the year that has just past. I could not imagine myself not looking for the best published game in 2009. And what would be your choice if you were to pick now the best game you played which was made this year?

As for me Stronghold easily wins. I love the tense in the game, the feeling that you really are attacking or defending a stronghold achieved by so many climatic action possibilities. I also think of it a bit as a area control game, which is my by far favourite mechanic.

My second choice would be the Dominion expansions. Before Intrigue came out I was starting to feel bored with Dominion and I hadn't high hopes that Intrigue would change it. But the first expansion was great, it added lots to the game and made it far less obvious what to do. SO when Seaside came out I was prepared to get a great game and I wasn't disappointed

I'm surprised I didn't heard about this one until December. Another great game with some nice new mechanics, which I believe still waits to be discovered by many people to be a really good game. And it would be my third choice.

So far for me, this is the best.

Followed closely by Richard III: The Wars of the Roses, Space Hulk (third edition).

Hands down this game. I was tapped to run it for FFG at GenCon. I knew nothing about the Warhammer universe and wasn't thrilled. But then I got the rules about a week before GenCon, read them, and thought, wow this looks to be a nice tight game. Saw it in action and I was hooked.

I like the area control aspect with each player having a unique theme. Players are rewarded for playing in character and there is a couple differnt ways to win. The interaction between rival gods is great. I can't get enough of this game.

Highly recommended to anyonw looking for a euro-ameritrash hybrid. No need to know the mythos behind it.

The game easily met my high expectations. I bought it before playing the game, based only on how much I loved the rules, and its designer's first game. Carson City is very immersive, highly thematic, and can be a bit of a brain-burner.

Everyone in my gaming group loves it as much as I, even two of my best friends who have placed at the end of the pack in each game, and everyone wants to keep playing it.

I enjoy that the game is so different each time, with the random city center and mountains placement, what buildings are on the track, turn order, and which side of each character that's used. That the board is double-sided, featuring a much more difficult setup on the back, is another bonus.

Oh, and don't believe all the hype about it coming down to gunfights winning the game. The proper use of firepower seems to be to use it as a threat, not actually to pick fights, but to scare people away from picking fights with you.

This is fast becoming one of my favorite block games. After 4 plays it really has wormed its way into my heart.
I have won and lost with both factions now. I believe York to be the easier of the two to play, but Lancaster has a lot of tricks to pull to make them win. We are just starting to see some of those strategies and I hope to play enough to see many more. (Maybe a York invasion concentrated in the west.......)
Others:

Space Hulk (third edition) is just awesome to look at and a blast to play.

Endeavor is my most played new release. I like it a lot, but realize that, ultimately, it will be a very good Euro that will get a few plays a year. I still am enjoying the newness of it right now though.

Filipino Fruit Market- a nice surprise in the one game, Tindahan, a very good trick taking game with area control. A very clever game I do wish to own. The other game that comes with this is not suppose to be as good, but it is 2 games in one box. One of those games is very good!

Ra: The Dice Game is the last of the notables. I love Ra, my most played board game ever! This removes the auction (one odf the best parts), but retain the push your luck and go for sets strategies. I like it enough to play, not sure I will ever own it.

My favorite original game published in 2009, but also my first published game, so I'm sure I'm biased.

However, looking at 2009 releases I've played, Kachina looks like the winner for me. All of my playtesters have gotten their own copies and my local game store sells a lot of copies. Kachina is a tactical tile laying game loosely based on the spirits of the Hopi indian tribe.

Steam has tons of promise, but I only played a demo game at GenCon, so it's hard to say how I will like it long term. But I'm excited to play my copy soon.

Pandemic: On the Brink makes my favorite game even better, but it's an expansion.

Dominion: Seaside is a excellent addition to Dominion, but it's another expansion.

Zombiegeddon is my runner-up original game of 2009. Very fun game play, but its poor graphic design makes the game hard to enjoy.

Tales of the Arabian Nights was decent, but I'm not sure about this one yet.

For me PQ-17 was the game of the year. The way the designer managed to get the different systems for air, surface, and undersea forces to mesh so well with the intelligence/search system was masterful. I want to play this many times in 2010!
