Me and my friends organize often some game evenings, when we like to bring out some games (new and old) to play.
I like to create this Geeklist to ceate some Gaming Menu for this evenings:
Some games fit together very well! ...because of theme, mechanic or by other criterias.
I'd like to ask you if you know of some powerful combinations that make the people want to come back for more.
Conditions:
1. starters: should be small games that can be played by (2-4 players) the fewer the better and should not last longer than 30 minutes that can be played when not all persons are present. They are needed to set the mood.
2. main dishes: should be either one real big, tasty, meaty game, or two smaller meaty games with different mechanism that fit together well
3. dessert: a fun light game, preferable a Beer & Pretzel game wich can be played with many or even only a few people, as people may want to leave. This game might be nastier than the starter games.
4. special bonus: a small game for the ones that stayed until the end when all the rest is gone (can be played by two or at most 3 players)

One of my actual setups in our gaming group:
Starter:
San Juan - it scales well with 2 - 4 players, it is very peaceful and therefor no aliances get formed for the next game to come, that is important as you will see!
duration: 1/2 hour
Main Dish:
Vinci - middleweight direct conflict - it has some Kingmakerproblem therefore it is important that people enter this game relaxed, if one player plays too agressively in this one, he might be picked on early. cool
Duration: 2 hours
Dessert:
WMD - B&P: all the agression that someone might have got can be unloaded again when he can finally drop some Nuclear Warhead on the head of another! Again this scales good with 2 - 5 players and is fairly quick.
Duration: 10 - 20 minutes
Special Bonus: LOTR - Confrontation: This game is once again something more meaty because I think they two are still there because they can't get enough.
Duration: 30 minutes

During our game night, there is usually no starter. We usually wait for everyone to arrive then start the with the main dishes, but we have a double portion of desert and bonuses so, i guess it is basically the same

Main Dish : Game of Throne : A clash of Kings
I just loooooooooooooove this game! Since we are only 2 who actually wins at this game, it makes it even better I could play this all week. The game also do little to influence the alliance/hatred for the future games.

Desert #1 : Family Business
Mobsters shooting Mobsters... This game tend to make hatred and grudges come out a lot! One thing to remember from our games : Al Capone will die from a bullet shot from Dutsh Shlutz (If thats even 50% close to the correct spelling!)

Desert #2 : Democrazy
Fun, very light game who tends to take a weird way as more and more stupid laws are approved This game is usually last to be played.

Bonus #1 : Hex Hex
When we are into it, we take out Hex Hex and just "Hex" each other to be the one to select a weird rule for the next game! We have yet to play this game with alcohol-based rules

Bonus #2 : Emmerlaus
This one is brought out if we have a lot of players around (5+) and its always fun to kill someone, one D4 at the time

Our other main dishes are : Puerto Rico, HellGame , Twilight Imperium (Been a long while since we played ), many others...

Games to play with my nephews(10 - 12 years).
I find it important to play games that won't last too long, as the would loose interest to fast if they see that they won't win!
Starter:
Im Auftrag des Königs, it scales with 2-4 players. Its quite easy and rather quick. And it oozes theme.
duration: 30 minutes
Main Dish: Dungeon and Dragons - Boardgame, a dungeon crawler is always liked by the young boys Another plus is that I would play the Dungeon Master and the boys could play in a team against the adult
duration: 60 minutes
dessert: Wizard, a easy to learn trick-tacking game. It is liked by everybody I have ever shown this
duration: 30 - 60 minutes
special bonus: Zauberschwert und Drachenei
Just in case the boys still like to go for another Quest!
duration: 30 minutes

This is a somewhat special combination of games by the japanese Publisher Yuhodo Inc!
I think with their first three efforts it is quite possible to do a whole game evening. The games even fit together thematically.

Starter:
Saga - It scales well with 3 - 6 players, a game similar to Uno but with some additional rules, twists and multiple victory conditions! I think it is a great starter, because it can be played very lightly!
duration: 10 - 20 minutes

Main Dish:
Masquerade - This game is basically a cardgame with boardgame character. (just read my review )
This should start the brain cells working!
duration: 1 1/2 hour

Dessert:
Fairy Tale - A very accesssible game that is easy to learn yet difficult to master. Can be played multiple times!
Sadly it doesn't scale too well. 4-5 players is a must!
duration: 10 - 20 minutes

This time I don't offer a Bonus, because there aren't any games left by this Publisher!

This is a fantasytouched setting/menu:

Starter:
Kingdoms - it scales well with 2 - 4 players, first something wicked, quick and easy to grasp to set the right tone for the evening, tabletalk gives this game the right amount of tension arrrh
duration: 15 minutes
Main Dish:
Helden & Zaubersprüche - 2 - 5 players (preferrable with 4-5 players) middleweight fullfilling gaming experience that feels somehow like St. Petersburg to me, but it lasts longer and is therefore more fullfilling. It is more interactive than St. Petersburg and has some trading and auctioning element to it.
Duration: 1 1/2 hours
Dessert:
Erben von Hoax - 4 - 8 players - B&P: Now all alliances someone may have formed during the previous games are to be broken, because now it all becomes a merciless fight for the throne. Backstabbing reccomended. This can be played even when late in the hour and everyone drunk! arrrh
Duration: 30 minutes
